In this paper I examine the question of whether ethicists are moral experts. I call people moral experts if their moral judgments are correct with high probability and for the right reasons. I defend three theses, while developing a version of the coherence theory of moral justification based on the differences between moral and nonmoral experience: The answer to the question of whether there are moral experts depends on the answer to the question of how to justify moral judgments. Deductivism (...) and the coherence theory both provide some support for the opinion that moral experts exist in some way. I maintain – within the framework of a certain kind of coherence theory – that moral philosophers are 'semi-experts'. (shrink)

When an individual’s action is only one among a large number of similar actions and does not seem to make any difference to the bad collective outcome, can it nonetheless be condemned by act utilitarianism? This question has currently regained interest with papers, e.g., by Shelly Kagan, Julia Nefsky, and Felix Pinkert. Christopher Morgan-Knapp and Charles Goodman answer the question in the affirmative for miniscule emissions in the context of climate change. They use expected utility analysis as Kagan did in (...) consumer ethics. The assumptions about the impact of emissions vary according to some underlying empirical scenarios, all of which are possible. Individual actions might be relevant in the sense of contributing to a mere linear accumulation of emissions; or they might be relevant by leading to an accumulation in the form of crossing thresholds, be it one or several, Finally, such actions might not be relevant at all. To give an answer that solves the problem and that is based solely on expected utility analysis is impossible. Therefore, the view of Morgan-Knapp and Goodman must be rejected. (shrink)

According to an editor of The Economist, the world produced, in the years since World War II, seven times more goods than throughout all history. This is well appreciated by lay people, but has hardly affected social scientists. They do not have the conceptual apparatus for understanding accelerated material-technical change and its meaning for people's personal lives, for their ways of relating to them-selves and to the outside world. Of course, a great deal of speculation about emerging life forms in (...) industrialised societies exists and social scientists with a futuristic bend have projected their diverse visions upon public debates, ranging from thc Efficient Hedonism of "post-industrialist' society a la Daniel Bell to the “Responsible Convivialism” of 'post-materialist" critics such as Fritz Schumacher. Competing images of the coming "services society" or "self-service society" share a central concern: the ongoing relation between tile spheres of large organisations and personal lifestyles, between salaried work arid private consumption. They also share a eel-tau' implausibility: few people recognize themselves in either projection. And they sham ubiquitous reference to "technology", without accounting for it in real terms. A good diagnostic of what is actually happening seems to me to be Jonathan Gershuny, who sees a drift toward a particular type of self-service economy: a quite radical shift in the mode of provision of social services, as he calls it, based on new kinds of consumer technologies. Industrialization used to be partial, but is becoming total fast. This process obviously has many facets, the one I am interested in here is the intrusion of modern technology into spheres of life which in the past have been relatively little dependent on it. Definition of the problem: In order to discuss the normative aspects of euthanasia one has to clarify what is meant by active and passive euthanasia. Arguments and conclusion: Many theoreticians deny the possibility of distinguishing between the two by purely descriptive means, e.g. on the basis of theories of action or the differences between acting and omitting. On the contrary, such a purely descriptive distinction will be defended in this paper by summarizing and refining the theory of Dieter Birnbacher, which (...) he developed in his book Tun und Unterlassen. Ist die Theorie des „humanen Utilitarismus“ fähig, die Probleme struktureller Rationalität zu vermeiden, auf die J. Nida-Rümelin in seinen Arbeiten hingewiesen hat? Kann der humane Utilitarist zudem persönliche Projekte schützen, z.B. die Priorität familiärer Beziehungen, was Nida-Rümelin ebenfalls bezweifelt? Im Aufsatz findet eine Auseinandersetzung mit der Konsequentialismuskritik Nida-Rümelins und eine Verteidigung des humanen Utilitarismus statt. Dabei wird insbesondere dargelegt, dass Nida-Rümelins Konsequentialismuskritik alle unparteilichen Ethiken betrifft und dass nicht geklärt wird, was an die Stelle solcher Ethiken treten soll. Eine primär (...) auf die Wahrung persönlicher Integrität gerichtete Ethik schafft gerade bezüglich der von Nida-Rümelin gegen den Konsequentialismus ins Feld geführten Kooperationsprobleme größere Schwierigkeiten als sie beseitigt. Eine positive Alternative bleibt Nida-Rümelin schuldig. (shrink)

