Social scientists increasingly use social media data to illuminate long-standing substantive questions in social science research. However, a key challenge of analyzing such data is their lower level of individual detail compared to highly detailed survey data. This limits the scope of substantive questions that can be addressed with these data. In this study, we provide a method to upgrade individual detail in terms of ethnicity in data gathered from social media via the use of register data. Our research aim (...) is twofold: first, we predict the most likely value of ethnicity, given one's first name, and second, we show how one can test hypotheses with the predicted values for ethnicity as an independent variable while simultaneously accounting for the uncertainty in these predictions. We apply our method to social network data collected from Facebook. We illustrate our approach and provide an example of hypothesis testing using our procedure, i.e., estimating the relation between predicted network ethnic homogeneity on Facebook and trust in institutions. In a comparison of our method with two other methods, we find that our method provides the most conservative tests of hypotheses. We discuss the promise of our approach and pinpoint future research directions. (shrink)

People narrating the experience of dysregulated anger after a brain injury call upon metaphor in patterned ways to help them make sense of their situation. Here, I analyze the use of the metaphor of the doubled self in a personal narrative of brain injury, and I situate this metaphor in its cultural history by analyzing Dr Jekyll and Mr Hyde and The Incredible Hulk as landmark moments in its development. A pattern of thought reflecting Seneca’s philosophy on the incompatibility of (...) anger with rational selfhood emerges. I discuss implications for the way we care for people struggling with post-brain-injury anger. (shrink)

We introduce a new model construction for Martin-Löf intensional type theory, which is sound and complete for the 1-truncated version of the theory. The model formally combines, by gluing along the functor from the category of contexts to the category of groupoids, the syntactic model with a notion of realizability. As our main application, we use the model to analyse the syntactic groupoid associated to the type theory generated by a graph G, showing that it has the same homotopy type (...) as the free groupoid generated by G. This study analyzes the metaphoric and metonymic nature ofbaş/kafa‘head’ in Turkish idiomatic expressions from a cognitive linguistic perspective. The database for the study is composed of idioms containing the two head-denoting wordsbaşandkafa. Idioms and their definitions are analyzed in terms of their figurative uses of abstract concepts, and the conceptual metaphors and metonymies are identified. Findings are examined under five categories: head as the representative of the person, the seat of mental faculties, the locus of emotions, the sign of superiority/power, (...) and the sign of value. The study proposes a cultural model in which the image schemaswhole-part,containmentandverticalityplay a key role, and reveals cross-cultural similarities and differences in the conceptualization ofhead. The study also provides further support for the embodiment thesis, and underscores the impact of cultural processes in shaping the way the body is conceptualized. (shrink)

The world science describes tends to have a very strange look. We can’t see atoms or force fields, nor are they imaginable within visualizable categories, so neither can we even imagine what the world must be like according to recent physical theories. That tension, between what science depicts as reality and how things appear to us, though it is more striking now, has been with us since modern science began. It can be addressed, and perhaps alleviated by inquiring into how (...) science represents nature. In general, representation is selective, the selection is of what is relevant to the purpose at hand, and success may even require distortion. From this point of view, the constraint on science, that it must ‘save the phenomena’, takes on a new form. The question to be faced is how the perspectival character of the appearances (that is, contents of measurement outcomes) can be related to the hidden structure that the sciences postulate. In the competing interpretations of quantum mechanics we can see how certain traditional ideals and constraints are left behind. Specifically, Carlo Rovelli’s Relational Quantum Mechanics offers a probative example of the freedom of scientific representation. (shrink)

Locatedness is one of the fundamental notions in constructive mathematics. The existence of a positivity predicate on a locale, i.e. the locale being overt, or open, has proved to be fundamental in constructive locale theory. We show that the two notions are intimately connected.Bishop defines a metric space to be compact if it is complete and totally bounded. A subset of a totally bounded set is again totally bounded iff it is located. So a closed subset of a Bishop compact (...) set is Bishop compact iff it is located. We translate this result to formal topology. ‘Bishop compact’ is translated as compact and overt. We propose a definition of locatedness on subspaces of a formal topology, and prove that a closed subspace of a compact regular formal space is located iff it is overt. Moreover, a Bishop-closed subset of a complete metric space is Bishop compact — that is, totally bounded and complete — iff its localic completion is compact overt.Finally, we show by elementary methods that the points of the Vietoris locale of a compact regular locale are precisely its compact overt sublocales.We work constructively, predicatively and avoid the use of the axiom of countable choice. We study operators with located graph in Bishop-style constructive mathematics. It is shown that a bounded operator has an adjoint if and only if its graph is located. Locatedness of the graph is a necessary and sufficient condition for an unbounded normal operator to have a spectral decomposition. These results suggest that located operators are the right generalization of bounded operators with an adjoint.

