Prompted by Derrida's work on the animal-fable in eighteenth-century debates about political power, this article examines the role played by the fiction of the animal in thinking of pity as either a natural virtue (in Rousseau's Second Discourse) or as a natural passion (in Mandeville's The Fable of the Bees). The war of fables between Rousseau and Mandeville – and their hostile reception by Samuel Johnson and Adam Smith – reinforce that the animal-fable illustrates not so much the proper (...) of man as the possibilities and limitations of a moral philosophy that is unable to address the political realities of the state. This book examines the evidential status and use of linguistic intuitions, a topic that has seen increased interest in recent years. Linguists use native speakers' intuitions - such as whether or not an utterance sounds acceptable - as evidence for theories about language, but this approach is not uncontroversial. The two parts of this volume draw on the most recent work in both philosophy and linguistics to explore the two major issues at the heart of the debate. Chapters in the (...) first part address the 'justification question', critically analysing and evaluating the theoretical rationale for the evidential use of linguistic intuitions. John Locke’s views on the nature of freedom of action and freedom of will have played an influential role in the philosophy of action and in moral psychology. Locke offers distinctive accounts of action and forbearance, of will and willing, of voluntary (as opposed to involuntary) actions and forbearances, and of freedom (as opposed to necessity). These positions lead him to dismiss the traditional question of free will as absurd, but also raise new questions, such as whether we are (or (...) can be) free in respect of willing and whether we are free to will what we will, questions to which he gives divergent answers. Locke also discusses the (much misunderstood) question of what determines the will, providing one answer to it at one time, and then changing his mind upon consideration of some constructive criticism proposed by his friend, William Molyneux. In conjunction with this change of mind, Locke introduces a new doctrine (concerning the ability to suspend the fulfillment of one’s desires) that has caused much consternation among his interpreters, in part because it threatens incoherence. As we will see, Locke’s initial views do suffer from clear difficulties that are remedied by his later change of mind, all without introducing incoherence. (shrink)

In a recent attempt to update the 1948 World Health Organization definition of health as a state of complete well-being and absence of disease, it has now been proposed to change its emphasis to the ability to adapt and self manage in the face of social, physical and emotional challenges. The question how we should conceptualize such self-management, however, is rarely raised and its theoretical foundations remain largely unexplained. The distinction that De Haan and Korsten foreground in their valuable commentary between, on the one hand, medical files, and, on the other, illness records is very helpful, as it underlines that illness narratives are not bound to a specific truth regime. They operate in, and at times even across, a variety of truth regimes, within which their status and function can radically differ. El objetivo de este trabajo es dar cuenta de la fecundidad que el pensamiento de Unamuno (1864-1936) presenta en torno al problema hermenéutico. Para ello se tomará como eje la obra Cómo se hace una novela (1926-7), donde el pensador bilbaíno expone sus ideas en torno a la cuestión de la escritura y la recepción de la obra literaria. El estudio de la obra en cuestión y la referencia a muchas de sus otras obras estará atravesado por las nociones que (...) acuñara Ricoeur de “distanciamiento” y “apropiación” del mundo del texto . La importancia que cobra en Unamuno el receptor de la obra, anticipándose a las ulteriores teorías de la recepción, nos lleva a ver qué entiende éste por “comprensión”, y cuál es el papel que esa noción juega en sus concepciones filosófico-literarias. Finalmente, a partir de este “distanciamiento” y “apropiación” de la obra que propone Unamuno al lector, le será posible al receptor, la proyección de un mundo. (shrink)

