In our recent book (Abraham and Roy 2010) we have repurposed a mathematical model for the quantum vacuum as a model of consciousness. In this model, discrete space and time are derived from a discrete cellular dynamical network. As our model is essentially atomistic, we included in our book a short support chapter on atomism. In this aticle we expand on the few pages of that chapter devoted to the history of atomism, to place the current revival of atomism in (...) a larger context. (shrink)

These essays focus on and explore the idea of "radicalizing" hermeneutics, which John D. Caputo first proposed in his provocative and widely read study, Radical Hermeneutics (1987). In the wake of Derrida, the essays address the confrontation of hermeneutics and postmodernism. The contributors are from various disciplines—philosophy, literature, and science—and they make exciting and original contributions to hermeneutic work. Caputo and Martinez have coauthored an introductory piece that sets out the "very idea of radical hermeneutics," which several contributors proceed to (...) work and rework in quite original ways. Over the past few decades, autonomy has become a core value in our societies, enshrining the will of patients as a premise for access to front-line care and services. Thus, in the case of patients refusing home care, the willingness to participate in an assessment often takes precedence over the needs identified by caregivers, however compelling they may be. For the gerontopsychiatric patient, this organizational position can lead to several pitfalls, and even risky or dangerous situations. Indeed, the refusal of (...) care and services among seniors, frequently associated with self-neglecting behaviours, can lead to clinical deterioration, hospitalization or even death. It is therefore essential to examine the motivations behind the choices made by seniors and to adapt the approach of caregivers to these situations. Consent to care is a dialogical process that must include an explanation of the risks in the event of refusal. Access to care must not be automatically limited when there is the slightest opposition, without first engaging in further reflection. This article describes why concrete solutions must be actively sought to nuance the understanding and application of the values of autonomy and protection for seniors in the healthy provision of care and services, even more so for the vulnerable patient who is aging and suffering from psychic symptoms. This article is a response to the letter from the Department of Health that was published in the previous edition of the Research Ethics Review upon the matter of the legal duty of the research ethics committees. It also deals briefly with the article published in the current edition of Research Ethics Review by Colin Parker on what appears to be the same topic.

In this article, the author contends that the current indemnity provided to REC members is unfair and is so badly drafted that it cannot be described as an indemnity at all. He contends that the Appointing Authorities should give guidance to clarify the scope of the indemnity or replace it. The author discusses potential legal claims by REC members against their Appointing Authority if this is not provided. The legal liability of REC members for negligence and other claims is also (...) discussed. The author provides a solution in a simpler form of indemnity framed by reference to actual claims that can be made against a REC member. (shrink)
