God, science, sex, gender: an interdisciplinary approach to Christian ethics.Patricia Beattie Jung, Aana Marie Vigen & John Anderson (eds.) - 2010 - Urbana: University of Illinois Press.
God, Sex, Science, Gender: An Interdisciplinary Approach to Christian Ethics is a timely, wide-ranging attempt to rescue dialogues on human sexuality, sexual diversity, and gender from insular exchanges based primarily on biblical scholarship and denominational ideology. Too often, dialogues on sexuality and gender devolve into the repetition of party lines and defensive postures, without considering the interdisciplinary body of scholarly research on this complex subject. This volume expands beyond the usual parameters, opening the discussion to scholars in the humanities, social (...)

Celebrate Suffrage.Patricia Beattie Jung - 2020 - Journal of the Society of Christian Ethics 40 (2):205-220.
2020 marks 100 years of women’s suffrage in the U.S. Considering this anniversary and the Christian presumption in favor of democracy, this essay invites readers to honor all those who worked for women’s suffrage in two specific ways. First, it invites them to tell the whole truth about the movement, both its many moments of grace and its moral failures. Second, it encourages readers to make the connection between this ambiguous legacy and ongoing forms of voter suppression in the U.S. (...)

  5. Abortion and Organ Donation: Christian Reflections on Bodily Life Support.Patricia Beattie Jung - 1988 - Journal of Religious Ethics 16 (2):273 - 305.
In this essay I argue that childbearing and various kinds of organ donation are morally analogous activities. I argue, further, that the ethos of giftgiving ought to inform our analyses of both of these forms of bodily life support. This reframing of the abortion and organ donation debates yields new insights into two relatively neglected subtopics. First, though frequently asserted, few have demonstrated why bodily life support--especially in the form of childbearing--cannot be morally required. This comparison yields insights into the (...)

The AAR-SBL Women’s Caucus session on ‘Beyond Down and Dirty: From Good to Great Sex’ revisited the Good Sex: Feminist Perspectives from the World’s Religions project and book with the participation of two of its co-editors, Mary E. Hunt and Patricia Beattie Jung, and co-author and collaborator, Wanda Defeilt. Scholar colleagues, Brandy Daniels, Fitri Junoes, and Alicia Besa Panganiban, presented intriguing papers on feminist religious and ethical reflections on what constitutes great sex as they examined the issues discussed (...)

  13. The Problem with Manipulation.Patricia Greenspan - 2003 - American Philosophical Quarterly 40 (2):155-64.
There is a well-known scene from The Adventures of Tom Sawyer that illustrates what might be considered benign manipulation: Tom has the job of whitewashing a fence but would rather spend the time with friends. By feigning enthusiasm for the job he manages to get his friends to hang around and do it for him. They even pay to do it - with various little items that he later trades for..

  19. Women, Spirit, and Authority in Plato and Aristotle.Patricia Marechal - 2023 - In Sara Brill (ed.), The Routledge Handbook of Women and Ancient Greek Philosophy. Routledge Handbooks in Philosophy.
In this paper, I provide an interpretation of Plato’s repeated claims in Republic V that women are “weaker” (asthenestera) than men. Specifically, I argue that Plato thinks women have a psychological propensity to get easily dispirited, which makes them less effective in implementing and executing their rational decisions. This interpretation achieves several things. It qualifies Plato’s position regarding women and their position in the polis. It provides the background against which we can interpret Aristotle’s claim in Politics I that women (...)

    Autopoietic enactivism: action and representation re-examined under Peirce’s light.Patrícia Fonseca Fanaya - 2020 - Synthese 198 (Suppl 1):461-483.
The purpose of this article is to start a dialogue between the so-called autopoietic enactivism and the semiotic pragmatism of C. S. Peirce, in order to re-examine both action and representation under a Peircean light. The focus lays on autopoietic enactivism because this approach offers a wider theoretical scope to cognition based on the continuity of life and mind, embodiment, dynamic and non-linear interaction between a system and its environment which are compatible ideas with Peirce’s semiotic pragmatism. The term ‘pragmatic’ (...)

Genomics in Industry: issues of a bio-based economy.Patricia Osseweijer, Laurens Landeweerd & Robin Pierce - 2010 - Genomics, Society and Policy 6 (2):1-14.
What value does genomics hold for industry? Ten years after the White House Press conference where the human genome sequence was first presented, we ask in which ways and to what extent the developments in genomics have been integrated into industry. This enables us to assess whether this integration has been as successful as expected, but also which unexpected developments in genomics advances have triggered additional benefits for industry. Genomics has contributed to the beginning of a global transition to a (...)

Dem Körper eingeschrieben: Verkörperung zwischen Leiberleben und kulturellem Sinn.Matthias Jung, Michaela Bauks & Andreas Ackermann (eds.) - 2015 - Wiesbaden: Springer.

Separate reviews would ordinarily be required of disparate works. Here reviewed together are works as different as the new scholarly thesis of Prakken and a historically directed anthology of papers for students of rhetoric. Their joint consideration, however, is an occasion for serious comment on how the best work in AI and Law should be placed in longstanding traditions. It is an occasion for commenting on the directions of rhetoric in the past few decades.

Like many people, I was initially attracted to free will issues – at first embracing hard determinism, as part of a general rejection of doctrines associated with religion, though exposure to Kant’s views in my first philosophy course made me begin to consider nonreligious grounds for an indeterminist conception of free action. Of course, Kant also takes belief in God and immortality as presupposed by moral agency, but I was never much moved by those arguments. On free will, though, I (...)

We Are Home: A Spirituality of the Environment.Shannon Jung (ed.) - 1993 - Paulist Press.
With this timely book, Dr. Jung invites everyday readers to conceive of themselves not as "other", but as one with God, other people, animals, and plants that share the Earth. Passionate but not preachy, hope-filled but not guilt-driven, this book puts a unique spin on environmental issues and will make stimulating reading for all who ponder their responsibilities to the biosphere.
