If we return to the experiences of our youth, we perceive what had the power to awaken our curiosity and ambitions*. The non-conformism of the Surrealists was fostered by Romantic sources and every conceivable symbolism; even if in a roundabout manner, it was through them that the names of Klee and Kandinsky were first heard. The world of the marvellous, the only one decreed worthy of attention, opened out onto painting. The moderns of the group: Dali, Tanguy, Masson, received first (...) prize for poetic adventure, but they harked back to certain selected precursors—rightly or wrongly—for the same gifts that they had themselves: Uccello, Bosch, Dürer, Blake, and Gustave Moreau. And indeed, by retaining only the unexpected, the fantastic, and (often indulgently) the scandalous, a taste was maintained for emotional shock and association, as exemplified by the sustained style of André Breton, and the more supple prose of Aragon. In representative democracies, the absence of responsiveness by elected officials to the interests of the represented often generates problems of legitimacy, accountability and effectiveness. However, responsiveness also tends to narrow the time horizons of democratic decision-making and promote short-termism. This paper advances the notion that responsiveness to interests involving distant time horizons is possible by reconfiguring the franchise in a time-sensitive and future-oriented way. It is divided into two parts. The first pinpoints a few inconsistencies in the available proposals for (...) making responsiveness and the long term compatible (e.g., promoting youth turnout, narrowing the franchise to robust epistemic fitness, establishing future-oriented institutions). The second advances the creation of temporal electoral circles operating alongside territorial electoral circles in order to prompt responsiveness to multitemporal interests. The conclusion asserts that this kind of franchise design is the best available option for introducing temporal aspects into the character of democratic representation. (shrink)

One of the current debates in philosophy of mind is whether the content of perceptual experiences is conceptual or nonconceptual. The proponents of nonconceptual content, or nonconceptualists, typically support their position by appealing to the so-called Fineness of Grain Argument, which, in rough terms, has as its conclusion that we do not possess concepts for everything we perceive. In his Mind and World, John McDowell tried to give a response to the argument, and show that we do possess concepts for (...) everything we perceive. His response is based on the idea that we have a capacity to recognize all that we perceive. However, a good number of people took this proposal as being empirically false. My aim in this paper is to show that McDowell’s proposal is not only not empirically false, but likely to be empirically true. We do have the capacity to recognize all that we perceive, but such recognition capacity is dependent on information stored in short-term memory, and not in longterm memory, as McDowell’s critics have mistakenly supposed. The “paradox of deontology” depends partly upon ignoring the special responsibility each person has for her own actions, and partly upon ignoring the essential differences between refraining from X and persuading another to refrain. But only in part; the paradoxical situations schematized by Shaw can occasionally occur. When they do, his pragmatic defense of deontology is sound.

Murayama and Jach offer valuable suggestions for how to integrate computational processes into motivation theory, but these processes cannot do away with motivation altogether. Rewards are only rewarding because people want and like them – that is, because of motivation. Sexual desire is not primarily a quest for rewarding information. Elucidating the interface between motivation and cognition seems a promising way forward.

Bien que Nietzsche n'ait cessé de se réclamer de la phlologie, il cessa un jour de pratiquer ce qu'on appelle cemmunément ainsi. Quel fut, pour Nietzsche, le statut de cette philologie-là? le présent article cherche à répondre à cette question, en étudiant un text qui n'a guèrre été commenté, les Diadokhai des Philosophes préplatoniciens, rédigé en 1873/4. A la différence de autres études laetiennes de Nietzsche, où la Quellenforschung semble ètre pratiquée pour elle-même, la «recherche des sources», dans les Diadokhai, (...) est directement, quoique implicitement, mise au service de la réévaluation des philosphes préplaniciens, à laquelle Nietzsche travaille par ailleurs dans les Leçons sur les préplatoniciens qu'il professe à Bàle entre les années 1969/70 et 1876. Ainsi se manifeste pour un temps, chez Nietzsche même, la solidarité entre l' «histoire des sommets» et la travail du tácheron, fugitivement thématisé dans la Seconde inactuelle.Obwohl Nietzsche niemals aufhörte, sich auf die Philologie zu verufen, hat er doch eines Tages aufgehört zu praktizieren, was man gewöhnlich so nennt. Was war für Nietzsche der Status dieser Philologie? der Aufsatz will eine Antwort auf diese Frage geben, indem er einen Text untersucht, der bisher kaum kommentiert wurde, die Διαδοχαί der vorplatonischen Philosophen von 1873/74. Im Unterschied zu zanderen Studien Nietzsches zu Laertius, in denen er Quellenforschung um ihrer selbst willen zu prakizien scheint, setzt er sie hier direkt, wenn auch implizit, zur Umwertung der vorplatonischen Philosphen ein, an der Nietzsche außerdem in seinen Vorlesungen über die vorplatonischen Philosophen arbeitet, die er in Basel von 1869/70 bis 1876 hält. So zeigt sich auf Zeit bei Nietzsche selbst die Nähe der 'Gipfel-Geschichte' und der mühsamen Arbeit, wie in der Zweiten Unzeitgemässen Betrashtung flüchtig thematisiert wird. (shrink)

