The impact of ethical ideology on modifiers of ethical decisions and suggested punishment for ethical infractions.Robert A. Giacalone, Scott Fricker & Jon W. Beard - 1995 - Journal of Business Ethics 14 (7):497 - 510.
The present study sought to determine the extent to which individuals'' ethical ideologies, as measured by Forsyth''s (1980) Ethics Position Questionnaire (EPQ), impacted the degree of punishment they advocated for differing ethical infractions, as well as their selection of non-ethics related variables that might be used to modify judgments of disciplinary action. The data revealed that individual ideology does impact both advocated punishment and choice of non-ethics related variables, but only in some measures. The data are discussed in terms of (...)

Conditional coercion versus rights diagnostics.Scott Wisor - 2016 - Politics, Philosophy and Economics 15 (4):405-423.
Scholars in philosophy, political science, and the policy community have recently advocated for a ‘sticks and carrots’, or conditional-coercion, approach to human rights violations. On this model, rights violators (usually states) are conceived of as rational agents who should be rewarded for good behavior and punished for bad behavior by other states seeking to improve human rights abroad. External states concerned about human rights abroad should impose punishments against foreign rights violators, and these punitive measures should not be lifted until (...)

Cinema's bodily illusions: flying, floating, and hallucinating.Scott C. Richmond - 2016 - Minneapolis: University of Minnesota Press.
Do contemporary big-budget blockbuster films like Gravity move something in us that is fundamentally the same as what avant-garde and experimental films have done for more than a century? In a powerful challenge to mainstream film theory, Cinema's Bodily Illusions demonstrates that this is the case. Scott C. Richmond bridges genres and periods by focusing, most palpably, on cinema's power to evoke illusions: feeling like you're flying through space, experiencing 3D without glasses, or even hallucinating. He argues that cinema (...)

“And so with the moderns”: The Role of the Revolutionary Writer and the Mythicization of History in J. Leslie Mitchell’s Spartacus.Scott Lyall - 2022 - Clotho 4 (2):127-152.
The focus of this article is J. Leslie Mitchell’s Spartacus (1933), his fictional representation of the slave rebellion in ancient Rome led by the eponymous gladiator. The article begins by examining Mitchell’s contribution to debates over the role of the revolutionary writer in Left Review in the mid-1930s and his place in the British Left in this era, before going on to survey the ways in which the figure of Spartacus and the German Spartacists are represented across Mitchell’s oeuvre. It (...)

The Enigma of the Mind: The Mind-Body Problem in Contemporary Thought.Scott Staton (ed.) - 2012 - Cambridge University Press.
Sergio Moravia's The Enigma of the Mind offers a broad and lucid critical and historical survey of one of the fundamental debates in the philosophy of mind - the relationship of mind and body. This problem continues to raise deep questions concerning the nature of man. The book has two central aims. First, Professor Moravia sketches the major recent contributions to the mind/body problem from philosophers of mind. Having established this framework Professor Moravia pursues his second aim - the articulation (...)

Confronting the Contraceptive Mentality.Scott Lloyd - 2015 - The National Catholic Bioethics Quarterly 15 (3):465-475.
The statistics and studies speak clearly to a need for the pro-life movement to embrace opposition to contraception as a means of reducing our culture’s resort to abortion. What are some policies that may help us to confront the contraceptive orthodoxy in ways that are politically viable in the face of near-universal acceptance of contraception?

The Virtue of Epistemic Humility.Nancy Nyquist Potter - 2022 - Philosophy, Psychiatry, and Psychology 29 (2):121-123.
Ethics, including medical ethics, has historically paid insufficient attention to epistemic rights and wrongs. This neglect fails to recognize the ways ethics and epistemology are intertwined. In the past fifteen years or so, there has been an interest in epistemic issues in medical practices, relationships with patients, and what is called epistemic injustice. Miranda Fricker identifies a kind of epistemic wrong as an injustice and a harm because it diminishes the speaker's capacity of a knower and treats her as (...)

The philosophy of modernism: (in its connection with music).Cyril Scott - 1917 - London: Kegan Paul, Trench, Trubner & co..
Excerpt from The Philosophy of Modernism (in Its Connection With Music) The prerequisite to immortality in the world of art is the capacity to create something new, or, in other words, the capacity to invent a style. Indeed, let any one but survey the past history of music, poetry and painting, and he will notice that each great name stands for a literary or musical invention: so that to talk of Keats or Shelley, Beethoven or Wagner, is not to talk (...)

The Paterson Paradigm: Some Personal Reflections.Waldron Scott - 1991 - Transformation: An International Journal of Holistic Mission Studies 8 (4):16-22.
In the fall of 1984 my wife, Georgia, and I, moved to Paterson and founded Holistic Ministries International. Our purpose was twofold: to develop a set of ministries that would manifest, in word and deed, the good news of the Kingdom of God; and to develop a context in which prospective missionaries, from Paterson and elsewhere, might receive training relevant to 21st century mission. How this has worked out is the subject of this article.

The Psychological Subject and Harré's Social Psychology: An Analysis of a Constructionist Case.Campbell L. Scott & Henderikus J. Stam - 1996 - Journal for the Theory of Social Behaviour 26 (4):327-352.
Taking Rom Harré's social constructionism as a focus we point to and discuss the issue of the a priori psychological subject in social constructionist theory. While Harré indicates that interacting, intending beings are necessary for conversation to occur, he assumes that the primary human reality is conversation and that psychological life emerges from this social domain. Nevertheless, we argue that a fundamental and agentive psychological subject is implicit to his constructionist works. Our critical analyses focus upon Harré's understandings of persons, (...)
