Junzi virtues: a Confucian foundation for harmony within organizations.Robin Stanley Snell, Crystal Xinru Wu & Hong Weng Lei - 2022 - Asian Journal of Business Ethics 11 (1):183-226.
The classical literature on Confucianism exhorted leaders to practice five core virtues as the basis for becoming a noble person and for sustaining harmonious communities built on trust and good example. We present a theory about how the senior management in modern corporations, by enacting the five Junzi virtues through virtuous environmental, social, and governance policies and practices, might inspire virtue-based relationships between superiors and subordinates and between employees. We argue that if middle managers and employees observe and experience that (...)

The medical student global health experience: professionalism and ethical implications.S. Shah & T. Wu - 2008 - Journal of Medical Ethics 34 (5):375-378.
Medical student and resident participation in global health experiences (GHEs) has significantly increased over the last decade. In response to growing student interest and the proven impact of such experiences on the education and career decisions of resident physicians, many medical schools have begun to establish programmes dedicated to global health education. For the innumerable benefits of GHEs, it is important to note that medical students have the potential to do more harm than good in these settings when they exceed (...)

Simulation of Human Ear Recognition Sound Direction Based on Convolutional Neural Network.Tao Feng, Haoxuan Zhang, Tao Wu, Nan Li & Zhuhe Wang - 2020 - Journal of Intelligent Systems 30 (1):209-223.
In recent years, more and more people are applying Convolutional Neural Networks to the study of sound signals. The main reason is the translational invariance of convolution in time and space. Thereby the diversity of the sound signal can be overcome. However, in terms of sound direction recognition, there are also problems such as a microphone matrix being too large, and feature selection. This paper proposes a sound direction recognition using a simulated human head with microphones at both ears. Theoretically, (...)

Computability of measurable sets via effective topologies.Yongcheng Wu & Decheng Ding - 2006 - Archive for Mathematical Logic 45 (3):365-379.
We investigate in the frame of TTE the computability of functions of the measurable sets from an infinite computable measure space such as the measure and the four kinds of set operations. We first present a series of undecidability and incomputability results about measurable sets. Then we construct several examples of computable topological spaces from the abstract infinite computable measure space, and analyze the computability of the considered functions via respectively each of the standard representations of the computable topological spaces (...)

    Deliberative democracy and epistemic humility.Kevin Chien-Chang Wu - 2011 - Behavioral and Brain Sciences 34 (2):93-94.
Deliberative democracy is one of the best designs that could facilitate good public policy decision making and bring about epistemic good based on Mercier and Sperber's (M&S's) theory of reasoning. However, three conditions are necessary: (1) an ethic of individual epistemic humility, (2) a pragmatic deflationist definition of truth, and (3) a microscopic framing power analysis during group reasoning.

Conflicts between Chinese Traditional Ethics and Bioethics.Zhaohua Wu - 1994 - Cambridge Quarterly of Healthcare Ethics 3 (3):367.
Philosophy, including moral philosophy, is the distillation of the spirit of an era. As society and science develop, sooner or later a given philosophy will gradually change form so that the resulting metamorphosis will better meet the needs of the society at that time. Traditional Chinese ethical thought is an outcome of the Chinese closed natural economy and ancient low-level science and is suitable for traditional Chinese medicine. Its superstable structure and character, which have evolved over more than 2,000 years, (...)

The Information Role of Earnings Conference Call Tone: Evidence from Stock Price Crash Risk.Xi Fu, Xiaoxi Wu & Zhifang Zhang - 2019 - Journal of Business Ethics 173 (3):643-660.
This paper investigates whether and how the disclosure tone of earnings conference calls predicts future stock price crash risk. Using US public firms’ conference call transcripts from 2010 to 2015, we find that firms with less optimistic tone of year-end conference calls experience higher stock price crash risk in the following year. Additional analyses reveal that the predictive power of tone is more pronounced among firms with better information environment and lower managerial equity incentives, suggesting that extrinsic motivations for truthful (...)

The calculability of communicative intentions through pragmatic reasoning.Robert E. Sanders, Yaxin Wu & Joseph A. Bonito - 2013 - Pragmatics and Cognition 21 (1):1-34.
We provide conceptual and empirical support for the core tenet in pragmatic theory that speakers make their communicative intention about the pragmatic meaning of their utterances recognizable to hearers. First, we attribute skepticism about this tenet to conceptualizing communicative intentions as private cognitive states that hearers cannot reliably discern. We show it is more parsimonious to conceptualize communicative intention as arising from communally shared knowledge of discursive means to ends that is the basis for pragmatic reasoning about utterance meaning by (...)

Phonological Underspecification: An Explanation for How a Rake Can Become Awake.Alycia E. Cummings, Ying C. Wu & Diane A. Ogiela - 2021 - Frontiers in Human Neuroscience 15.
Neural markers, such as the mismatch negativity, have been used to examine the phonological underspecification of English feature contrasts using the Featurally Underspecified Lexicon model. However, neural indices have not been examined within the approximant phoneme class, even though there is evidence suggesting processing asymmetries between liquid and glide phonemes. The goal of this study was to determine whether glide phonemes elicit electrophysiological asymmetries related to [consonantal] underspecification when contrasted with liquid phonemes in adult English speakers. Specifically, /ɹɑ/ is categorized (...)

Early Influence of Emotional Scenes on the Encoding of Fearful Expressions With Different Intensities: An Event-Related Potential Study.Sutao Song, Meiyun Wu & Chunliang Feng - 2022 - Frontiers in Human Neuroscience 16.
Contextual affective information influences the processing of facial expressions at the relatively early stages of face processing, but the effect of the context on the processing of facial expressions with varying intensities remains unclear. In this study, we investigated the influence of emotional scenes on the processing of fear expressions at different levels of intensity during the early stages of facial recognition using event-related potential technology. EEG data were collected while participants performed a fearful facial expression recognition task. The results (...)

Higher chronic stress is associated with a decrease in temporal sensitivity but not in subjective duration in healthy young men.Zhuxi Yao, Jianhui Wu, Bin Zhou, Kan Zhang & Liang Zhang - 2015 - Frontiers in Psychology 6:151581.
Maintaining accurate and precise temporal perception under conditions of stress is important. Studies in animal models and clinic patients have suggested that time perception can change under chronic stress. Little is known, however, about the relationship between chronic stress and time perception in healthy individuals. Here, a sample of 62 healthy young men completed Cohen’s Perceived Stress Scale (PSS) as a measure of chronic stress levels, while time perception was measured using a temporal bisection task. This task used short (400 (...)
