    Childminder : A Study in Action Research.Brian Jackson & Sonia Jackson - 2013 - Routledge.
First published in 1979, this book looks at the subject of childminding in Britain at the time it was written. It is based on a national survey that was commissioned by the Social Science Research Council and on action to help childminders funded by the Wates Foundation at Manchester University, UK. Previous to this study it was calculated that more than one million children under the age of five had a working mother, but little research had been done into childminders (...)

Navigating Cultural Crossroads with Intersectional Narratives in Reyna Grande and Sonia Guiñansaca's Somewhere We Are Human: Authentic Voices on Migration, Survival, and New Beginnings. [REVIEW]Kevin T. Jackson - 2025 - Journal of Business Ethics 197:1-5.
The anthology Somewhere We Are Human: Authentic Voices on Migration, Survival, and New Beginnings, edited by Reyna Grande and Sonia Guiñansaca, seeks to shift the often-polarized immigration debate by focusing on concrete personal stories rather than on abstractions and stereotypes. The book shows us that migrants are not mere statistics but flesh-and-blood individuals, each harboring their own hopes, fears, and dreams. Featuring contributions ranging from essays, poetry, and artworks, the book illuminates the multifaceted experiences of people charting complexities of (...)

Centralization, Competition, and Privatization in Financial Regulation.Howell E. Jackson - 2001 - Theoretical Inquiries in Law 2 (2).
This essay reviews recent debates over the allocation of regulatory authority in three separate fields of financial regulation: corporate governance, securities regulation, and the regulation of financial institutions. In each field, the essay argues, reform proposals can be organized into three basic groups: those that advocate centralization of regulatory authority; those that favor competition among governmental bodies; and those that recommend the privatization of regulatory standards. While this debate is most familiar in the field of corporate governance, highly analogous policy (...)

There is a Mexican, as well as a Canadian version of the American Dream. What drives political idealism in Mexico is less the idea of individual right, or respect for the rights of communities, than it is the 'indigenous' right of an historically oppressed people to a political culture and life wholly their own.

Philosophy and the end of sacrifice: disengaging ritual in ancient India, Greece and beyond.Peter Jackson & Anna-Pya Sjödin (eds.) - 2016 - Bristol, CT: Equinox.
This volume addresses the means and ends of sacrificial speculation by inviting a selected group of specialists in the fields of philosophy, history of religions, and indology to examine philosophical modes of sacrificial speculation-especially in Ancient India and Greece-and consider the commonalities of their historical raison d'etre. Scholars have long observed, yet without presenting any transcultural grand theory on the matter, that sacrifice seems to end with (or even continue as) philosophy in both Ancient India and Greece. How are we (...)

Neuroticism as a covariate of cognitive task performance in individuals with tinnitus.Holly M. Edwards, James G. Jackson & Hannah Evans - 2022 - Frontiers in Psychology 13.
Previous studies have shown cognitive task performance to be affected by tinnitus severity, but also that the literature is conflicted. This study sought to identify neuroticism as a possible confound, since severe tinnitus distress is associated with higher levels of neuroticism. A total of 78 participants undertook two cognitive tasks. It was found that when undertaking a Stroop paradigm, controlling for neuroticism rendered previously significant results not significant. It was also found that neuroticism was not a significant covariate for a (...)

    Levinas and the Philosophy of Religion.Stephen Minister & Jackson Murtha - 2010 - Philosophy Compass 5 (11):1023-1033.
This article explores the significance of the work of Emmanuel Levinas for the philosophy of religion. Levinas is well‐known as the philosopher of the face of the other which provokes infinite responsibility. In his account of ethical responsibility to the other he regularly employs religious references, though rarely with extended explanations. This article considers a variety of interpretations of these religious references. Given the importance of Judaism for Levinas, we first examine whether Levinas should be understood as a philosopher or (...)

Journal of Mathematical Logic, Ahead of Print. Let [math] be an integer. We show that the set of real numbers that are Poisson generic in base [math] is [math]-complete in the Borel hierarchy of subsets of the real line. Furthermore, the set of real numbers that are Borel normal in base [math] and not Poisson generic in base [math] is complete for the class given by the differences between [math] sets. We also show that the effective versions of these results (...)

More companies are publishing environmental and social reports, but concerns remain about the extent to which these reports reflect a genuine intention of businesses to make themselves accountable for their social and environmental performance or whether they are merely a way of maintaining corporate reputation in the face of external criticism. Dialogue with stakeholders lies at the heart of Corporate Social Responsibility practice. While questionnaire surveys are a main method for consulting large stakeholder groups, little has been written about how (...)

Appropriate Training Should Turn Ethical Reasoning into Ethical Practice.Alexander T. Jackson, Mathias J. Simmons, Bradley J. Brummel & Aaron C. Entringer - 2016 - Journal of Business Ethics Education 13:373-392.
The prevalence of ethics training in organizations rose from 50% in 2003 to 76% in 2011 (Ethics Resource Center 2012). This paper reviews the current state of ethics training in organizations and proposes a new conceptual model for designing effective ethics training programs based on Rest’s (1986) model of ethical decision-making. We argue that it is not the content of ethics training that fails to produce ethical behavior; it is the method by which ethics training is delivered. Most organizations utilize (...)

For Whom Emptiness Prevails: An Analysis of the Religious Implications of Nāgārjuna's Vigrahavyāvartanī 70.Roger Jackson - 1985 - Religious Studies 21 (3):407 - 414.
He who has seen everything empty itself is close to knowing what everything is filled with. Emptiness is probably the most important philosophical and religious concept of Mahayana Buddhism. Its precise meaning has been explained differently by different schools and in different Buddhist cultures, but almost all Mahāyāna Buddhists would agree with the following characterization: Philosophically , emptiness is the term that describes the ultimate mode of existence of all phenomena, namely, as naturally ‘empty’ of enduring substance, or self-existence : (...)

In considering Van Schooten’s study of the Eric O. case (s.1), I ask whether the different approaches taken by the two different “legal institutions”—the prosecuting authorities on the one hand, the courts on the other—are reflective of different images of warfare (a semantic difference) or of the different images each group holds of its own role (a pragmatic difference). If we consider these two “legal institutions” as distinct semiotic groups (s.2), is there an inevitable “communication deficit” between them (and the (...)
