As public concern over governmental inaction on climate change grows, it becomes vital to answer the Question of Legitimate Means: what actions can political actors legitimately take to pursue their goals? This paper argues that a particular understanding of the political realm, which I will call the spectator’s view on politics, prevents theorists from confronting this question. Using the philosophy of Noortje Marres, I will demonstrate that the spectator’s view posits a transcendental goal to politics, subordinating any means to the (...) realization of this goal. I will then contrast this view with the political philosophy of John Dewey. Dewey’s approach not only makes it possible to answer the Question of Legitimate Means, but highlights its importance to any democratic project. (shrink)

In view of a better comprehension of the current bad situation of the municipal finances, the evolution of the expenses of the Belgian municipalities has been investigated. Although the attention is focussed on a descriptive analysis, some explanatory indications are also given by analysing the expenses in functionof the number of inhabitants and of the geographical situation. Special attention was given to the evaluation of the potential inffoence of the amalgamation of the municipalities, which in 1976 reduced their number from (...) 2 359 to 596.The global municipal expenses have increased by circa 25 %. The pattern of expenditures remained fairly stable. There was a positive - although not rectilinear, and important exceptions exist - correlation between the population number and the level of expenses. The number of inhabitants also infiuences the destination of the revenues in a significantway. The amalgamation process seems to have only an indirect repercussion on the expenses, particularly by the change in the spreading of the municipalities over the different categories.Especially the remarkable and relevant inter-regional differentiation of the expenses - W alloon municipalities spend more money per inhabitant and following other priorities - needs further research. This paper uses basic concepts from sociological process theory to assess new forms of public management in innovation policy and their relevance to business strategy. We describe this policy process as chains of events, outcomes, and re-coupling. It is argued that these process sequences occur in three analytically separate domains, namely the social, the cultural, and the cognitive domain. The paper identifies three collective learning variables of cooperation, collectivity, and content, to arrive at an explanatory scheme to systematically investigate business (...) strategy in complex process dynamics. Hij was verbonden aan de Vakgroep grondslagen en geschiedenis van het recht van de Universiteit Gent en speelde decennia lang als publieke intellectueel en ethicus een belangrijke rol in maatschappelijke en ethische debatten in Vlaanderen, België, Nederland, maar ook daarbuiten. In dit boek is een brede selectie van ingeleide teksten van hem opgenomen. Het verschijnt parallel met een (dubbel)nummer van het tijdschrift 'Ethiek en Maatschappij' - een tijdschrift door Koen Raes in 1998 opgericht (...) en waarvan hij tot recent ook de gedreven hoofdredacteur van was. Uit de hier door Gily Coene verzamelde teksten en uit de inleidingen erop blijkt overduidelijk hoe scherp en helder Koen Raes complexe maatschappelijk-ethische problemen en thema's in kaart kon brengen en hier een gefundeerde positie over kon ontwikkelen. In this study the influence of irrational beliefs and perfectionism on the emergence of competitive anxiety was investigated. While previous studies indicate that higher irrational beliefs predict greater competitive anxiety, in the present study it is hypothesized that this relationship is mediated by perfectionism. A serial atemporal multiple mediation analysis revealed that both adaptive and maladaptive perfectionism were significant partial mediators between irrational beliefs and competitive anxiety. The total score and all four subscale scores on irrational beliefs had both direct (...) and indirect effects on cognitive competitive anxiety, the latter effects mediated by both forms of perfectionism. Depreciation beliefs had a direct effect, and demandingness and awfulizing had indirect effects, on somatic competitive anxiety when both forms of perfectionism were entered as mediators. These findings suggest that both irrational beliefs and perfectionism influence the emergence of competitive anxiety, therefore rational emotive behavioral therapy with a focus upon perfectionism may be an effective means of reducing competitive anxiety in athletes. The benefit corporation is a new (...) legal form of business that requires a corporate purpose dedicated to “general public benefit” and the delivery of demonstrable “material positive impact on society and the environment.” Novel fiduciary and reporting requirements differentiate the benefit corporation from the traditional corporation founded on shareholder primacy. Coen Gilbert explains how the benefit corporation is better suited to create long-term shareholder value as well as sustainable value for society, the environment, and other stakeholders. Heidegger holds that our age is dominated by the ambition