The article briefly reviews the external pressures for teaching business ethics. It then summarizes why teaching business ethics across the curriculum is essentially a necessity in the current environment. This leads to a discussion of six commonly adopted elements used when seeking to improve a business ethics curriculum. The case study uses these six elements to provide insights into contemporary challenges facing many business schools. The particular contribution of this article is in the area of methods to assess the status (...) of the curriculum. The case study provides details about a faculty survey used as a compelling tool to kick-start a business ethics curriculum upgrade, not only based on the information that it yields, but the potent opportunity for conversation and collaboration. Förintelsen är ett historiskt skeende som är närvarande i en svensk samtid och bearbetas inom kultursektorn, politiken, forsknings­ och skolvärlden av både det svenska majoritetssamhället och den judiska minoriteten. Under 2010­-talet har de överlevandes barnbarn trätt fram och kallar sig för den tredje generationens överlevande. Några ur den generationen har självmant tagit på sig ansvaret att berätta sina mor­ och farföräldrars historier i både muntlig och skriftlig form. Tillsammans formar dessa skildringar ett transmedialt berättande som innehåller mytiska strukturer, element och (...) språkbruk. Syftet med artikeln är därför att belysa detta mönster. Artikeln bygger på ett socialantropologiskt fältarbete i Stockholm som genomfördes under 2010­-talet. Observationer genomfördes på ett flertal platser i Stockholm med omnejd, och därtill gjordes intervjuer med personer från den tredje generationen. Analysen fokuserar på det transmediala berättandet, framförallt texter och radioprogram som producerats av den tredje generationen, och den struktur, de mönster och de språkliga symboler som den tredje generationen valt att centrera berättelserna kring. Članek obravnava vizijo in načrtovano sporočilo serije KAOS (Charlie Covell, Netflix 2024) v kontekstu novejših avdiovizualnih produkcij, kjer nastopajo vplivne družine, ter s primerjanjem mitov, preoblikovanih za potrebe serije, z dejanskimi miti. Pokazati želi, da serija odraža aktualna vprašanja in izzive, podobne brezčasnim človeškim skrbem, ki jih najdemo v mitih. Posebej zanimiva je karakterizacija ženskih likov, ki se osredotoča zlasti na protagonistki Evridiko in Ariadno. Serija združuje prepoznavne elemente klasičnih mitov s sodobno feministično perspektivo in ponuja nov pristop k antičnim (...) pripovedim. Ne le, da se pri tem umešča v ustaljeno mrežo klasične recepcije, temveč tudi zavestno povečuje zastopanost ženskih mitoloških likov. Preučevanje upodobitev Evridike in Ariadne ta dva lika kontekstualizira znotraj sodobne recepcije obeh mitoloških osebnosti in poudarja elemente, značilne za KAOS, denimo svojske spremembe v mitološkem izročilu o obeh junakinjah. Avtorici ugotavljata, da se feministično razumevanje obeh likov ujema s širšimi trendi v klasični recepciji in odpira prostor za dojemanje obeh antičnih žensk, prostih okvirov mitičnega etosa in časa. Le libertinage est un phénomène hétérogène qui se caractérise par plusieurs attitudes de pensée et de mœurs. La contestation des valeurs chrétiennes est un élément commun liant toutes les formes du libertinage. Le libertinage érudit qui se caractérise par le naturalisme et le scepticisme au regard de toutes vérités universelles est une des variétés caractéristiques du libertinage au XVIe et au XVIIe siècles. Il associait les hommes de lettres, les hommes de sciences, les fonctionnaires publics cependant il ne constituait pas (...) un système homogène. Aussi des personnages associés au libertinage érudit ne créèrent aucun groupe formel et aucune association. Le libertinage de mœurs se développait simultanément au courant du libertinage érudit. L'œuvre de P. Gassendi avait une influence sur le développement de ce courant. Le libertinage de mœurs est très connu et répandu grâce aux histoires amoureuses, aux flirts et aux scandales amoureux. Cependant il serait faux de définir et de déterminer le phénomène de tout le libertinage uniquement en catégories de la liberté de mœurs et du relâchement des mæurs. Sans aucun doute le libertinage de mœurs contribua au changement du statut social, de l'identité sexuelle et culturelle des femmes. Celles qui se trouvaient dans les chaînes du mariage, ne possédant pas de liberté de l'activité publique ni politique commencèrent à apercevoir la possibilité de s'activer et de se libérer de l'espace privé. La matérialité et la sensualité ne se développèrent pas uniquement sous l'influence de la relativisation des mœurs mais aussi, comme le prouva M. Foucault, grâce aux «livres de bonne confession». Le catalogue des fautes et des péchés concernant la sphère sexuelle qui y furent inscrits était de plus en plus détaillé. Cela résultait de nouvelles doutes des croyants en question de la nature du péché. Ainsi ces livres devinrent un type de guide de la sphère sensuelle. Les œuvres du marquis de œade sont les plus controversées en matière du libertinage de mœurs. L'évaluation de ses œuvres comprend en soi la condamnation des œuvres ainsi que du style de vie du marquis de œade, les accusations, l'immoralisme et le blasphème, la cruauté et la violence. Les champs de recherche et d'interprétation essaient d'analyser ses œuvres aussi en référence au problème des limites de la liberté de l’homme, sa solitude; elles sont aussi interprétées en tant que «philosophie du crime». Parmi plusieurs théories qui traitent le problématique du libertinage, il est apparu celle qui cherche