Does King Xuan of Qi Feel Compassion for the Ox? A Reflection on Howard Curzer’s Interpretation of Mengzi 1A7.Xiangnong Hu - 2024 - Dao: A Journal of Comparative Philosophy 23 (4):579-602.
In one of his most recent articles, “Stingy King Meets Savvy Sage: Rethinking the Dialog between King Xuan of Qi and Mengzi,” Howard Curzer criticizes the traditional interpretations of 1A7 of the _Mengzi_ 孟子 for misinterpreting the passage as delineating how Mengzi guides King Xuan of Qi (Qi Xuan Wang 齊宣王) to extend his compassion from an ox to his subjects. According to Curzer, the passage will not make sense unless we accept that King Xuan only pretends to have felt (...)

    A new critique of Mou Zongsan’s Kantian interpretation of Mengzi’s ethics.Xiangnong Hu - 2023 - Asian Philosophy 33 (2):94-109.
The New Confucian philosopher Mou Zongsan once compared the ethics of Mengzi to that of Kant, claiming that Mengzi’s ethics shares the same fundamental features with Kant’s and can therefore be better understood through a Kantian lens. This paper aims to argue against Mou by elaborating on two important but hitherto insufficiently addressed differences between Kant’s and Mengzi’s ethics. First, the paper shows that, as opposed to what Mou suggests, passages 6A1 to 6A3 of the Mengzi demonstrate Mengzi’s adoption of (...)

The Mind Aspect of Mengzi’s Concept of Heart-Mind and Its Role in Self-Cultivation.Xiangnong Hu - forthcoming - Journal of East Asian Philosophy:1-18.
“Heart-mind” has almost become the standard English translation of Mengzi’s concept of xin 心. However, it remains largely unsettled (1) on what basis xin can be regarded as possessing a mind aspect that allows it to function as a faculty that both feels and thinks, and (2) what role this mind aspect of xin plays in Mengzi’s ethics, which revolves around character formation. This paper aims to address these two questions through a detailed analysis of the original text and a (...)

Will “Green” Parents Have “Green” Children? The Relationship Between Parents’ and Early Adolescents’ Green Consumption Values.Yanping Gong, Jian Li, Julan Xie, Long Zhang & Qiuyin Lou - 2021 - Journal of Business Ethics 179 (2):369-385.
Green consumption values have been shown to motivate consumers to engage in green consumption practices. However, surprisingly little research has examined how green consumption values develop in young people. In the current study, we employed ecological socialization theory as a framework to investigate the process by which parents’ green consumption values shape similar values in their young adolescents. In Study 1, data from 722 Chinese families that included an early adolescent showed that both mothers’ and fathers’ green consumption values were (...)

Punishment by Securities Regulators, Corporate Social Responsibility and the Cost of Debt.Guangming Gong, Xin Huang, Sirui Wu, Haowen Tian & Wanjin Li - 2020 - Journal of Business Ethics 171 (2):337-356.
This study examines whether penalties issued to Chinese listed companies by securities regulators for violations of corporate law affect the cost of debt, and the moderating role of corporate social responsibility fulfillment on this relationship. Our sample consists of firms listed on Shanghai and Shenzhen stock exchanges from 2011 to 2017 and the data are collected from the announcements of China Securities Regulatory Commission. The findings are as follows: punishment announcements by regulatory authorities increase the cost of debt; and the (...)

On the Value of Corporate Social Responsibility Disclosure: An Empirical Investigation of Corporate Bond Issues in China.Guangming Gong, Si Xu & Xun Gong - 2018 - Journal of Business Ethics 150 (1):227-258.
We provide the first comprehensive and robust evidence on the relationship between CSR disclosure quality and the costs of corporate bonds in China. We find that firms with high CSR disclosure quality are associated with lower costs of corporate bonds. Our findings are robust to endogeneity issues arising from reverse causality, omitted variable bias, and the interdependencies between price and non-price terms. The negative relationship between CSR disclosure quality and the costs of corporate bonds is stronger in weak corporate governance (...)

