Carnap's ideal of explication has become a key concept in analytic philosophy and the basis of a method of analysis which may be considered as an alternative to various forms of naturalism, including Quine's conception of a naturalized epistemology. More recently, new light has been shed on this aspect of the classical Carnap-Quine debate by contemporary philosophers. Whereas Michael Friedman articulated a notion of relativized a priori which owes much to Carnap's internal/external distinction, André Carus attempted to restate Carnap's ideal (...) of explication in a way that bridges the gap between conceptual engineering and naturalism. On the other hand, Mark Wilson argued that concepts develop in unpredictable ways and cannot be planned in the way classical analytic philosophy has assumed from Frege and Russell onwards. Celle-ci doit entrer dans la forme de celle-là, avec un sujet ou un substantif, un verbe ou une action, un prédicat ou un attribut. Une telle mise en forme élimine forcément un chaos, une indétermination ou un flou constitutifs de la réalité. Depuis Aristote, on entend par catégories des concepts très généraux, dont la généralité ne dérive pas de l’expérience, mais en quelque sorte la précède, puisque c’est eux et eux seuls qui nous permettent de l’organiser et de la penser. Ces concepts – substance, quantité, relation, qualité, lieu, temps, action, passion, situation, avoir – sont-ils des structures universelles de toute pensée ou bien sont-ils liés aux particularités sémantiques ou syntaxiques d’un système linguistique particulier, en l’occurrence de la langue grecque, à l’intérieur (...) de laquelle ils ont été pour la première fois énoncés et rassemblés?Les études ici réunies, issues d’un séminaire qui s’est poursuivi durant plusieurs années au Centre de recherche sur la Pensée antique de l’Université de Paris-Sorbonne, associé au C.N.R.S. , s’efforcent d’apporter des éléments de réponse à cette grande question, qui demeure au centre des discussions contemporaines sur les rapports de la philosophie et du langage. Leur apport spécifique consiste dans une exégèse rigoureuse des analyses du traité aristotélicien des Catégories, éclairé par les développements ultérieurs de la doctrine, tels que nous les connaissons notamment à travers le Commentaire du Néoplatonicien Simplicius. Certaines de ces études examinent l’influence ou les transformations des catégories aristotéliciennes chez les Stoïciens, les grammairiens grecs de la fin de l’Antiquité, les Néoplatoniciens tardifs, les Pères de l’Église et dans la tradition latine antique et médiévale. Mobilizing a “cripistemological” approach that “think[s] from the critical, social, and personal position of disability,” (Johnson and McRuer 2014, 134), this paper engages a fundamental site of Christian ableism: the expected cure of disability in the afterlife. I offer the term “curative eschatology” to describe the visceral attachment to the belief that bodies and minds will be remade without disability, madness, or illness in the eschatological (final) future. Examining the affective charge in the promise of a perfect and final Other (...) World, I argue that curative eschatology shapes present-day religious thought and practice by circulating preconscious affects like dread and resentment against conditions of existence that necessitate pain and suffering. The paper concludes by gesturing towards a Crip nontheistic religious practice that nurtures “belief in this world” and affirms a world of becoming and the tragic view of life it entails. (shrink)

The purpose of this book is to investigate the roots of phenomenology and to analyse, from a historical and systematic point of view, the reasons that enabled Husserl to set down in his Logical Investigations the conditions of a strictly descriptive philosophy. The ‘breakthrough’ of phenomenology was made possible by Husserl’s investigations on the specificity of logical forms, and was grounded upon his ability to establish in the Logical Investigations a descriptive distinction between sensitive and categorial forms. Such distinction allows (...) Husserl to account for the possibility of a certain kind of adequacy between speech and perception that is necessarily involved in phenomenological description. Indeed, as a descriptive activity, phenomenology entails the opposition between two fundamentally different modalities of intentionality that both take part in description: intuition on the one hand and signification on the other. By making the adequacy between signification and intuition possible, ‘categorial intuition’ not only sheds new light on the relations between thought and perception, or between seeing and thinking, it also legitimates phenomenological description as a philosophical method. This book proposes a new and revisited reading of the Logical Investigations by examining Husserl’s reform of the theory of categories and its relation to the phenomenological method of description. Cet article fournit, dans sa première section, une analyse méthodologique de l’utilisation de corpora, au cours de laquelle je détaille, de manière argumentée ce qu’on peut en attendre et pour quels objectifs, précise ce qu’on ne peut pas en attendre et montre pourquoi. La première partie conclut sur l’inutilité des corpora d’occurrences en sémantique des langues, même s’ils sont indispensables dans d’autres disciplines (comme, par exemple, les études