  7. On the Truth: a Study Considering the Religious Behavior Concerning Mt. Fuji.Takakuni Hirano - 1972 - Diogenes 20 (79):109-127.
It will be interesting to listen to the personal beliefs concerning “Truth” as revealed in the studies of different scholars in different countries. But how will such a collection of beliefs contribute to the seeking of truth itself when we want to attribute to the word truth one of the adjectives: “absolute,” or “universal”?

Evolution of vertebrate adaptive immunity: Immune cells and tissues, and AID/APOBEC cytidine deaminases.Masayuki Hirano - 2015 - Bioessays 37 (8):877-887.
All surviving jawed vertebrate representatives achieve diversity in immunoglobulin‐based B and T cell receptors for antigen recognition through recombinatorial rearrangement of V(D)J segments. However, the extant jawless vertebrates, lampreys and hagfish, instead generate three types of variable lymphocyte receptors (VLRs) through a template‐mediated combinatorial assembly of different leucine‐rich repeat (LRR) sequences. The clonally diverse VLRB receptors are expressed by B‐like lymphocytes, while the VLRA and VLRC receptors are expressed by lymphocyte lineages that resemble αβ and γδ T lymphocytes, respectively. These (...)

Ethical issues in invasive mechanical ventilation for amyotrophic lateral sclerosis.Yuko Hirano & Yoshihiko Yamazaki - 2010 - Nursing Ethics 17 (1):51-63.
Currently in Japan, discontinuing an invasive mechanical ventilator (IMV) is illegal; therefore IMV-related decision making is a crucial issue. This study examined IMV decision-making factors and psychological conflict in 50 patients with amyotrophic lateral sclerosis. The Herth Hope Index was used for the assessment of pre- and post-IMV conflict. Interviews identified some decision-making factors: patient’s decision, patient’s and family’s mutual decision, family’s decision, and emergency-induced without patient’s or family’s consent. Participants who experienced no IMV-related regret received sufficient prior IMV education (...)

Politics and poetics of the body in early modern japan.Katsuya Hirano - 2011 - Modern Intellectual History 8 (3):499-530.
This essay examines the political implications of Edo (present-day Tokyo) popular culture in early modern Japan by focusing on the interface between distinct forms of literary and visual representation and the configuration of social order (the status hierarchy and the division of labor), as well as moral and ideological discourses that were conducive to the reproduction of the order. Central to the forms of representation in Edo popular culture was the overarching literary and artistic principle, which I call a phrase (...)

Telling What She Thinks: Semantics and Pragmatics of Propositional Attitude Reports.Tomoo Ueda - 2015 - De Gruyter.
This book aims at analyzing semantic values of proper names occurring in belief reports. The focus is on the discussion about Frege s puzzle concerning belief reports. The goal is to analyze Frege s puzzle without giving up semantic innocence. To this end, a pragmatic analysis named VarCA analysis is proposed.".

  50. Reason as Acquaintance with Background and the Performative Turn in Phenomenology.Tetsushi Hirano - 2016 - International Philosophical Quarterly 56 (3):337-357.
Husserl’s notion of “sense” has often been interpreted through a Fregean lens. I will show that Husserl saw it as an acquaintance with the background or horizon of perceptual objects. He understands reason (Vernunft) as prescribing rules for performance with regard to perceptual objects. Thus Husserl’s view has a wider scope of experience than Kant’s sense of it as a pre-reflective acquaintance with one’s environment. After Ideas I Husserl develops these notions as part of his theory of the intersubjective world. (...)