des relations entre son développement et la croissance de la résistance par rapport à l'absolutisme depuis le XVIIe siècle. Cela devrait être lié à l'inquiétude du pouvoir public due à la liberté excessive de mœurs. Du point de vue du pouvoir public, le danger était constitué par le caractère privé et l'intimité - les situations où dans un groupe des personnes fidèles, sans présence des tierces personnes, s'effectuerait le changement de pensée, d'idées probablement dangereuses pour l'ordre public; par conséquent des contrôles officiels plus fréquents eurent lieu. Le libertinage de l'époque de la Renaissance modifia sa forme et son caractère. Au XVIIIe siècle toute la mosaїque et la diversification des formes du libertinage de mœurs sous l'influence de la monotonie ennuyeuse croissante, de l'atmosphère de l'inquiétude et du pressentiment de l'aube de l'époque, souvent s'exprima en lassitude décadente, fatigue, poursuite des divertissements. Le désespoir et les doutes emparèrent des intellectuels et des philosophes de la Renaissance; la libérer l’homme de toutes les contraintes égalment celles qui sont proclamées par le christianisme. Dans ce contexte le phénomène du libertinage cessa de remplir la fonction de la proposition du style de vie innovant même si souvent controversé qui en matière de mœurs fut même scandaleux, ainsi que de la manière à participer à l'ordre culturelle et de civilisation. Ce fut l'un des symptômes de la crise des valeurs de la Renaissance et la prémisse de l'atmosphère pessimiste. (shrink)

L’éthique de la vertu d’Annas est confrontée à l’objection de la circularité. Annas affirme qu’une âme juste est disposée à poser des actes justes. On contourne l’objection de la circularité si l’on ne définit l’âme juste ni en termes d’actes bons, ni en termes de règles. En m’appuyant sur les récents travaux de Korsgaard, je démontre que l’argument d’Annas se heurte de nouveau à l’objection de la circularité. Ensuite, j’examine de quelle façon Annas tente une fois de plus d’éviter l’objection (...) de la circularité en faisant appel à la communauté des vertueux. Je soutiens que cette démarche ne préserve sa théorie ni du relativisme, ni de l’objection de la circularité. (shrink)

IntroductionRights-ethicists intensely debate what properties of an individual are necessary and sufficient in order for that individual to have moral rights. At the heart of this important debate is the issue of whether individuals such as human foetuses, infants, and unconscious adults have moral rights, and if so, what these rights are. This paper focuses on the moral status of unconscious adults, as well as human foetuses, which are potential agents in the sense that they follow a “normal” path of (...) development towards agency. Using Michael Tooley’s (Tooley 1983) and Jeff McMahan’s (McMahan 2002) influential discussions on this topic as a point of departure, this paper defends two claims. (1) Possession of the capacity for autonomous agency that is temporarily “blocked” by sleep or coma is sufficient in order for an individual to have intrinsic worth and thus, moral rights. Material artefacts consist of many smaller – and ultimately natural – objects such as molecules and atoms that have been intentionally rearranged in such a way as to take the shape of a particular artefact and fulfil its functions. Whenever the arrangement of several parts results in properties that go beyond the properties of the individual parts or their sum, it can be said that this arrangement has resulted in a new object. Once created, material artefacts may take part in (...) natural processes such as reproduction and evolution and cannot be fundamentally distinguished from fully natural objects. This article provides a number of – mainly biological – examples that show the traditional Aristotelian dichotomy between nature and artefacts to be highly problematic and suggest a continuum instead. Most importantly, it is argued that living beings and artefacts are equally capable – or sometimes incapable – of self-reproduction and that there are numerous objects which are both living beings and artefacts. In his book Reasons and Persons, Derek Parfit suggests that people are not harmed by being conceived with a disease or disability if they could not have existed without suffering that particular condition. He nevertheless contends that entities can be harmed if the suffering they experience is sufficiently severe. By implication, there is a threshold which divides harmful from non-harmful conceptions. The assumption that such a threshold exists has come to play a part in UK policy making. I argue that (...) Parfit’s distinction between harmful and non-harmful conceptions is untenable. Drawing on Kant’s refutation of the ontological argument for God’s existence, I suggest that the act of creation cannot be identical with the act of harming—nor indeed of benefiting—however great the offspring’s suffering may be. I suggest that Parfit is right that bringing children into existence does not usually harm them, but I argue that this must be applied to all conceptions, since Parfit cannot show how the harm threshold can be operationalised. If we think certain conceptions are unethical or should be illegal, this must be on other grounds than that the child is harmed by them. I show that a Millian approach in this context fails to exemplify the empirical and epistemological advantages which are commonly associated with it, and that harm-based legislation would need to be based on broader harm considerations than those relating to the child who is conceived. This article is both an elaborated critique on the one-sided analysis of the misogynist nature of ballet as a cultural practice, and a contribution to a more embodied feminist theory. Based on empirical material, that was brought together by observing the body practices in ballet and listening to the life stories of dancers, the author explores the contradictions that the body in ballet provokes. In describing the embodied experiences ofprofessional ballet dancers she shows that ballet offers women the possibility to (...) transcend the discontinuity of body, mind and emotions. (shrink)

