Der Philosoph Hryhorij Skovoroda zahlt zu den bedeutenden Gestalten der ukrainischen und russischen Geistesgeschichte. Sein Denken ist jedoch bisher sehr widerspruchlich interpretiert und im Grunde genommen nicht verstanden worden. Bei der Suche nach einem neuen Zugang gelingt es in dieser Studie erstmals, alle Aspekte seines Denkens schlussig in das antike Konzept der einen Weisheit zu allen Zeiten einzuordnen, welches von den Kirchenvatern im Zuge einer Vereinnahmung hellenischer, judischer und lateinischer Denk- traditionen fur das Christentum bereits praktiziert und in der Renaissance (...) programmatisch als philosophia perennis etabliert worden ist. In den fur Skovoroda wesentlichen Bereichen der Erkenntnistheorie, der Gotteslehre, der Poetik und der Ethik kann die Autorin eine koharente Lekture seiner Schriften verfolgen und im Vergleich mit zahlreichen Quellen belegen. Aus der dargelegten Verortung Skovorodas in der kultur- und religionsgeschichtlichen Tradition Europas ergeben sich daruber hinaus neue geistesgeschichtliche Aspekte fur die Zeit der Aufklarung in den Regionen des Russischen Reiches. Kant’s natural philosophy in the Metaphysical Foundations of Natural Science is heavily influenced by Newton’s Principia. However, a closer look makes it clear that Kant’s project has also been influenced by other thinkers. One of these thinkers is Leonard Euler. His work was of great influence for Kant, not only with regards to his view on space and inertia but on the relation between metaphysics and natural science in general. Even though Euler’s Physics built on Newton’s work, he differs from (...) him in fundamental regards, leading to crucial developments inside classical mechanics. Here I will discuss the influence of Euler on the work of Kant and focus on Euler’s view on the two entangled problems of inertia and space. It will become clear that both Euler and Kant went through a development concerning these fundamental notions. After shortly highlighting the differences between Kant and Newton, I shall go through the development of important parts of Euler’s natural philosophy concerning the above mentioned themes. I intend to demonstrate that he, through his refutation of Wolffianism, became an advocate for the necessity of absolute space but also denied the existence of an internal force of inertia. After that I will show how Kant’s reading of Euler lead to crucial changes of his natural philosophy in particular and his philosophical enterprise in general. I therefore analyze Kant’s revision of his theory of space and inertia in his precritical writings. Building upon that, I will show the influence of these thoughts on his Metaphysical Foundations. This volume contains hitherto unknown lectures held by the Protestant philosopher and theologian Paul Tillich (1886–1965) during the first years of his exile at several universities. The lectures are on the Philosophy of Religion (1934), Introduction into Existential Philosophy (1934) and the Doctrine of Man (1934–35). They document the difficult attempt of a German scholar to explain his thought, which was rooted in the philosophy of German idealism, to an American academic audience.

Background Treatment of chronic inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) aims to improve patients’ quality of life and the extent of treatment success is measured via patient reported outcomes (PROs). However, questionnaires used to collect PROs often include scales that are not specific to IBDs. Improving these scales requires a deeper understanding of patients’ lived experience. With this study we give first insights and develop hypotheses on how patients with IBDs experience their body and self and how they adjust their life plans (...) in the context of precision medicine (PM). The guiding question is to understand what they need to achieve a good life, while facing their disease. Methods We developed a conception of the “good life” that draws on Philippa Foot’s “naturalized” approach and distinguishes six different dimensions that are relevant for a good life. This conception guided us as we conducted 10 qualitative interviews with patients suffering from IBD who were in precision medicine clinical research settings. The interviews aimed to gain insights for answering our research question: How do body experiences affect the good life of patients with IBD? We analyzed the interviews with interpretative phenomenological analysis (IPA). Results Five group experiential themes emerged: (i) Life options and plans, (ii) other people’s responses, (iii) strategies to deal with others’ responses, (iv) perception of the body and self, and (v) perception of life as good despite suffering. We report here on three of them (i, iv and v), which are primarily relevant for evaluating the outcomes of PM care. Whereas with “life options and plans (i),” our study predominantly confirmed previous research, with “perception of the body and self (iv),” we found that some of the patients changed their relationship to their body and themselves. They perceived the body or the disease as the “other” and their self appears divorced from their own body. Although this might be an avoidance strategy patients use to assign responsibility for their condition and its “disgusting” symptoms to the “other,” it is important to include it in patient reported outcome (PRO) assessments. Conclusions We conclude with the insight that the multi-dimensional approach based on Foot’s concept of a good life is well-suited as a basis for investigating the quality of life of people with IBD. Interviews based on this concept produced results that go beyond the understanding of health-related quality of life (HRQoL). Additionally, we offer some considerations about patients’ opportunities for achieving a good life and suggestions for further developing patient reported outcome scales. (shrink)

Über Paul Tillichs Lehrtätigkeit als Professor für Philosophie und Soziologie an der Universität Frankfurt am Main (1929–1933) ist bisher wenig bekannt. Aus seinem Nachlass werden in dem neuen Editionsband die Texte folgender Vorlesungen aus den Jahren 1930 bis Anfang 1933 kritisch ediert: 1. Philosophie der Religion, 2. Entwicklung der Philosophie von der Spätantike zur Renaissance, 3. Philosophie der Klassik, 4. Geschichte der philosophischen Ethik, 5. Grundfragen der systematischen Philosophie. In seinen Vorlesungen will Tillich kein Lehrbuchwissen vermitteln, sondern nach den Aporien (...) des Lebens fragen, aus denen heraus philosophiert wurde und wird. Gegenstand des philosophischen Fragens ist für ihn unsere geschichtliche Existenz in ihrer Bedrohtheit, ihr Zerfall als Möglichkeit und ihr Aufbau als Aufgabe. Subjekt des philosophischen Fragens ist für Tillich das Wir, nicht das Ich. So setzt er sich in seinem letzten in Deutschland gehaltenen Kolleg kritisch mit Heideggers Existenzphilosophie auseinander. Tillichs radikale Frage nach unserer geschichtlichen Existenz kann als Hinführung zu seiner Religionsphilosophie und Theologie interpretiert werden. (shrink)

According to Roger Sperry, science can now bridge the gap between the cold hard facts of the sciences and humanitarian and religious values. Sperry won the Nobel Prize in 1981 for his work on the differences between the left and right halves of the brain. For the past twenty years he has been campaigning for human consciousness and values to be investigated scientificlly. This book (...) describes Sperry's work and his struggle to guide humanity beyond a world divided. terms such as consciousness, value, love and joy are scientifically meaningful, just like terms referring to brain physiology, such as neural pathways and electrical impulse. The split between mind matter, or religion, and science can be removed, says Sperry, by expanding scientific research. Now, conscious experiences must be taken into account as scientific information about the brain. Our values, beliefs and goals can directly affect our brain states and physiology. (shrink)