of reason to possess the world. And he sees in Leibniz the man who formulated the theorem of our modern age: nothing happens without a reason. He calls this attitude `calculating thought' and opposes to it a kind of thought aimed at preserving the essence of things, which he calls `meditating thought'. Cristin's book ascribes great importance to this polarity of thinking for the future of contemporary philosophy, and thus compares (...) the basic ideas of the two thinkers. Leibniz announces the conquest of reason; Heidegger denounces the dangers of reason. Their diversity becomes manifest in the difference between the idea of reason and the image of the path. But is Leibniz's thought really only `calculating'? And do we not perhaps also encounter the traces of reason along Heidegger's path? With these questions in mind we may begin to redefine the relation between the two thinkers and between two different conceptions of reason and philosophy. The hypothesis is advanced that Heidegger's harsh judgment of Leibniz may be mitigated, but it also becomes clear that Heidegger's rewriting of the code of reason is an integral part of our age, in which many signs point to new loci of rationality. With his original interpretation, aware of the risks he is taking, Renato Cristin offers a new guide to the understanding of reason: he shows forth Leibniz as one who defends the thought of being in the unity of monadology, and Heidegger as a thinker who preserves the sign of reason in his meditating thought. The contemporary theological discourse is still understood as something restricted to the ecclesiastical and clerical ambit. Nevertheless, the theologian's task to use new languages to reach new fields and ease the dialogue still remains. It is observed as even more complex in a plural scene as the present days. For this reason, the narrative, as a theological language, presents a reading key to Christology, used by the contemporary french theologian, Joseph Moingt. A Fórmula Porchat — ou seja, a intuição de um conflito das filosofias de caráter indecidível – possui papel tanto propedêutico quanto compulsório para um tratamento não dogmático da história dos sistemas filosóficos. Ao mesmo tempo em que reconhece tal papel, o presente artigo pretende indicar o caráter problemático da correspondência entre “conflito das filosofias” e “indecidibilidade filosófica”. Para tal, sustenta que o sentimento de indecidibilidade filosófica tem como referência impensada uma nostalgia da decidibilidade. O artigo sugere, ainda, o abandono (...) do tema da indecidibilidade, como um falso problema filosófico, e sustenta a necessidade de considerar os efeitos da prática filosófica sobre a configuração da vida comum e de tomar tais efeitos como formas de decidibilidade. Para tal é necessário considerar a atividade filosófica como inscrita no campo maior da manufatura da experiência humana. (shrink)

Resumo: As reflexões desenvolvidas ao longo do presente artigo se apresentam como desdobramento do texto3 de Alfredo Pereira Jr., mais especificamente sobre a noção de Eu sentiente e do conceito de “projeção”, desde a psicanálise freudiana. Num primeiro momento, analisa-se de que forma Merleau-Ponty, em contraste com as filosofias empirista e racionalista, reformula a noção da subjetividade, num plano fenomenológico e ontológico. O Eu se define não mais por uma sorte de pensamento, ou por uma causalidade de leis físicas e (...) químicas, mas pelo entrelaçamento na carnalidade do mundo. Em seguida, investiga-se a noção de projeção em Freud, a fim de evidenciar como tal conceito ocupa a função de “proteção” para o Eu. A projeção limita o “lugar” necessário para que o Eu possa se desenvolver, conforme mecanismo de defesa. Por fim, sustenta-se que a noção de Eu merleau-pontyano e a projeção freudiana convergem, na medida em que ambas só podem ser pensadas como experiências dentro de um mundo de relações que ocorrem por uma dimensão inconsciente, aproximando-se, assim, com a proposta de Pereira Jr..: This article takes as its starting point a text by Alfredo Pereira Jr. which discusses Merleau-Ponty’s notion of the sentient Self and the concept of “projection” in Freudian psychoanalysis. First we analyze how Merleau-Ponty, in contrast to empiricist and rationalist philosophies, reformulates the notion of subjectivity on a phenomenological and ontological plane. The Self is no longer defined by a kind of thought or by the causality of physical and chemical laws, but by its entanglement in the carnality of the world. Second, the notion of projection in Freud is investigated in order to show how this concept occupies the function of “protection” for the Self. Projection limits the necessary “place” for the Self to develop. Finally, it is argued that Freud’s concept of projection and Merleau-Ponty’s notion of the Self converge, since both can only be thought of as experiences within a world of relations that occur in an unconscious dimension; it is in this sense that our proposal is similar to that of Pereira Jr. (shrink)

