Dans sa dimension scientifique, elle a réalisé une remarquable percée dans l’explication des phénomènes politiques, moraux et religieux. Elle a montré que la souveraineté du peuple dans une démocratie représentative n’a rien d’utopique, mais aussi que les démocraties représentatives sont menacées par une dérive oligarchique, et expliqué pourquoi la France l’est davantage que ses voisines. Elle a enrichi la réflexion philosophique sur le sens (...) moral et permis d’expliquer les changements tendanciels de la sensibilité morale. Elle a proposé une explication des croyances religieuses et une vision des relations entre religion et modernité qui contraste avec celle de la philosophie des Lumières. As a professional philosopher, now well past his allotted years of three-score-and-ten, I am often asked for words of wisdom about the meaning of life. Yet no sooner do I begin to answer, than I'm asked further questions--questions about God, immortality and free will. Not surprising, really, since each of these bears upon our conception of reality and of our own status and significance within it.

International problems are not reducible to economic and social conjuncture. Thucydides therefore focuses on events, particular human acts performed freely-chosen, and thus themselves irreducible to junctures of forces. No twentieth-century Thucydides could exist; no intelligible account of the wars of the present century could omit references to actors, but they would not be of central interpretative importance. Modern events are disindividualized, modern collective decisions numerous and complex. Thucydides nevertheless remains significant today to those unwilling to view events divorced from the (...) action of individuals. As an historian Thucydides experienced a feeling of destiny looking back upon free actions, but still held that they alone merit attention. (shrink)

Should blood be bought and sold is in crude terms the question asked and answered by Richard Titmuss in his recent book The Gift Relationship. Dr Raymond Plant, a lecturer in philosophy at Manchester University, analyses Titmuss' arguments in a paper which we are printing in two parts. Titmuss has taken the provision of blood as his example of the gift relationship--and by extension that of health care generally. Dr Plant considers in turn each of Titmuss' arguments that blood (...) should not be a marketable commodity, the moral objections to which seem to be the erosion of freedom and of truth telling, the separation of society through the cash nexus, and its converse that the provision of health care is a means for the integration of society. Dr Plant also examines the views of other commentators on the Titmuss' theory of the value of a 'free' blood transfusion service and other medical care as a means of integration in society, and ends with his promise that in the second part of his paper he will examine Titmuss' principles not in terms of the market but rather as related to the principle of social justice. Let $f:D\rightarrow \mathbb {C}$ be a function definable in $(\overline {\mathbb {R}},\wp |_I)$. We show that if f is holomorphic on D then f is definable in $\overline {\mathbb {R}}$. The proof of (...) this result is an adaptation of the proof of Bianconi for the $\mathbb {R}_{\exp }$ case. We also give a characterization of lattices with complex multiplication in terms of definability and a nondefinability result for the modular j-function using similar methods. (shrink)

Philosophy, for some reason, has proven the exception. Hospitalityis missing from just about any philosopher’s list of virtues. Few discussions of ethics pay attention to it. This essay explores why hospitality has been so prominent in literature but ignored in philosophy. What (...) Santayana called the “sedentary city mind,” typical of Modern thought, which replaced the medieval “pilgrim mind,”is seen as a key move leading philosophers to marginalize hospitality.
