Pathological morphogenesis on leaves of Fraxinus ornus (ash) and Solanum lycopersicum (tomato) under the influence of mites (Aceria fraxinivora and Eriophyes cladophthirus respectively) leads to a range of structures whose morphology and development cannot be reduced to the classical categories of plant morphology, but present a heterogeneous continuum which links fundamental structural categories. These findings support the pyramid model of plant construction.

Körner's notion of vagueness, its relation to ostension and the alledged gulf between logic and experience are examined. Ostension is seen not to cause vagueness ~ there are precise concepts of mathematics which can be ostensively introduced. A distinction is drawn between classical logic not applying to the vague world and not applying to the vague language. The claims about logic and the vague world are unverifiable claims about existence. Körner's attempt to elimmate the seeming incompatibility between vague language and (...) logic leads to a Protagorean relativism which is rejected. It is denied that the incompatibility between vagueness and classical logic causes a gulf between two sublanguages; instead, ordinary language is held to contain both and so to be inconsistent. Which theories of Leibniz are still valid after post-modern critique? Using various methods, this work considers a new interpretation and views Leibniz's work from a different perspective. As such, the authors reconstruct Leibniz's viewpoints on tolerance and truth in light of his position and the influence of church politics. Furthermore, his strategy of differentiation between animal and human will be analyzed on its usefulness to current debate. Leibniz's theory of perception will also be contrasted to comparable theories of today. Based on the premise that what is relevant, consistent, or true may change from context to context, a formal framework of relevance and context is proposed in which • contexts are mathematical entities • each context has its own language with relevant implication • the languages of distinct contexts are connected by embeddings • inter-context deduction is supported by bridge rules • databases are sets of formulae tagged with deductive histories and the contexts they belong to • abduction and revision (...) are supported by a notion of consistency of formulae and sets of formulae which are relative to a context, and which can, in turn, be seen as constituents of agendas. This book examines the presence of idealism in modern philosophy from the seventeenth century to the turn of the twenty-first. We define idealism proper as the position that reality is ultimately mental or conceptual in nature, to be contrasted to materialism or physicalism. So defined, idealism has hardly been a popular view, at least in the twentieth century. But we distinguish between metaphysical and epistemological arguments for idealism, and argue that while the former have rarely been popular, the latter are (...) so, and present in many philosophers who would hardly call themselves idealists. We conclude that metaphysical arguments in favor of a reduction of all reality to either mind or matter are highly questionable, because we have no reason to believe that we have arrived at an adequate understanding of either. However, epistemological arguments in favor of idealism that point to some version of conceptual idealism or other are indeed difficult to avoid. (shrink)

The cytoplasmic domain of the cell adhesion molecule uvomorulin associates with three independent proteins, named catenins, which are structurally related in different cell types of various species. This complex formation connects uvnomorulin and cytoskeletal structures and might, moreover, be involved in other adhesion‐dependent mechanisms.

The paper attempts to propound a new understanding of the experience of the world and others on the basis of a radical phenomenology of the body, as it is revealed in the originary impressibility as affect and desire. This impressibility shapes every relation to beings and others due to the unity of an originary life that founds individuation before any temporal difference, having ethical consequences for a plural communality, which can no longer be characterized by means of mere abstract processes (...) of objectivation. Als Reaktion auf den Funktionalismus ergab sich in der postmodernen Architektur eine Doppelcodierung von Einfachheit und Komplexität sowie Tradition und Innovation. Damit konnte der Primat von Gebrauch und Nützlichkeit in der Städteplanung durchbrochen werden, aber die postmodernen Verwirklichungen blieben oft Einzelverwirklichungen, ohne das Erbe der alten ›europäischen Stadt‹ als Differenz und Einheit effektiv aufzugreifen. Teilweise wurden organische Verbindungen von Umgebung und Wohnnotwendigkeit berücksichtigt, und auch das Ornament gewann wieder als Zitat oder spielerische Ironie der Stile an Bedeutung. Bis heute scheint (...) jedoch eine radikal phänomenologische Berücksichtigung des Bezuges zwischen Leiblichkeit und Architektur zu fehlen. Denn der bebaute Wohnraum ist nicht nur der affektiv-leibliche Raum der Bedürfnisse und Imagination der Menschen, sondern schlechthin die Weise seiner Kosmoseinverwurzelung. Da die großen ›Metaerzählungen‹ nicht mehr als Sinngebung von Einheit seit der Postmoderne herangezogen werden können, bleibt nur die unmittelbar subjektive Leiblichkeit mit ihren Selbst- und Weltbezügen, um eine erneute sinnlich-ästhetische Einheit ohne ideologischen Allgemeinheitsanspruch stiften zu können. Diese ebenso individuell wie gesamtkulturell zentrale Frage zu unterstützen, dürfte die aktuelle Aufgabe der Baukunst sein. As a reaction against functionalism, postmodern architecture developed a twofold codification using both simplicity and complexity as well as tradition and innovation. Thus, the primacy of use and utility was effectively undermined in urban planning. However, postmodern achievements often remained isolated performances that failed to actively take over the heritage of the ›European city‹ as difference and unity. The organic unity of the environment with housing needs was partially taken into account, as was the ornament taken as a form of quotation or as playful irony referring to styles. A radical phenomenological account of corporeality (›Leiblichkeit‹) and architecture, however, is still lacking today. Housing space, indeed, is not only the affective-corporeal space pertaining to human needs and imagination, but also the way through which the human is rooted in the cosmos. Since the rise of post-modernity the great ›meta-narratives‹ have become unable to provide meaning to such unity. Therefore, the task of producing a new sensitive-aesthetic unity without recourse to the generalizations of ideology, can only be accomplished by referring to immediate subjective corporeality in its relation to self and world. To support this both individually and culturally relevant research could very well be the task of contemporary architecture. (shrink)

Die Kultur ist nicht nur das Hervorbringen von Werken, sondern ursprünglich-phänomenologisch die Selbststeigerung des Lebens. Im Bedürfen empfängt die absolute Subjektivität des Menschen dieses Leben und will es in allem wiedererkennen, was besonders auch für die Ökonomie maßgeblich ist. In Abhebung von hermeneutischen, historischen, soziologischen oder "postmodernen" Sichtweisen der Kultur wird so ein originaler Beitrag zur "Interkulturalität" und "Wirtschaftskultur" geleistet.