An argument for why Plato’s Laws can be considered his most important political dialogue In Plato's Second Republic, André Laks argues that the Laws, Plato’s last and longest dialogue, is also his most important political work, surpassing the Republic in historical relevance. Laks offers a thorough reappraisal of this less renowned text, and examines how it provides a critical foundation for the principles of lawmaking. In doing so, he makes clear the tremendous impact the Laws had not only on political (...) philosophy, but also on modern political history. Laks shows how the four central ideas in the Laws—the corruptibility of unchecked power, the rule of law, a “middle” constitution, and the political necessity of legislative preambles—are articulated within an intricate and masterful literary architecture. He reveals how the work develops a theological conception of law anchored in political ideas about a god, divine reason, that is the measure of political order. Laks’s reading opens a complex analysis of the relationships between rulers and citizens; their roles in a political system; the power of reason and persuasion, as opposed to force, in commanding obedience; and the place of freedom. Chama-nos a atenção a relação político-religiosa desenvolvida por cristãos no ambiente laico da política brasileira. O portal de notícias Último Segundo destacou que o nome de Deus foi citado 59 vezes, quase a mesma quantidade de vezes que o termo “corrupção”, na votação do impeachment da presidente Dilma Rousseff na Câmara dos Deputados. Será que as experiências de fé destes políticos os impulsionam para estes tipos de declarações – ou seu Deus assim os exige? Ou então, será que os ensinamentos (...) doutrinários destes cristãos os levam a tais pronunciamentos político-religiosos? É objetivo da presente pesquisa propor um caminho para o cristão brasileiro desenvolver sua vida política em harmonia com sua experiência de Deus e em harmonia com a realidade laica do Estado Democrático de Direito. O livro de Ester, presente no cânon católico e protestante, cujo assunto predominante é a relação política entre as personagens da história, nos fornece princípios que nos ajudam neste tipo de relação. Além disto, Joseph Ratzinger nos ajuda a aprofundar a relação entre política e religião e João Calvino colabora para a amplitude do significado da experiência de Deus relatada no livro de Ester. Estes princípios de Ester somados às opiniões dos teólogos com que dialogamos colaboram para que este cristão contemporâneo possa reger sua vida política de forma coerente com sua experiência de Deus e de forma coerente com o ambiente político brasileiro. Esta pesquisa se propõe a ser uma forma de análise da práxis cristã, tendo como ponto de partida a experiência místico-religiosa. A resposta de Friedrich Schleiermacher ao Iluminismo tem muito a nos beneficiar, principalmente se levarmos em consideração as críticas de Rudolf Otto. A compreensão do “sentimento de dependência” em Schleiermacher, que se torna em Otto “sentimento de criatura”, e a realidade da experiência de Deus que se conecta à práxis, nos fornecem um excelente ponto de partida para compreensão daquilo (...) que move as pessoas a uma vida de renúncia, servidão e comprometimento com valores e princípios do Evangelho de Jesus Cristo. Com base em uma pesquisa de campo, foi possível perceber que existe uma conexão entre a práxis cristã e a experiência religiosa. Quando há experiência religiosa, há ações cristãs executadas com naturalidade, com maior incidência do que quando não existe tal experiência. Podemos ter muito a perder se acaso deixarmos de considerar o aspecto experiencial da fé cristã com o sagrado. Em primeiro lugar, em nossas formulações teológicas, as quais podem, em maior ou menor grau, enfatizar em demasia aspectos antropocêntricos, deixando de lado o aspecto numinoso. Em segundo lugar, perderemos a oportunidade de influenciar a igreja a vivenciar uma prática espiritual real, que considere, com toda a relevância devida, a experiência de fé e não somente aspectos catequéticos. Por fim, perderemos a possibilidade de analisar a vida de fé, tendo como ponto de partida a experiência de Deus, que pode ter sido agente influenciador número um para uma vida de exemplo de práxis cristã genuína. Le parcours que je me propose de faire par la pensée cartésienne passe par les moments suivants : d’abord, on essaie de découvrir dans la pensée médiévale tardive, en prenant comme référence non pas seulement Nicolas de Cues, mais aussi quelques aspects du nominalisme, l’émergence d’une métaphysique du pouvoir qui a, elle aussi, comme point de départ, le concept d’infini ; deuxièmement, on essaie de démontrer comment cette métaphysique du pouvoir passe, en Descartes, par sa théorie de la création des (...) vérités éternelles, par les noms qu’il va privilégier pour parler de Dieu et par le concept de causa sui ; troisièmement, on voit comment cette métaphysique du pouvoir se réfléchit dans une anthropologie de la volonté qui réinterprète, d’une façon tout à fait particulière, le motif médiéval de l’homme en tant que « imago Dei » ; finalement, on voit comment l’essence de la pensée « sub specie machinae » peut être vue, en même temps, comme une affirmation du pouvoir de l’homme dans une anticipation du « verum ipsum factum » de Vico, déjà anticipé aussi dans la pensée cusaine et dans sa conception créatrice de la connaissance humaine.