Projet En développant son « empirisme constructif », Bas Van Fraassen est devenu une référence incontournable pour la philosophie des sciences contemporaine. Après la vague de critiques qui, vers les années 1960, avait fait perdre à l'empirisme logique sa prédominance dans le champ des idées, le réalisme scientifique semblait s'être imposé comme le seul compte rendu acceptable du travail et des orientations de la recherche. Quine avait beau énoncer ce que pourrait être un empirisme affranchi de ses deux « dogmes (...) » (l'intangibilité de la distinction vérités analytiques / vérités synthétiques, et la réduction des constructions aux « faits »), le programme d'une philosophie des sciences empiriste renouvelée restait à l'état d'esquisse. Mais par trois ouvrages successifs, Scientific Image (1980), Laws and symmetry (1989), et Quantum mechanics an empiricist view (1991), Van Fraassen a posé les bases d'un empirisme viable, parce que capable de prendre en charge la plupart des spécificités dont se prévaut le réalisme contre l'empirisme classique ou logique, et de rendre raison des développements les plus actuels de la physique. Contre l'empirisme classique ou logique, les réalistes font d'abord valoir que la réduction de toute réalité et de tout acte de référence aux phénomènes, ne rend justice ni à la pratique du langage courant ni à celle des sciences. Lorsque quelqu'un procède à une dénomination, il ne cherche pas à désigner par là une tranche d'apparaître, ou quelque ensemble fini et répertorié d'apparitions; il pointe vers "quelque chose" dont les modalités de manifestation sans fin assignable sont pour partie anticipées et pour partie ouvertes. De même, quand un chercheur scientifique parle de l'objet de ses investigations, il ne limite pas son discours à un ensemble fini de résultats d'expérience obtenus sous des conditions instrumentales actuellement disponibles; il renvoie à une entité dont la variété des manifestations futures est prévue aussi complètement que possible (et avec un succès croissant) par des cadres conceptuels et théoriques révisables. Face à cette objection, Van Fraassen fait jouer un rôle capital aux modèles dans sa version de l'empirisme.. (shrink)

We give an introduction to Turing categories, which are a convenient setting for the categorical study of abstract notions of computability. The concept of a Turing category first appeared in the work of Longo and Moggi; later, Di Paolo and Heller introduced the closely related recursion categories. One of the purposes of Turing categories is that they may be used to develop categorical formulations of recursion theory, but they also include other notions of computation, such as models of combinatory logic (...) and of the lambda calculus. In this paper our aim is to give an introduction to the basic structural theory, while at the same time illustrating how the notion is a meeting point for various other areas of logic and computation. We also provide a detailed exposition of the connection between Turing categories and partial combinatory algebras and show the sense in which the study of Turing categories is equivalent to the study of PCAs. Eğer bu dönemde giderilmesi gereken ihtiyaçlar giderilmez veya geciktirilse bu durum çocuğun gelişimini olumsuz etkileyebilir. Bireyin bu dönemde yaşadığı tecrübelerin sıklığı ve niteliği onun kimlik, kişilik ve benliğinin temelini oluşturmaktadır. Bu dönem kritik dönem olarak adlandırılmaktadır. Çocukluk döneminde kazanılması gereken bilgi ve davranışlar kazanılmazsa telafisi zor olabilir. Eğer yanlış öğrenilmiş (...) ise düzeltilmesi güç olabilir. O halde öncelikle çocuğa kazandırılacak bilgilerin doğru ve çocuğun yaşına uygun olması önemlidir. Okul öncesi dönemi çocukları için çevre önemlidir. Onlar öğrenmelerini etrafını gözlemleyerek, gördüklerini ve duyduklarını tecrübe ederek gerçekleştirmektedir. Bu dönemde çocuğun yaşadığı çevrede, aile ortamında kullanılan kelimeler, kavramlar, deyimler ve anne-babanın davranışları onun zihin şemasını oluşturmaktadır. Çocukların erken yaşta dini kavramları duyması, telaffuz etmesi ve kullanması onların din duygusunun ve din dillerinin gelişimine katkı sağlayabilir. Söz konusu dönemde çocuklar bu kavramların ne anlama geldiğini anlayamayabilir. Belki bu kavramları yanlış da kullanabilir. Ancak söz konusu tecrübeler çocuğun yetişkinlik döneminde vereceği kararlarını etkileyebilir. Çocukluk dönemindeki yaşantının çeşitliliği ve niteliği onun sağlıklı bir kimlik, kişilik ve benlik oluşumu için çok değerlidir. Bu dönemde çocukların maddi, manevi ihtiyaçları gelişim seviyelerine uygun ve dengeli bir şekilde giderildiği zaman ilerleyen yaş döneminde kendisiyle ve çevresiyle barışık bir birey yetişmiş olacaktır. Çalışmanın problemini çocukların din dili ve dini duygularının gelişiminde ninnilerin yeri ve önemi nedir? sorusu oluşturmaktadır. Araştırmanın amacı ise çocukluk döneminde anneler tarafından söylenen ninnilerin çocukların dini duygu, din dili ve dil gelişimindeki yerini ve önemini var olan alanyazın üzerinden ortaya koymaktır. Çalışma özellikle çocukluk döneminde anneler tarafından söylenen ninnilerin çocukların din dili ve dini duygu gelişimine etkisi ile sınırlandırılmıştır. Araştırmada nitel araştırma yöntemlerinden belge tarama tekniği kullanılmıştır. Ninnilerin anne ile çocuk arasında sevgi, bağlanma, güvenme gibi duyguların gelişmesine de katkı sağladığı görülmüştür. Ninnilerin çocukların erken yaşta konuşmalarına ve kelimeleri doğru telaffuz etmelerine katkı sağladığı tespit edilmiştir. Ninnilerin sadece çocukları uyutmak veya uykudan uyandırmak için değil aynı zamanda annelerin sevinç, mutluluk, hüzün ve kederlerini çocukları ile paylaşma aracı olarak kullanıldığı tespit edilmiştir. Ninnilerin çocukların din dili ve dini duygularının gelişimine katkı sağladığı çalışmanın tespitleri arasında yer almaktadır. (shrink)
