The works of Gilles Deleuze -- on cinema, literature, painting, and philosophy -- have made him one of the most widely read thinkers of his generation. In the past, researchers have focused mainly on the effects and consequences of self-awareness; however, they have neglected a more basic issue pertaining to the specific mechanisms that initiate and sustain self-perception. The author presents a model of self-awareness that proposes the existence of 3 sources of self-information. First, the social milieu includes early face-to-face interactions, self-relevant feedback, a social comparison mechanism that leads to perspective taking, and audiences. Second, contacts with objects and structures in the physical environment foster self–world (...) differentiation in infants; this environment also contains self-focusing and reflecting stimuli, such as mirrors and video cameras. Third, the self can develop bodily awareness through proprioception and can reflect on itself using imagery and inner speech. Furthermore, self-awareness is mainly mediated by the prefrontal lobes. The author establishes various links among these different neurological, social, ecological, and cognitive elements of the model. (shrink)

In this essay, Alain Caillé reconstructs the “singular history of the MAUSS (Anti-Utilitarian Movement in the Social Sciences)” from when in early 1980 a group of friends from different disciplines (sociologists, economists, philosophers, etc.) decided to found the “Bulletin du MAUSS” to counter the growing hegemony of utilitarianism and economism in the human sciences and in the philosophical disciplines themselves. The Bulletin would initially become the “Revue du MAUSS trimestrielle” from 1988 to 1992 and from 1993 to 2022 the (...) “Revue du MAUSS semestrielle” until its current anglophone extension “MAUSS International”. The author takes Marcel Mauss’ definition of the gift as a “total social fact” and explains that the gift paradigm is a “translation operator” in the sense that it is continuously enriched in interaction with existing discourses. The theoretical operation that Caillé proposes is to explicate Mauss’s discovery by moving from a simple gift paradigm, based on the perspective of simple reciprocity between giver and recipient, to an expanded gift paradigm. In this way, it can dialogue with other paradigms and other currents of thought (theory of recognition, theory of care, theory of human development, etc.). And from here to a conception of the gift as “adonnement”, i.e. the commitment of human subjects to bring something new and unprecedented into the world. (shrink)

For over one hundred years, his ideas on economy, social relations, and exchange have inspired new modes of thought, none more so than what crystallized in the 1980s around an innovative group of French academics. In The Gift Paradigm, Alain Caillé provides the first in-depth, English-language introduction to La Revue du MAUSS - or, "Anti-Utilitarian (...) Movement in the Social Sciences," combining the work of anthropologists, sociologists, philosophers, and others. Today, the very idea of a "general social science" seems unthinkable, unless you count the pervasive sway of a utilitarian logic in orthodox economics, or the diffuse influence of neoliberalism. The purpose of this paper was to provide an example from phenomenological research of moving from rich descriptive interview data to coherent revelatory descriptions employing empathic bridges within the narrative structure of storytelling. We used transcribed data from two interviews concerning recovery from severe mental illness: one with an American woman in her early thirties, and the other with a Swedish man in his mid-thirties. Five investigators analyzed the transcribed data into individual first-person narrative descriptions according to existing empirical phenomenological (...) methods including an independent reading, identification of themes relevant to processes of recovery from severe mental illness, temporal ordering of themes meaningfully reflecting the sequence of the recounted events, and consensus development. Our findings support the use of empathic bridges as a methodological tool with the narrative structure of firstperson storytelling, as well as the viability and importance of employing this tool to better understand processes of recovery for persons with severe mental illness. Le traité (ou dialogue) « pythique » du platonicien Plutarque de Chéronée (Iier – IIe s. ap. J.-C.) intitulé Sur l’E de Delphes est consacré à l’élucidation de la signification de l’E (la cinquième lettre de l’alphabet grec) consacré à Apollon Pythien. Une des interprétations (d’inspiration pythagoricienne) est que cet E désigne le nombre cinq, le nombre de l’univers. Dans le cadre de l’exposé de cette interprétation est fait état de l’opinion « de certains » selon laquelle il existe une (...) correspondance entre les cinq sens et les cinq éléments. L’A. montre que les deux lignes où il est question de la vue (E 390b6-8) s’inspirent essentiellement de l’explication qu’en Timée 45b-d Platon donne du mécanisme de la vision en termes de mélange du feu pur émis par l’œil avec le feu pur extérieur qui produit la lumière du jour. L’extrême brièveté de ce résumé (empreint d’aristotélisme, l’élément associé à la vue étant ici l’éther considéré comme cinquième corps), d’un passage dans Platon offrant lui-même bon nombre de difficultés, explique que ces deux lignes énigmatiques n’aient jamais été bien comprises. Au passage, l’A. revient sur les notions d’homoiopatheia (d’homogénéité) et de summetria (de commensurabilité) en Timée 45b-d et 67c-e pour en proposer une interprétation qui souligne et éclaire d’un jour nouveau le caractère dynamique de l’explication platonicienne de la vision. Depuis quelques décennies, des réflexions éthiques sont menées sur les problèmes posés par les nouveaux réseaux de communication et d’information, avec comme élément clé l’ordinateur comme moteur et cadre de la transformation contemporaine à cet égard. Comme nous le rappelons, il est habituel d’aborder ce vaste domaine par sous-chantiers, avec des chapitres spécifiques sur la vie privée, etc. ; mais du même coup, en fonction de la complexité des enjeux, il devient clair que c’est l’ensemble de notre perspective sur ces (...) questions qui doit être modifiée, on ne peut se contenter d’une approche encyclopédique y allant par secteurs successifs. Le but de l’article est de montrer en quoi le cadre développé par Elinor Ostrom (prix Nobel 2009 en économie), appelé Institutional Analysis and Development, est susceptible de nous fournir des outils pertinents pour traiter les questions d’éthique qui se posent à l’heure des réseaux, même si ce modèle a des limites que nous mentionnerons. Ce qui suppose de présenter cette approche en soulignant son secteur initial d’émergence, la gouvernance des ressources naturelles. (shrink)