Ethics in the Zhuangzi: Dialogues on the State of the Field.Xiangnong Hu & Yong Huang (eds.) - 2024 - Cham: Springer.
This book delves into a broad range of hitherto unresolved issues related to Zhuangzi’s ethics, which include, but are not limited to, the fundamental question of whether Zhuangzi should be regarded as a moralist in the ordinary sense and what Zhuangzi’s views on topics such as equality, moral relativism, good life, intersubjective relations, and social harmony really are. The twelve contributors to this book deliberate on these issues in six debates centering on recent influential publications in the field. In each (...)

    (1 other version)Simulating the coevolution of compositionality and word order regularity.Tao Gong - 2011 - Interaction Studies 12 (1):63-106.
This paper proposes a coevolutionary scenario on the origins of compositionality and word order regularity in human language, and illustrates it using a multi-agent, behavioral model. The model traces a `bottom-up' process of syntactic development; artificial agents, by iterating local orders among lexical items, gradually build up basic constituent word order(s) in sentences. These results show that structural features of language (e.g. syntactic categories and word orders) could have coevolved with lexical items, as a consequence of general learning mechanisms (e.g. (...)

DGGCCM: a hybrid neural model for legal event detection.Shutao Gong & Xudong Luo - forthcoming - Artificial Intelligence and Law:1-41.
This paper introduces an advanced event detection model for legal intelligence, focusing on identifying event types in legal cases by examining trigger word candidates. It employs the DeBERTa pre-trained language model for encoding sentences into enriched word representations, supplemented by the Global Pointer neural network for initial scoring. The model further uses a graph convolutional network, conditional layer normalisation, and a convolutional neural network to extract features from these representations. A multilayer perceptron then determines the event type based on these (...)

    (1 other version)Global Justice: A Utopia and Concern of Humanitarianism.Gong Qun - 2019 - Yearbook for Eastern and Western Philosophy 2019 (4):39-54.
Global justice or the lack thereof has internal connections with global poverty. Global justice is an ideal pursuit of cosmopolitanism, which regards basic human needs as its rightful object. The right to life, from the point of view of global justice, is the most fundamental in the list of Human Rights. International anarchy and the current international economic order, however, cast a utopian shadow on the realization of this right when we consider the de facto institutions and the ostensible goal (...)

“That proves you mad, because you know it not”: impaired insight and the dilemma of governing psychiatric patients as legal subjects.Neil Gong - 2017 - Theory and Society 46 (3):201-228.
This article investigates “impaired insight,” a controversial psychiatric category describing a mad person unable to know his or her madness. Like “moral insanity” and other concepts before it, impaired insight offers a way to link the disparate logics of human responsibility in psychiatry and the law. I attribute its development to changes wrought by deinstitutionalization, the rise of antipsychotic medication, and patient incarceration in penal settings. In a system that aims to govern psychiatric patients through their freedom, the logic of (...)

Is degree abstraction a parameter or a universal? Evidence from Mandarin Chinese.Ying Gong & Elizabeth Coppock - 2024 - Natural Language Semantics 32 (2):177-230.
Mandarin Chinese, along with Japanese, Yorùbá, Mòoré, and Samoan, has been argued to lack ‘degree abstraction’, a configuration at LF involving lambda abstraction over a degree variable. These languages are claimed to have a negative setting for a hypothesized ‘Degree Abstraction Parameter’. Recent work, however, has argued for degree abstraction in Japanese and Yorùbá, and degree abstraction has been detected in a number of additional languages. Could it in fact be universal? Here, we focus on the case of Mandarin, and (...)