Der ethische Relativismus hat sich vielfach als überzeugende Theorie erwiesen. Es soll erörtert werden, welche Konsequenzen sich für universalistische Ansprüche der Ethik ergeben, falls man einen Relativismus akzeptiert, der die Objektivität moralischer Aussagen relativ zu einem "moral framework" oder Rahmenkonzept bestimmt . Kann es unter dieser Bedingung noch universelle Kriterien ethischen Entscheidens geben? Der Begriff "universell" kann a) ausdrücken, daß man bestimmte Kriterien aus einem Rahmen heraus auf alle Betroffenen und insofern universell anwendet. Zudem kann der Begriff b) beinhalten, daß (...) man einige Kriterien hat, die für alle Situationen, d.h. also situationsunspezifisch vorschreibbar sind. Die Bedeutungszuweisungen a) und b) muß man verteidigen, wenn man sinnvoll an der Idee der Universalität festhalten will. Universalität im Sinne von a) soll in diesem Aufsatz verteidigt werden. Damit wird gleichzeitig behauptet, daß die zurecht aus der Geltung des Relativismus ableitbare Gleichberechtigung aller Moralkonzepte de facto notwendig außer kraft gesetzt werden muß. (shrink)

Das Buch enthält einen interessanten Versuch einer kriteriologischen Ergänzung des Kritischen Rationalismus unter Verwendung einer neuen Version der evolutionären Erkenntnistheorie. Durch Klärung der Rolle der empirischen Basis in der Methodologie der Realwissenschaften wird eine Verbindung zwischen dieser Methodologie und der Korrespondenztheorie der Wahrheit hergestellt.Hans Albert.

Die deutsche Romantik gilt gemeinhin als Überwindung der abstrakten Ich-Philosophie Fichtes. Dieses weitverbreitete Muster differenzierend beweist die vorliegende Studie, daß das philosophische, naturwissenschaftliche und poetische Werk des Novalis auf genau diejenigen Probleme des Subjektdenkens antwortet, die Fichte zu einer Vertiefung seines eigenen Ansatzes bewegt haben. Kongenial greift Novalis transzendentalen Ansatz seines Lehrers auf und nimmt damit zugleich in einigen Punkten dessen späte Wissenschaftslehre vorweg. Der Romantiker par excellende ist ein Fichteaner.

Ist es moralisch verantwortbar, Menschen mit technischen Eingriffen zu verbessern? Der Aufsatz versucht diese Frage zu beantworten, indem zwei Gefahren für Verbesserungswillige beleuchtet werden: der Verlust der Menschlichkeit und der unerwünschte Wandel der individuellen Persönlichkeit. Sodann wird ein „Liberalismus mit Auffangnetz“ als Lösung des Problems vorgestellt, die eine unterschiedliche Bewertung von reversiblen und irreversiblen Eingriffen vornimmt. Im letzten Schritt wird überprüft, wie weit diese Konzeption auch anwendbar ist, wenn Eltern ihre Kinder verbessern lassen wollen, also ein „informed consent“ nicht vorausgesetzt (...) werden kann. Dabei werden Argumente zurückgewiesen, die Habermas gegen eine Verbesserung von Kindern vorgebracht hat. (shrink)

Soll Wissenschaftstheorie die Realwissenschaften lediglich korrekt beschreiben oder darf sie sie mit Imperativen traktieren und Normen aufstellen? Deskriptive Wissenschaftstheorien, welche die erstgenannte Option vertreten, haben Konjunktur. Muss das Projekt 'normative Wissenschaftstheorie' verabschiedet werden? In diesem Sammelband soll die skizzierte Kontroverse geführt werden. Dabei wird der Versuch unternommen, bisher oft verselbständigt und isoliert verlaufende Diskurse zwischen kritisch-rationalen, analytischen und konstruktivistischen Wissenschaftstheoretikern zusammenzuführen.

Eine patientengerechte Versorgung ist ein hohes Ziel. Unangemessene Behandlung wie Unter- oder Überversorgung zu erkennen und zu vermeiden, stellt Ärztinnen/Ärzte und Pflegende am Krankenbett vor schwierige Entscheidungen. Hier ist die Entwicklung von praxistauglichen Orientierungshilfen angezeigt, die wissenschaftlichen Kriterien genügen und nicht allein auf Konsens beruhen. Die vorliegende Arbeit versucht, zentrale Normen zur Vermeidung von Über- und Unterversorgung zu formulieren und theoretisch zu fundieren. Dafür wird auf Basis einer Interessen-basierten Ethik eine Graduierung der Autonomie vorgenommen, indem zwischen schwacher und starker Autonomie (...) unterschieden wird. (shrink)

