Examining Online Social Network Use and Its Effect on the Use of Privacy Settings and Profile Disclosure.David Salb & Tziporah Stern - 2015 - Bulletin of Science, Technology and Society 35 (1-2):25-34.
Online social networks (OSN) have become a part of our daily lives whether they are used for socialization and communication or to promote business interests. OSN have become an important tool for businesses to advertise, create brand awareness, and promote their products and services. Business use of OSN for advertising purposes is highly reliant on targeted ads which display advertisements to OSN users based on their demographics and use of OSN, apps, and websites. Thus, one of the most valuable commodities (...)

(1 other version)Dynamic Oppositional Symmetries for Color, Jungian and Kantian Categories.Julio Michael Stern - 2024 - Logica Universalis 18 (1):235-282.
This paper investigates some classical oppositional categories, like synthetic versus analytic, posterior versus prior, imagination versus grammar, metaphor versus hermeneutics, metaphysics versus observation, innovation versus routine, and image versus sound, and the role they play in epistemology and philosophy of science. The epistemological framework of _objective cognitive constructivism_ is of special interest in these investigations. Oppositional relations are formally represented using algebraic lattice structures like the cube and the hexagon of opposition, with applications in the contexts of modern color theory, (...)

What Is Ethically Demanded? K. E. Løgstrup’s Philosophy of Moral Life.R. Stern & Hans Fink (eds.) - 2017 - Notre Dame, Indiana: University of Notre Dame Press.
This collection of essays by leading international philosophers considers central themes in the ethics of Danish philosopher Knud Ejler Løgstrup (1905–1981). Løgstrup was a Lutheran theologian much influenced by phenomenology and by strong currents in Danish culture, to which he himself made important contributions. The essays in What Is Ethically Demanded? K. E. Løgstrup’s Philosophy of Moral Life are divided into four sections. The first section deals predominantly with Løgstrup’s relation to Kant and, through Kant, the system of morality in (...)

    Proustian Grief.Thomas Stern - 2024 - European Journal of Philosophy:1-16.
Proust wrote vividly about grief, but he has not been recognised or studied as a philosopher of grief. It is time that he was. For a powerful and compelling philosophy of grief emerges from the pages of his magnum opus. Though philosophical work on Proust has not turned to this theory of grief, philosophers writing about grief have often drawn on Proust, both explicitly and implicitly, without an awareness of an underlying Proustian theory. This paper fills the gap by placing (...)

    Wittgenstein's Texts and Style.David G. Stern - 2017 - In Hans-Johann Glock & John Hyman (eds.), A Companion to Wittgenstein. Chichester, West Sussex, UK: Wiley-Blackwell. pp. 41–55.
Wittgenstein's principal works, the Tractatus Logico‐Philosophicus and Philosophical Investigations, are each written in such strikingly unconventional ways that it takes considerable effort to translate them into conventional philosophical writing. The most important aspect of Wittgenstein's style for an understanding of his philosophy is his use of multiple voices, and the way he forces his reader to engage with those voices in order to understand him. This chapter provides an outline of the leading macro‐level answers to the question which of Wittgenstein's (...)

The Individual as an Object of Love: The Property View of Love Meets the Hegelian View of Properties.Joe Saunders & Robert Stern - 2023 - Ergo: An Open Access Journal of Philosophy 10.
In this paper, we do two things: first, we offer a metaphysical account of what it is to be an individual person through Hegel’s understanding of the concrete universal; and second, we show how this account of an individual can help in thinking about love. The aim is to show that Hegel’s distinctive account of individuality and universality can do justice to two intuitions about love which appear to be in tension: on the one hand, that love can involve a (...)

Sequential theories and infinite distributivity in the lattice of chapters.Alan S. Stern - 1989 - Journal of Symbolic Logic 54 (1):190-206.
We introduce a notion of complexity for interpretations, which is used to prove some new results about interpretations of sequential theories. In particular, we give a new, elementary proof of Pudlák's theorem that sequential theories are connected. We also demonstrate a counterexample to the infinitary distributive law $a \vee \bigwedge_{i \in I} b_i = \bigwedge_{i \in I} (a \vee b_i)$ in the lattice of chapters, in which the chapters a and b i are compact. (Counterexamples in which a is not (...)

Linguistic Reductionism and the Idea of ‘Potential Meaning’.K. Stern - 1969 - The Monist 53 (2):246-261.
It is, by now, a common-place, to point out that contemporary philosophy under the influence of Moore and Wittgenstein is concerned with language rather than with the ‘world’ There is, no doubt, a great deal of room to niggle at this rather broad characterization of recent philosophy, but anyone familiar with recent philosophical history in Britain and America will agree that such a generalization is as true as such generalizations can be. Thus, J. J. C. Smart points out that.

    Rent Control Sharing.Stephanie M. Stern - 2019 - The Law and Ethics of Human Rights 13 (2):141-178.
Rent-control laws limiting the rents private landlords can charge tenants are controversial in the United States. Critics have condemned rent control’s mandated wealth transfer from landlords to tenants, and economists have decried its negative effects on rental supply and quality. With the advent of the sharing economy, rent-controlled tenants can rent out their below-market units for short durations at market-level or premium prices, a practice I term “rent control sharing.” The reaction to rent-controlled tenants pocketing money from Airbnb and other (...)

Reflecting on Parental Concerns in the Treatment of Pediatric Brain Tumors: Observations From A General Pediatrician.Lisa Stern - 2014 - Narrative Inquiry in Bioethics 4 (1):47-52.
This issue of Narrative Inquiry in Bioethics explores the concerns and point of view of parents who have had to confront the devastating diagnosis of a pediatric brain tumor. This commentary, written by a general pediatrician, is a synthesis of several narrative themes which touch on a range of topics from relapse to long-term sequelae and other issues that effect a growing population of pediatric brain tumor patients. It offers a glimpse into the problems that need to be addressed by (...)

Wittgenstein, Finitism, and the Foundations of Mathematics. [REVIEW]David Stern - 2001 - Dialogue 40 (3):624-625.
More than half of Wittgenstein’s writings from the years between his return to philosophy in 1929 and the completion of Part I of the Philosophical Investigations in 1945 are about issues in the philosophy of mathematics. In 1929 he wrote that “There is no religious denomination in which so much sin has been committed through the misuse of metaphorical expressions as in mathematics”. But what sins, and which misuses, was he criticizing in his writings on the philosophy of mathematics? Wittgenstein, (...)

This practical guide for teaching philosophy brings together essays by two dozen distinguished philosophers committed to pedagogy. Addressing primarily practical issues, such as how to motivate students, construct particular courses, and give educational exams, the essays also touch on theoretical issues such as whether moral edification is a proper goal of teaching ethics.