Benevolence ( ren) and family piety ( xiao): Analysis based on the Confucian doctrine of ren wei tian sheng(humans are born of tian).Zhichong Gong - forthcoming - Asian Philosophy:1-15.
For Confucianism nowadays, the characteristics and relationship between benevolence and filial piety are crucial topics. This paper is a discussion of the relationship between benevolence and filial piety in Confucianism from a new doctrine, i.e. the doctrine of ren wei tian sheng 人为天生 (humans are born of tian). Confucianists believed that man’s existence as a human was derived from tian. This was extended to mean that, in contrast to being born into a family, part of being ‘human’ was also given (...)

The Influence of Face on Online Purchases: Evidence From China.Gong Sun, Famei Shen & Xinyi Ma - 2021 - Frontiers in Psychology 12.
This study examines the influence of an indigenous concept – face on online purchases in China. Specifically, we test the mediating role of materialism and the moderating role of price consciousness. We conduct a survey of 315 Chinese consumers. The results demonstrate that consumers tend to make online purchases to satisfy some facets of their materialistic needs and then gain face, especially for those highly conscious of price. The current research can help both scholars and practitioners better understand Chinese consumers (...)

Embedded Metaphor and Perspective Shifting.Gong Chen & Graham Stevens - 2024 - Croatian Journal of Philosophy 24 (71):255-272.
Non-cognitivism is an approach to metaphor that denies the existence of any metaphorical meanings. A metaphor’s only meaning is its literal meaning. The interpretation of metaphor, on this approach, does not consist in metaphorical contents being communicated by being either semantically encoded or pragmatically communicated. Rather, metaphor operates in an entirely non-linguistic way that does not require the postulation of such meanings. Metaphors cause people to see connections, even to grasp new thoughts, but they do not do so by meaning (...)

Objective: This study attempted to analyze the treatment decision-making process and formation mechanism for older cancer patients within the special cultural context of Chinese medical practice. Method: A qualitative study was conducted. With the sample saturation principle, data collected by in-depth interviews with 17 family members and 12 patients were subjected to thematic analysis. The effectiveness of loss-framed versus gain-framed messages in attracting attention and influencing purchase intention among younger and older adults remains unclear. We tracked the eye movements of 92 younger (18–39 years) and 83 older adults (60–82 years) while they viewed 32 advertisements and reported their purchase intentions for each advertised product. The results showed that loss-framed (vs. gain-framed) product descriptions were associated with more attention but lower purchase intention intensity (i.e. intention magnitude), and the strength of these associations did not (...)

How is the arrival of things possible?Hua’nan Gong - 2008 - Frontiers of Philosophy in China 3 (3):389-408.
Ancient Chinese thought inquired primarily into how the achievement of things is possible rather than into what a thing as a thing is. It held that man should participate in the achieving or generation of things in order to realize his self-achievement. A thing is understood as an event. Because all things and man are united as one, it is possible for man to enter into things by tasting and feeling rather than by relying on the sense of sight. This (...)

The Lineage Theory of the Regional Variation of Individualism/Collectivism in China.Weigang Gong, Meng Zhu, Burak Gürel & Tian Xie - 2021 - Frontiers in Psychology 11.
China has undergone a rapid process of modernization since 1949. The modernization process has accelerated with the development of the market economy and rural-to-urban migration after the 1980s. Nevertheless, Chinese regions still exhibit substantial differences in terms of individualist/collectivist cultural orientations. The rice theory and the climato-economic theory have attempted to explain this variation by analyzing provincial-level data. Based on a quantitative analysis of more granular, county-level variables spanning from the early 1990s until 2010, we offer an alternative account of (...)

  50. Virtue Ethics and Modern Society—A Response to the Thesis of the Modern Predicament of Virtue Ethics.Gong Qun - 2010 - Frontiers of Philosophy in China 5 (2):255-265.
The revival of modern Western virtue ethics presents the question of whether or not virtue ethics is appropriate for modern society. Ethicists believe that virtue ethics came from traditional society, to which it conforms so well. The appearance of the market economy and a utilitarian spirit, together with society’s diversification, is a sign that modern society has arrived. This also indicates a transformation in the moral spirit. But modern society has not made virtues less important, and even as modern life (...)