Scientific creativity, i.e. the production of new and socially effective empirical knowledge, can itself be subjected to empirical analysis. Research on the determinants of creative work in science suggests that the internal and external world of creative scientists is characterised by a series of tensions or "oppositions of forces" which "normally" cannot be integrated. Conversely, creative work in science can be understood as the provision of new answers to scientific problems where conventional answers are no longer sufficient to reduce incongruities (...) between cognitive, affective and social standards of satisfactory problem solution. In vielen Darstellungen von Leben und Werk des Novalis ist zu lesen, daß sich der romantische Dichter nach dem frühen Tode seiner Braut im März 1797 von der Philosophie Fichtes verabschiedet habe. Der Durchbruch zur romantischen Poesie sei zugleich ein radikaler Bruch mit der Transzendentalphilosophie. Tatsächlich aber belegt die historisch-kritische Ausgabe vielfach die bleibende Bedeutung Fichtes für Novalis. Exemplarisch lässt sich dies an den »Vorarbeiten zu verschiedenen Fragmentsammlungen« von 1798 zeigen. Diese Fragmente, Fragmentskizzen und Abhandlungen zu Themen vor allem der (...) Philosophie und Poesie stammen aus der Zeit, als Novalis an der renommierten Bergakademie in Freiberg studiert. In den »Vorarbeiten« führt er seine in den »Fichte-Studien« von 1795/96 entwikkelte Theorie des Bewußtseins fort, in deren Zentrum die Auseinandersetzung mit dem Ordo inversus, der reflexiven Verkehrung des Bedingungsverhältnisses von Ich und Absolutem, steht. Die im Reader versammelten Beiträge verstehen sich als Versuche zu einer Soziologie des Visuellen. Sie untersuchen am Beispiel des Mediums Stadtfilm, welche Rolle die dorterzeugten Bilder großer Städte bei der Produktion urbanistischer Repräsentanten spielen. Aus diesem Grund werden insbesondere Übergänge analysiert, die Spielfilme einerseits und urbanistische Diskurse andererseits miteinander verknüpfen. Gemeinsamer Ausgangspunkt ist die These, daß es vor allem Bilder sind, die solche Verknüpfungen gewährleisten. Es wird unterstellt, daß es das Medium Film erlaubt, gerade über den Einsatz von Bildern "näher" (...) an soziale Wirklichkeiten heranzukommen, als dies textzentrierter Praxis empirischer Sozialforschung möglich ist. Stadtfilme erzeugen wirkmächtige Bilder, auf die dann unter bestimmten Bedingungen in urbanistischen Kontexten zurückgegriffen wird. Die Autoren präsentieren konzeptionelle Überlegungen und Filminterpretationen zu Moebius (1991, Regie: Matti Geschonneck), Der Himmel über Berlin (1987, Regie: Wim Wenders), In weiter Ferne, so nah! (1993, Regie: Wim Wenders), Der Bauch des Architekten (1987, Regie: Peter Greenaway) und Hass (1995, Regie: Mathieu Kassovitz). Sie bedienen sich dabei sehr unterschiedlicher Verfahren. Gemeinsam sind ihnen allerdings die Anliegen, die größere Nähe der Filme zu sozialen Welten hervorzuheben und die Übergänge zwischen Stadtfilmen und Urbanistik herauszuarbeiten. -/- City and Film. Attempts at a 'Visual Sociology' Summary The contributions collected in this reader present attempts at a Visual sociology'. Based on a study on the medium 'city film' the author s determine which role the images of big cities evoked in such films can play for urbanistic representations. Therefore the analysis is, in particular, focussed on points of transition marking a connection of movies, on the one hand, and urbanistic discourse, on the othe r. The common point of departure is the hypothesis that images, more than anything else, do guarantee such connections. The authors assume that the medium film may lead 'closer' to social realities than the text- centered practices of empirical social research. City films produce powerful images which, under certain cond itions, can be utilized in urbanistic contexts. The authors present conceptual considerations and interpretations of the following films: Moebius (1991, director: Matti Geschonneck); Der Himmel über Berlin (1987, director: Wim Wenders); In weiter Ferne, so nah! (1993, director: Wim Wenders); The Belly of the Architect (1987, director: Peter Greenaway); and quite different methods they aim at the same goals: emphasizing the greater closeness of films to social worlds and bringing out the points of transition between city films and urbanistics. Recognising and responding appropriately to emotions is critical to adaptive psychological functioning. Psychopathic traits (e.g. callous, manipulative, impulsive, antisocial) are related to differences in recognition and response when emotion is conveyed through facial expressions and language. Use of emotional music stimuli represents a promising approach to improve our understanding of the specific emotion processing difficulties underlying psychopathic traits because it decouples recognition of emotion from cues directly conveyed by other people (e.g. facial signals). In Experiment 1, participants listened to clips (...) of emotional music and identified the emotional content (Sample 1, N = 196) or reported on their feelings elicited by the music (Sample 2, N = 197). Participants accurately recognised (t(195) = 32.78, p <.001, d = 4.69) and reported feelings consistent with (t(196) = 7.84, p <.001, d = 1.12) the emotion conveyed in the music. However, psychopathic traits were associated with reduced emotion recognition accuracy (F(1, 191) = 19.39, p <.001) and reduced likelihood of feeling the emotion (F(1, 193) = 35.45, p <.001), particularly for fearful music. In Experiment 2, we replicated findings for broad difficulties with emotion recognition (Sample 3, N = 179) and emotional resonance (Sample 4, N = 199) associated with psychopathic traits. Results offer new insight into emotion recognition and response difficulties that are associated with psychopathic traits. (shrink)

