In this publisher's preface to 'Beobachtungen über den Geist des Menschen und dessen Verhältniß zur Welt' - outstanding, but, despite its merits, so far almost totally unknown philosophical treatise of the late Enlightenment, published in 1790 under a pseudonym 'Andrei Peredumin Koliwanow', I show that the real author of this book was an educator Christlieb Feldstrauch (1734 - 1799).

In this paper I try to explain a strange omission in Hume’s methodological descriptions in his first Enquiry. In the course of this explanation I reveal a kind of rationalistic tendency of the latter work. It seems to contrast with “experimental method” of his early Treatise of Human Nature, but, as I show that there is no discrepancy between the actual methods of both works, I make an attempt to explain the change in Hume’s characterization of his own methods. This (...) attempt leads to the question about his interpretation of the science of human nature. I argue that his view on this science was not a constant one and that initially he identified this science with his account of passions. As this presupposes the primacy of Book 2 of his Treatise I try to find new confirmations of the old hypothesis that this Book had been written before the Book 1, dealing with understanding. Finally, I show that this discussion of Hume’s methodology may be of some interest to proponents of conceptual analysis. -/- . (shrink)

Clarification of the essence of the mental reflection of reality means to reveal its most general and yet most specific characteristics, distinguishing it from all other phenomena and properties. It will be helpful to approach the solution of this problem from two sides. In the first place, this task calls for a consideration of the initial, elementary and genetically earliest form of the reflection of reality and the circumstances under which it arises. This elementary and lowest form may be understood (...) if, pursuing the method of Marx, we regard the lowest as a "hint" of the highest, when the highest is known . In the given instance, the developed forms of the mental reflection of reality are better known to us than their initial phases. In the second place, the question of the most general features of the property of reflection is closely related to a consideration of motion as the fundamental property of matter. Only a combination of these two lines of analysis will, in our opinion, make it possible, on the one hand, to keep in view the specific features of the process of reflecting reality in cognition and, on the other, to liberate us from anthropomorphic preconceptions ascribing to the elementary form of reflection of reality the characteristics of its highest form-conscious reflection. Kant, Immanual was a German philosopher, the founder of German classical idealism, born in the city of Koenigsberg . Upon graduation from the university there , he became a private tutor. In 1755 he became privatdozent and in 1770 professor at Koenigsberg University. His development as a philosopher may be divided into two periods — the precritical , and the critical, when he undertook the criticism of reason, set forth in Kritik der reinen Vernunft , Kritik der praktischen Vernunft , (...) and Kritik der Urteilskraft. I should like to supplement somewhat the interpretation of the data presented by D.E. Furman. It seems to me that to understand current processes, we must have a clearer idea of the starting point of the present intellectual movement—the "mass atheism" of the preceding period. What was this mass atheism?

Work on the methodology of natural science involves serious difficulties over and above those encountered in any other aspect of natural science or of philosophy. Reference is to the obvious fact that in discussing methodological questions of, for example, physics, so as to be precise, it is not enough to know physics: it is also necessary to familiarize oneself with certain branches of philosophy, the history of science, and so forth. Furthermore, a professional cannot limit himself to "general familiarity" with (...) the material. He has to know the details and, if possible, the entire literature on the question under discussion. However, the volume of literature on physics has, within the memory of the author alone — that is, over approximately forty years — multiplied dozens of times. I cannot say how great has been the increase in the quantity of information on the methodology of natural science and related disciplines. But what is important is that the amount of material that has accumulated to date is enormous. Some notion of the scale of the work may be gained from the abstract journal Obshchestvennye nauki za rubezhom. Seriia 8. Naukovedenie. For example, no. 1 for 1980 contained abstracts of 72 articles and books; this amounts to over 400 titles a year . When we add to this the Soviet literature and the need to include material from many years, we arrive at a figure of four digits. Naturally, only a very small portion of the literature is made use of in any particular piece of work, but it is impossible to know beforehand which items will be specifically needed. (shrink)

The deep sociopolitical contradictions between the proletariat and the bourgeoisie, between the world of socialism and that of capitalism, find reflection in the intensive ideological struggle now under way, in the clash between socialist and bourgeois ideology. This struggle is waged over all problems of contemporary social and cultural life, of any importance whatever, that in any way affect the interests of conflicting classes and social systems.