Para compreender a trajetória da elaboração heideggeriana do conceito de tempo é fundamental analisar a conferência O conceito de tempo (Der Begriff der Zeit). Entendemos que, embora o tempo seja tematizado em vários outros textos da juventude ou mesmo em obras heideggerianas mais tardias, é visível nesta conferência de 1924 a preocupação do pensador em conceber, de uma maneira tematicamente explícita, um novo conceito de tempo. Nossa proposta inicial restringe-se, por um lado, em avistar e evidenciar as ideias condutoras da (...) elaboração heideggeriana do conceito de tempo, razão pela qual muitos temas conexos não poderão ser especificamente abordados neste artigo; por outro lado, temos a preocupação de apontar para uma série de estudos voltados particularmente para este texto fundamental dos caminhos trilhados por Heidegger entre 1915 e 1930. "A Course on Aesthetics" offers a broad perspective of current scholarship in aesthetics without favouring any one particular school, discipline, or ideology. Written in an elegant and clear style, Barilli's text explores the basic inherent structures of human thought about the classification and evaluation of the arts. Barilli avoids any binding or dogmatic conclusions about artistic assessment in his consideration of both historical and more current art forms such as video and performance art. In doing so, he presents a contemporary (...) account of a scholarly concern. In "A Course on Aesthetics", Barilli examines the aesthetic experience in general, the passage from aesthetics to art, the "user" of art, and the critic. In his brilliant analyses of the phenomenology of various forms of art - from literature to music, from painting to art, from theatre to television - he discusses the relationship between representation and expression, touching on many of the major questions debated in contemporary criticism. A bibliography provides direction for further study of the history of aesthetics as a discipline. Renato Barilli has published numerous books in Italian on poetics, cultural theory, and contemporary art, including "Culturologia e Fenomenologia Degli Stili", L'Arte Contemporanea", and "Il Ciclo Del Postmoderno". In The Science of Culture and the Phenomenology of Styles, Renato Barilli examines the history of artistic style in relation to scientific discovery. Applying an innovative analysis, he illustrates the subtle, yet intrinsic, connection between paradigm shifts in the sciences and in the arts. Barilli argues that there are "homologies," or equivalences, between specific discoveries or inventions and revolutionary advances in artistic techniques. He draws upon the pioneering work of Lucien Goldman, who provides the fundamental definition of "homology," as (...) well as the theories of Luciano Anceschi and Marshall McLuhan in order to reassess conventional modes of dividing art history into such periods as modern, contemporary, and postmodern. By correlating moments like the invention of the printing press and the internal combustion engine with canonical periods in the evolution of art, Barilli unearths conceptual links across domains and disciplines. An insightful reflection on the historic perspectives of cultural production, The Science of Culture and the Phenomenology of Styles sheds new light on the relationship between visual culture, art, and language. The aims of the present paper is to analyse the specific visual regime of some never-before-exhibited photographs displayed at the photographic exhibition organised for the 60th anniversary of the Liberation of Mauthausen camp in 2005. I will proceed accordingly to a three steps process. First of all, I will try to show how photographs can be considered as a form of writing, namely a “light writing”. I will then provide a general overview of the catalogue of the exhibition but through (...) a decomposition and reassembly of the photographic images, trying to work for a decentralization of the gaze beyond the documentary value of these photographs. Finally, I will draw some conclusions, proposing further reflections on photography as “trace” and “supplement” of the visible. (shrink)

Neste artigo, investigamos que tipo de noção de causa precisa ser pressuposta por Russell (1921; 1927) na defesa da teoria causal da percepção. Um dos propósitos da teoria causal é fornecer uma fundamentação epistemologicamente satisfatória para o conhecimento científico. Entretanto, não está claro que a definição de causa como regularidade sequencial – proposta por Russell em 1912 – atenda aos requisitos dessa teoria. A partir de algumas objeções levantadas por Eames (1989), que identifica uma circularidade viciosa no argumento de Russell (...) em favor da teoria causal, sustentamos que a noção de causa requer uma caracterização ontologicamente mais robusta. Nesse sentido, sugerimos que o argumento de Russell acerca da teoria causal se beneficiaria de uma noção de causa análoga àquela proposta pelo realismo de capacidades de Cartwright (1989; 1999). Basicamente, atribuir uma capacidade a um objeto equivale a afirmar que ele possui uma tendência estável para causar determinados efeitos nas circunstâncias apropriadas. Apesar de metafisicamente robusta, a noção de capacidade proposta por Cartwright é compatível com uma interpretação empirista da ciência. Argumentamos que a aproximação entre a teoria causal da percepção e o realismo de capacidades indica que a teoria causal possui certa independência com relação aos demais pressupostos assumidos pelo realista estrutural epistêmico.