Les systèmes sociaux complexes étudiés par Elinor Ostrom et les chercheurs associés caractérisent souvent des réseaux de petite ou de moyenne échelle, tant pour des ressources matérielles qu’informationnelles. Mais d’un point de vue citoyen, les outils, institutions des collectifs sociopolitiques peuvent-ils être pensés sous l’angle des ressources communes et, à ce titre, donner lieu à l’émergence d’une gouvernance participative, en étant vus comme à préserver par les concernés? Pour favoriser une telle lecture, il nous faut clarifier quelques apports de l’école (...) d’Ostrom, amorcer une analyse sociale des composantes d’une gouvernance des communs fondée sur la participation et identifier certaines questions à creuser ultérieurement, notamment les problèmes posés dans le cadre d’une économie largement financiarisée et abstraite des besoins matériels les plus immédiats. Alfred Fouillée écrit à une époque marquée par l'affrontement de la France et de l'Allemagne et par la crainte d'une déchirure de la société face à l'emprise croissante des idées révolutionnaires et au déclin irréversible des formes traditionnelles d'autorité. Ses ouvrages consacrés à la "question sociale" ont assuré sa notoriété jusqu'à en faire le "parrain intellectuel" de la Troisième République, ce qui peut aussi expliquer le relatif oubli dont il est l'objet.Pourtant la signification et la portée de l'œuvre d'Alfred Fouillée (...) ne se réduisent pas à cette dimension. Il est aussi l'auteur d'une philosophie évolutionniste de la vie dont l'idée-force est le concept central. La vie est la synthèse de la force et de l'idée, et l'évolution est le processus par lequel l'accent passe de la force à l'idée. Du vivant au social, l'idée-force devient idéal et l'évolution, initialement involontaire, devient réforme volontaire. Si elle commence avec l'égoïsme et la lutte pour la vie, l'évolution ne prend son sens que par sa fin, l'altruisme et la fraternité. C'est pourquoi la démocratie est l'idée-force en politique, même si, du fait que l'évolution requiert maintenant la volonté et la liberté, la crise est le régime normal de la démocratie, si l'ont sait voir en elle l'aiguillon qui l'incite à s'approcher de son idéal. The object of this paper is to retrace the steps that led Buchanan from marginal cost pricing to clubs. We claim that the idea individuals could form clubs to finance public goods can be traced back to his first works on public finance, at the end of the 1940s, and relates to the financing of highways and the pricing of their construction and of their use. Very early in his career Buchanan adopted Knut Wicksell’s proposal to use a marginal cost (...) pricing rule even for public goods. The many criticisms raised against this rule led him to replace it with club pricing. (shrink)

At the start of the twentieth century, the first quantum revolution upset our vision of the world. New physics offered surprising realities, such as wave-particle duality, and led to major inventions: the transistor, the laser, and computer's integrated circuits. Maria Kakogianni : On dit toujours que Platon est un anti-démocrate, eh bien, je pense qu'il est avant tout un antilibéral. On fait de lui un métaphysicien idéaliste, alors que c'est un très fin stratège. Et qui dit stratège, dit bataille. Il recherche sans arrêt les coordonnées d'un nouveau type de conflit. Comment changer un régime qui fonctionne au "changement" et à la "critique" ; qui fabrique des rebels without a cause pour annuler toute possibilité de révolte logique? Alain (...) Badiou : C'est en effet une question importante et difficile. Il y a deux voies, depuis toujours. Celle des principes d'abord, qui permet de "lire" la société au rebours de sa prétention normative. Les sociétés contemporaines ne sont nullement libres, car la "liberté" individuelle qu'elles promeuvent est en réalité la "liberté" de consommer les produits, le plus souvent laids et inutiles, voire nuisibles, dont la production et la circulation enrichissent sans mesure une oligarchie très restreinte. Et cette prétendue "liberté" se paie d'inégalités monstrueuses aggravées par des crises dévastatrices. L'autre voie est la construction d'une force politique apte à tenir pour réel ce que le capitalo-parlementarisme dominant déclare impossible. Il s'agit dans ce cas d'une effectuation des principes, toujours locale, et qui demande une invention toujours renouvelée, pour que les mots d'ordre dont les masses populaires sont saisies soient en quelque sorte dictés par les gens eux-mêmes, dès lors qu'ils sont positivement touchés par les principes communistes. Since the beginning of the War on Terror, Israel has become increasingly salient to imperial strategy and ever more aggressive in its policies toward the Palestinians.
