    Early-Modern Literature on International Law and the Usus Modernus.Alain Wijffels - 1995 - Grotiana 16 (1):35-54.
A single, fairly simple proposition lies at the heart of the present contribution, viz. that the development of early-modern literature on international law should be regarded as a specific form of the early usus modernus during the second half of the sixteenth century and the first half of the seventeenth century. In Section 1 that general proposition and some of its ramifications will receive some further explanation. First, the main characteristics of usus modernus will be set out, and, subsequently, (...)

Eroticism and the loss of imagination in the modern condition.Social Sciences Prashant Mishra Humanities, Gandhinagar Indian Institute of Technology, Holds A. Master’S. Degree in English Social Sciences at the Indian Institute of Technology Gandhinagar, Latin American Literature Eroticism, Poetry Modern Fiction & Phenomenology Mysticism - forthcoming - Journal for Cultural Research:1-16.
This paper finds its origin in a debate between Georges Bataille (1897-1962) and Octavio Paz (1914-1998) on what is central to the idea of eroticism. Bataille posits that violence and transgression are fundamental to eroticism, and without prohibition, eroticism would cease to exist. Paz, however, views violence and transgression as merely intersecting with, rather than being intrinsic to, eroticism. Paz places focus on imagination, and transforms eroticism from a transgressive, to a ritualistic act. Eroticism thus functions as an intermediary, turning (...)

    Spatial Form in Modern Literature: A Reconsideration.William Holtz - 1977 - Critical Inquiry 4 (2):271-283.
One measure of the validity of [Joseph] Frank's insight is the extent to which other versions of his ideas appear in other contexts: for if "spatial form" refers to something real, it cannot have escaped notice by other readers. One thinks, for example, of Northrop Frye's description of the critic viewing all the elements of the poem as a simultaneous array before him; or of Gaston Bachelard's evocative descriptions of The Poetics of Space. Or Pound's interest in ideographic script; or (...)

Silence in Modern Literature and Philosophy: Beckett, Barthes, Nancy, Stevens.Thomas Gould - 2018 - Springer Verlag.
This book discusses the elusive centrality of silence in modern literature and philosophy, focusing on the writing and theory of Jean-Luc Nancy and Roland Barthes, the prose of Samuel Beckett, and the poetry of Wallace Stevens. It suggests that silence is best understood according to two categories: apophasis and reticence. Apophasis is associated with theology, and relates to a silence of ineffability and transcendence; reticence is associated with phenomenology, and relates to a silence of listenership and speechlessness. In (...)

The Routledge companion to music and modern literature.Rachael Durkin, Peter Dayan, Axel Englund & Katharina Clausius (eds.) - 2022 - New York: Routledge.
Modern literature has always been obsessed by music. It cannot seem to think about itself without obsessing about music. And music has returned the favour. The Routledge Companion to Music and Modern Literature addresses this relationship as a significant contribution to the burgeoning field of word and music studies. The 37 chapters within consider the partnership through four lenses-the universal, opera and literature, musical and literary forms, and popular music and literature-and touch upon diverse (...)

Variations on the ethics of mourning in modern literature in French.Carole Bourne-Taylor & Sara-Louise Cooper (eds.) - 2022 - New York: Peter Lang.
How does modern writing in French grapple with the present absence and absent presence of lost loved ones? How might it challenge and critique the relegation of certain deaths to the realm of the unmournable? What might this reveal about the role of the literary in the French and francophone world and shifting conceptions of the nation state? Essays from the Revolution to the present day explore these questions from a variety of perspectives, bringing out the ways in which (...)

Alterity and Criticism: Tracing Time in Modern Literature.D. Melaney Wiliam - 2017 - London: Rowman & Littlefield International.
"Alterity and Criticism: Retracing Time in Modern Literature" argues that the role of time in canonical literature underlies the experience of alterity and requires a new hermeneutic to clarify how the self emerges in literary texts. Romantic poetry from Goethe to Shelley and the modern prose tradition from Flaubert to Butor constitute different traditions but also indicate, on a textual basis, how alterity is crucial to reading, thus encouraging us to interpret literary texts in terms of (...)

Mega-Essay as an Integrated Format in Modern Literature.Tetiana Shevchenko, Natalia Korobkova & Mariia Sliusarenko - 2022 - Postmodern Openings 13 (3):358-371.
The article introduces the concept of mega-essay as an integrated format into literary circulation in the era of postmodernism. Its specificity is outlined in other forms of ensemble association of essay works: mega-essay as an integrated formation is a consolidated format, it differs from other forms of essay compilations with greater completeness, more thorough basis of design. It has a closed structure, because all its structural components are interconnected. They are closely related to the author's intention, outlined in the preface (...)

Costumes of the Mind: Transvestism as Metaphor in Modern Literature.Sandra M. Gilbert - 1980 - Critical Inquiry 7 (2):391-417.
There is a striking difference, however, between the ways female and male modernists define and describe literal or figurative costumes. Balancing self against mask, true garment against false costume, Yeats articulates a perception of himself and his place in society that most other male modernists share, even those who experiment more radically with costume as metaphor. But female modernists like Woolf, together with their post-modernist heirs, imagine costumes of the mind with much greater irony and ambiguity, in part because women's (...)

In Literature, Life, and Modernity Richard Eldridge focuses on the question of a reader's or a viewer's response to a literary or dramatic work in a specific historical epoch ("modernity"). That is, in contrast with many other philosophical approaches to literature, he avoids fixing attention on any putative doctrinal (moral or political or diagnostic) claims in a literary work. Thereby, and in many other admirable ways, he avoids the danger of treating literature as philosophy manqué, concedes the (...)

Resisting Enchantment, Questioning Aestheticism: Modern Chinese Literature and the Public Sphere.Sebastian Veg - 2020 - Critical Inquiry 46 (3):536-554.
If indeed aestheticization and enchantment are perennial traits of state discourses and practices in China, it is perhaps unsurprising that a countertradition in modern literature should emphasize disenchantment. Cultural productions that originate from outside the sphere of the state have often questioned its authority. Where the state seeks to enchant, literature has sometimes sought to kindle doubt, to arouse debate. Although such debates have often been curtailed or suppressed, it is worth reexamining the connections between literary production (...)