This paper is concerned with two concepts of qualitativeness that apply to intensional entities. I propose an account of pure qualitativeness that largely follows the traditional understanding established by Carnap, and try to shed light on its ontological presuppositions. On this account, an intensional entity is purely qualitative iff it does not ‘involve’ any particular. An alternative notion of qualitativeness—which I propose to refer to as a concept of strict qualitativeness—has recently been introduced by Chad Carmichael. However, Carmichael’s definition presupposes (...) a highly fine-grained conception of properties and relations. To eliminate this presupposition, I tentatively suggest a different definition that rests on a concept of perspicuous denotation. In the penultimate section, both concepts of qualitativeness are put to work in distinguishing between different ‘grades’ of qualitative discriminability. (shrink)

Higher-order logic, with its type-theoretic apparatus known as the simple theory of types (STT), has increasingly come to be employed in theorizing about properties, relations, and states of affairs—or ‘intensional entities’ for short. This paper argues against this employment of STT and offers an alternative: ordinal type theory (OTT). Very roughly, STT and OTT can be regarded as complementary simplifications of the ‘ramified theory of types’ outlined in the Introduction to Principia Mathematica (on a realist reading). While STT, understood as (...) a theory of intensional entities, retains the Fregean division of properties and relations into a multiplicity of categories according to their adicities and ‘input types’ and discards the division of intensional entities into different ‘orders’, OTT takes the opposite approach: it retains the hierarchy of orders (though with some modifications) and discards the categorisation of properties and relations according to their adicities and input types. In contrast to STT, this latter approach avoids intensional counterparts of the Epimenides and related paradoxes. Fundamental intensional entities lie at the base of the proposed hierarchy and are also given a prominent part to play in the individuation of non-fundamental intensional entities. (shrink)

Sollen Menschen ihre "normalen" Eigenschaften verbessern und so die menschliche Natur neu gestalten? Die Forschung sucht etwa nach Präparaten, die das Gedächtnis verbessern, das Leben verlängern und Gefühle verändern können. Tierversuche sind bereits erfolgreich. Führt die Befreiung von allen Grenzen von Körper und Geist in eine Katastrophe oder erwarten uns neue Chancen? Das Buch soll die Perfektionierung des Menschen leicht verständlich und philosophisch anspruchsvoll hinterfragen. Dabei werden soziale Folgen von "Enhancement" ebenso thematisiert wie die Gefahren für das Individuum. Droht uns (...) eine Zwei-Klassen-Gesellschaft ungeahnten Ausmaßes oder kann Enhancement gerade dazu dienen, Ungleichheiten der natürlichen Lotterie auszugleichen? Können autonome Individuen durch die Wahl von Verbesserungen ihre Interessen realisieren oder muss man sie paternalistisch schützen? Neben diesen Fragen widmet sich das Buch der Untersuchung der menschlichen Natur: Worin besteht sie und kann sie Grenzen für die Technik diktieren? Abschließend werden die im Buch behandelten Aspekte in der Frage fokussiert, ob es wünschenswert ist, die maximale Lebensspanne des Menschen zu vergrößern. (shrink)

A many-faceted beast, the metaphysics of relations can be approached from many angles. One could begin with the various ways in which relational states are expressed in natural language. If a more historical treatment is wanted, one could begin with Plato, Aristotle, or Leibniz. In the following, I will approach the topic by first drawing on Russell’s Principles of Mathematics (1903) (still a natural-enough starting point), and then turn to a discussion mainly of positionalism.