littéraires) ; j’insiste sur le caractère nuisible de leur utilisation en sémantique, sauf (...) dans un cas que je spécifie, utilisation qui réintroduit l’introspection sémantique en la maquillant derrière un appareil technique inspiré des statistiques. Dans la deuxième section, je montre qu’il existe un moyen de sortir du carcan pseudo-méthodologique que la mode présentant les corpora comme unique accès à l’observation empirique tente d’imposer ; ce moyen, qui part de l’idée d’enrichir les corpora par des indications sur l’interprétabilité des échantillons, comporte deux aspects principaux : (i) réhabiliter l’expérimentation empirique et (ii) rechercher des hypothèses théoriques permettant d’engendrer des hypothèses descriptives à tester au moyen des expériences empiriques. On y insiste sur le fait que, conformément à ce que requiert une démarche scientifique rigoureuse, les tests empiriques ne peuvent pas vérifier une hypothèse, mais seulement la réfuter : c’est l’échec de la réfutation qui constitue un indice de validité (provisoire) de l’hypothèse. La troisième section présente, en détail et avec des illustrations, deux tests empiriques permettant des expérimentations destinées à tester les descriptions sémantiques que l’on peut être amené à proposer. On y insiste sur le fait que les corpora nécessaires à ces expérimentations peuvent être petits, mais nécessitent une interaction minimale entre l’observateur et les destinataires des échantillons : ils sont enrichis par une indication non verbale, fournie par les destinataires des échantillons, à propos de l’éventuelle difficulté qu’ils ont eues à les interpréter. Les tests sémantiques utilisant des unités de langue déjà décrites, le chapitre conclut sur l’avantage d’une incrémentation de la descriptibilité des unités de langue s’appuyant sur la récursivité des moyens de tester les descriptions : toute description non réfutée par les tests existants permet de construire de nouveaux tests. Deliberately with the elaboration of his late 60s’ artworks Nespolo adopts a fragmentary approach toward reality. Through his objects and materials he offers to the viewer a possible ideal reconstruction of his combined elements and object-machines. Through these ones he creates a sort of mental laboratory that suggests to the viewer the possibility to be transported by the shapes of his artworks and to participate to his logical, but also ludic and ironic, artistic proposal.

Many papers have been devoted to the semantic turn Carnap took in the late 1930s after Tarski had explained to him his method for defining truth and his work on the establishment of scientific semantics. Commentators have often argued that the major turn in Carnap’s approach to languages had already been taken in the Logical Syntax of Language, but they have usually assumed that Carnap was happy to subsequently follow Tarski and adopt Tarskian semantics. In this paper, it is argued (...) that this assumption needs to be qualified and that Carnap was actually far from following Tarski when he decided to complement his syntactic method with a semantic one. Carnap and Tarski had different goals, divergent programs, and dissenting views on truth and semantics. After exploring several possible methods for the explication of logical concepts such as L-truth and L-implication, Carnap opted for definitions based on concepts he had found in Wittgenstein’s Tractatus and Waismann’s work on a logical interpretation of probability. Carnap’s reasons for taking a semantic turn are to be understood in the context of his principle of tolerance. He first hoped he could use Tarski’s technique to recover in the semantic setting the completeness result he had tried to establish in the Logical Syntax. His eventual adoption of non-Tarskian semantics can be accounted for by his program of a logical analysis of science—including empirical science—and his ambition to elaborate a unified logical framework for deductive, inductive, and modal logic, and for explicating analyticity. Dans le contexte actuel de nombreuses contestations de grands projets au Québec, le rôle de l’État au regard de l’acceptabilité sociale de tels projets doit être examiné. Or, les interventions de l’État et leur influence sur les réponses du public sont le plus souvent considérées à la pièce, sans perspective globale ni référence à une certaine conduite ou posture attendue de l’État dans la société, rendant la discussion difficile. Cet article propose des repères pour un tel examen. Nous appuyant sur (...) une analyse critique de la littérature afférente à l’acceptabilité sociale, sur l’observation participante au cœur de plusieurs débats récents au Québec et l’analyse d’ouvrages multidisciplinaires sur le rôle de l’État, nous proposons une synthèse des mécanismes par lesquels l’État influence la réponse du public à un projet, une grille classifiant les différentes approches du rôle de l’État comme conduite sociale organisée et, enfin, six critères génériques pour examiner ce rôle tant comme influence que comme conduite sociale. This paper argues that English quantifier phrases of the form ‘every F’ admit of a literal referential interpretation, contrary to the standard semantic account of this expression, according to which it denotes a set and a second-order relation. Various arguments are offered in favor of the referential interpretation, and two likely objections to it are forestalled.