Biopolitics and dystopia: genomics in Michael Crichton’s Next Resumen: En este artículo se busca demostrar que, mientras el desarrollo científico es propulsado por el pensamiento tecno-optimista, el discurso prevalente sobre genómica en la cultura de masas es pesimista y tiene potencial para impedir la construcción de respuestas adecuadas a los desafíos biopolíticos por parte de los sistemas políticos y jurídicos. Aquí se sostiene que la utopía genómica es la única propuesta optimista que estimula las investigaciones científicas y que permite pensar (...) en las posibles regulaciones y los cambios necesarios para la conceptualización de la idea de propiedad. Estos problemas son ilustrados con la ayuda del libro de Michael Crichton, Next, que proporciona numerosos ejemplos distópicos. Summary: The article seeks to demonstrate that while scientific development is pro- pelled by technooptimistic thought, the prevalent discourse about genomics is pessimistic, which has the potential to forestall the construction of an adequate answer on the part of political and legal systems. It is shown that genomic utopia is the only optimistic proposition which stimulates scientific research as well as enables thinking about regulations and the necessary changes in the conceptualization of the idea of property. These problems are illustrated with the help of Michael Crichton’s book Next, which provides numerous dystopian examples. The article provides an argument on the Soviet system of the early post-Stalinist years reflected in Haidamaky by Yurii Mushketyk. Through the concept of “body economy” inspired by Deleuze and Guattari’s schizoanalysis, it investigates the case of the female corporeality hidden in the novel. The article contests that the female body is part of the economy of desire flows which connected it to the male body. Jamal al-Din al-Afghani (1838-97) was a pan-Islamic thinker, political activist, and journalist, who sought to revive Islamic thought and liberate the Muslim world from Western influence. Many aspects of his life and his background remain unknown or controversial, including his birthplace, his religious affiliation, and the cause of his death. He was likely born in Asadabad, near present-day Hamadan, Iran. His better known history begins when he was 18, with a one-year stay in India that coincided with the Sepoy Mutiny (...) of 1857-59. In what would become a life of constant travel, he soon went to Mecca to perform Hajj, before returning to Afghanistan to join the service of the country's ruler, Dost Mohammad Khan (1793-1863). He later sided with Dost's son Mohammad Aʻzam, who ultimately lost in a power struggle with his British-supported brother Sher Ali. Al-Afghani's political activism eventually took him to Paris, London, Tehran, Saint Petersburg, and Constantinople. It was during his second stay in Egypt (1871-79) that he cemented his role as a reformer. He found in Cairo a class of young intellectuals who gathered around him, established newspapers, and used these papers to disseminate his ideas. Chief among al-Afghani's Egyptian disciples were scholar Muhammad ʻAbduh, journalist ʻAbd Allah al-Nadim, and nationalist politicians Mustafa Kamil and Saʻd Zaghlul. Al-Afghani's influence on both modernist and traditionalist Islamic thought continues to the present. An activist who sought to effect change through political journalism and public speaking, he did not write many books. This treatise, entitled al-Radd ʻalā al-dahrīyīn (Refutation of the materialists), was a rebuttal of the views of the pro-British Sir Sayyid Ahmad Khan, who had argued that science is more important than religion in the rise of civilizations. First written in Persian following al-Afghani's exile from Egypt to India, it was translated into Arabic by his student Muhammad ʻAbduh, with the help of al-Afghani's assistant Arif Efendi. (shrink)

Time, history and culture are the main factors which influence a man’s identity. The article presents the views of the Polish philosopher Julian Ochorowicz concerning the development of the Polish national character. It also discusses the problem of patriotism and stereotypes, which often distort the perception of a nation and its history. One of the interesting notions suggested by Ochorowicz is the so-called “collective national soul”. Recent theories on abstract concepts and words (ACs), such as Words As social Tools (WAT) (Borghi et al., 2019b) and Language is an Embodied Neuroenhancement and Scaffold (LENS) (Dove, 2019) have underlined the crucial role of both sensorimotor experience and language for ACs representation and use [see Dove et al. (2020), for a comparison]. Here we focus on the WAT view. WAT highlights the role of language, sociality, and inner grounding (interoception, metacognition) for ACs. Furthermore, WAT seeks to integrate a (...) developmental perspective with approaches focusing on conceptual use and brain representation. We briefly illustrate evidence coming from both clinical and non-clinical populations and identify areas where additional evidence that ACs evoke linguistic, social, and interoceptive experience is still needed.