ResumenEn este trabajo queremos indagar sobre algunas cuestiones epistemológicas que se discuten en torno al fenómeno del big data. Como principal herramienta de análisis epistemológico utilizamos a la noción de Marco Epistémico formulada por Piaget y García, y revisada por nosotros en trabajos más recientes, para problematizar los condicionamientos de los valores éticos y políticos, así como de otras regulaciones, en el desarrollo del conocimiento científico. Para ello, proponemos ordenar los debates que se registran en la literatura reciente sobre big (...) data a través de diversas dualidades, tales como dato/interpretación, automático/no-automático o causalidad/correlación, en torno a las cuales vamos a argumentar que es posible pensar dos marcos epistémicos específicos tendientes a la escisión de estos términos o a su integración. Abogando por esta última manera de focalizar los debates, hacia el final del trabajo identificamos algunos desafíos epistemológicos de la investigación con big data, especialmente en las ciencias sociales computacionales.Palabras clave: big data; marco epistémico; constructivismo; computación. Este trabajo tiene como objetivo presentar la concepción ampliada de texto que desarrolla Unamuno en su epistemología de las ciencias humanas y sociales. Este sentido amplio del texto le permite ensanchar el horizonte de los medios expresivos para indagar en la historia y dar con el ser español. En primer lugar, señalo brevemente los antecedentes y estudios que permiten situar la epistemología unamuniana en el marco del paradigma hermenéutico. En segundo lugar, desarrollo las críticas de Unamuno a la primacía de (...) la reflexividad en torno al problema del conocimiento. Ello le permite a Unamuno indagar en otros modelos cognoscitivos que reconozcan la pertenecía eludida por la tesis cartesiana pero, al mismo tiempo, asuman el distanciamiento propio del conocimiento científico. En tercer lugar, desarrollo tres instancias del conocimiento por medio del lenguaje: la lengua hablada, la palabra escrita y el texto en un sentido ampliado como fundamento epistémico. Este último constituye para Unamuno el recurso idóneo para la indagación histórico-social. Finalmente, esta concepción de la textualidad le permite a Unamuno señalar que esta se constituye en la materia prima para las humanidades y ciencias sociales. (shrink)

Partiendo de la actual crisis democrática y una de sus tantas manifestaciones, este artículo explora los conceptos de tertium datur (Echeverría) y dissimulazione onesta (Accetto) desde la lógica agonista (Unamuno/Mouffe) y el artificio barroco (Gracián) con el objetivo de cuestionar la lógica injusta que sostiene nuestro mundo y vislumbrar una alternativa contra-hegemónica de acción frente al uniformismo (Badiou) actual de la política occidental. La hipótesis del artículo sostiene que la puesta en práctica de la lógica de tertium datur, con su (...) forma honesta de disimulación, es una alternativa que, ampliamente difundida en el Barroco hispanoamericano, podría ser reconsiderada como una forma de combatir la situación actual. Scholars disagree about the nature of the doctrinal apparatus that supports Berkeley’s case for passive obedience to the sovereign. Is he a rule-utilitarian, or natural law theorist, or ethical egoist, or some combination of some or all these elements? Here I argue that Berkeley is an act-utilitarian who thinks that one is more likely to act rightly by following certain sorts of rules. I also argue that Berkeley mischaracterizes and misevaluates Locke’s version of the social contract theory. Finally, I consider (...) the potentially practically self-defeating nature of Berkeley’s claim that there is no obligation to submit to the rule of “madmen” or “usurpers.”. (shrink)

This article argues that an engagement with the powerful critical insights of Žižek’s theory of ideology and practice of cultural critique is a necessary step for any art historical methodology which aims to fully account for a work of art’s function within the society of its creation and reception, and to explain how it came to play such a role. However, any attempt to situate cultural artefacts within historically contingent networks of social relations requires an account of historical change incompatible (...) with any formalist or transcendentalist methodology. Moreover, if it is to be of any use as an academic discourse, art history must be able to account for the specifities of ‘art’ as a distinct—but not autonomous—sphere of human activity. It is precisely these two issues that a wholesale importation of Žižek’s writing into the domain of art history encounters. A solution must be found whereby the critical lessons of Žižek are not ‘lost in translation’. In this vein, the present article begins by outlining Žižek’s conception of ideology and elucidating the problematic consequences of any straightforward application of its parameters as an art historical methodology. It then reads the interventions of Jacques Rancière and Judith Butler as providing the necessary theoretical tools by which one can construct the possibility of a powerful Žižekian art historical methodology.