Originally, the Church of the Caves was not a temple in the sense of an architectural building but a complex of caves. The word "church" is used here in its initial gospel sense of council, a gathering of the initiated. Thus, what we are talking about is a certain community that prefers life in a cave to a settled secular social order. A study of the symbolic aspects of the image of the cave and cave dwelling can be an interesting (...) contribution to the explication of certain essential features of Old Kievan monasticism. Man's relation to culture is not limited simply to knowing it. There are other modalities of this relationship. For one, man in some way lives in culture, he exists in it, even if for some time he does notwardrealize this. Second, he participates in one way or another in the process of forming it, he creates it. Only later does culture become an object of knowledge for him. What makes him study and understand culture if previously he had gotten along (...) without it? Why, in general, does knowledge of culture appear? It is necessary to distinguish between the history of culture, the roots of which are in the distant past, and the history of the knowledge of culture, the source of which is man's discovery of culture. Hegel's teachings on the state, law, and society constitute a philosophy of law and were developed by him as the philosophy of the objective spirit. In addition to providing a basis for historically concrete views on political matters, the Hegelian philosophy of law, as an application of dialectics to a specific realm of subject matter in societal, governmental, and political-legal phenomena, contains the logic of that realm of subject matter. The independent meaning of this domain of research transforms logic and (...) gives it politically significant features despite the conscious Hegelian attitude of "logicizing" politics. This is clearly manifested in the political and legal results of Hegel's employment of a conceptual apparatus and theoretical constructs in the dialectical investigation of the objective spirit. Therefore, it is valid to single out two aspects of the political content of Hegel's philosophy of law: the historically concrete political views developed by Hegel in his Philosophy of Right; and the totality of politically meaningful propositions deriving from his application of dialectics to the sphere of politics — which we here call Hegel's dialectics of politics. Proper interpretation of the problem of contradiction in motion has acquired pressing importance in recent years in conjunction with the development of dialectical materialist concepts of motion, space and time, continuity and discontinuity, infinity, and the like, and also in relations to problems of dialectical logic. In a number of writings , we have attempted to demonstrate that internal contradiction is inherent in motion that inseparably connected with it are such contradictory factors as variability and stability, movement and rest, with (...) variability playing the leading role. Moreover, generally speaking, the concept of preservation, stability or rest means the preservation or maintenance of the very state of motion. (shrink)

The concept of reflection has many complex aspects; it is by no means something that is self-evident in nature. The object of this article is to examine that which is specific to reflection, its fundamental aspects and characteristics, and to demonstrate, in the spectrum of these characteristics, the place of the special mathematical concept of information, which corresponds to the quantitative measure of information in the statistical theory of information . But the word "information" is employed in two other senses (...) as well. In works on the theory of automatic regulation and control one often finds the terms "ordering," "organization," and "structure" employed as a synonym for it. Finally, in scientific usage the word "information" is often employed in place of the terms "model," "image," "knowledge," and "data." Therefore, in our further presentation we shall employ, each in its place, three meanings of this word: "the mathematical concept of information," "information," and "information in the ordinary meaning of the word.". The term 'Machiavellianism', used to designate a tough politics knowing no ethical barriers, entered firmly into circulation as far back as the sixteenth century. It was the negative reaction to the maxims in The Prince that defined the initial attitude toward Machiavelli's doctrine, and the internal polemic with this initial assessment has spawned an endless stream of literature endeavoring to justify in one way or other the ill-starred secretary of the Florentine Republic. In sheer number of publications, pro-Machiavelli views exceed (...) anti-Machiavelli views by many times. And yet questions remain; the original negative reaction is not eradicated, just as the striving for apologetics is not eradicated. (shrink)
