(1 other version)Infinity and the mind: the science and philosophy of the infinite.Rudy von Bitter Rucker - 1982 - Princeton, N.J.: Princeton University Press.
In Infinity and the Mind, Rudy Rucker leads an excursion to that stretch of the universe he calls the "Mindscape," where he explores infinity in all its forms: potential and actual, mathematical and physical, theological and mundane. Here Rucker acquaints us with Gödel's rotating universe, in which it is theoretically possible to travel into the past, and explains an interpretation of quantum mechanics in which billions of parallel worlds are produced every microsecond. It is in the realm of (...)

Teaching and the Claim of Bildung: The View from General Didactics.Thomas Rucker - 2019 - Studies in Philosophy and Education 39 (1):51-69.
In this article, I propose a systematization of various aspects of Bildung-supportive teaching, as described in the context of German-language general didactics. I start by describing teaching as the basic form of education in which one person helps another to acquire knowledge. I then clarify the concept of Bildung. It is suggested that Bildung be understood as a process in which an individual deals self-actively with the world and thereby develops a multi-dimensioned ability to self-determination under the claim of morality. (...)

The Problem of Bildung and the Basic Structure of Bildungstheorie.Thomas Rucker & Eric Dan Gerónimo - 2017 - Studies in Philosophy and Education 36 (5):569-584.
In this article, an attempt is made to introduce a systematization of the loosely connected group of authors called Bildungstheorie. This ought to not only be of significance for German-speaking educational science, for the concept of Bildung is also increasingly used internationally for the formulation and development of pedagogical issues. It is proposed that the concept of complexity could be suitable for bringing attention to common presuppositions in the theoretical dealing with the problem of Bildung. The thesis is that Bildung (...)

Behavioral winter: Disillusionment with applied behavioral science and a path to spring forward.David Gal & Derek D. Rucker - 2023 - Behavioral and Brain Sciences 46:e156.
Chater & Loewenstein thoughtfully express their disillusionment with contemporary applied behavioral science, particularly as it pertains to public policy. Although they fault an overemphasis on i-frame approaches, their proposed alternatives leave doubt regarding whether behavioral science has much, if anything, useful to offer policy. We offer two critical principles to guide and motivate more relevant behavioral science.

The following text deals with the underground and the roots of the political: violence and sacrifice. It analyzes an extreme case of political subjectification: the political subject is born at the same moment the »real« subject vanishes. Instead of being a living person, it becomes an icon. By this, the text develops a genealogy of political founding myths that are based both on the dying and the sanctification of special subjects. Four figures will be identified and discussed: the hero, the (...)

A value-oriented framework for education and the behavioral sciences.W. Ray Rucker - 1969 - Journal of Value Inquiry 3 (4):270-280.
The valuing process characterizes man's conscious or unconscious striving in both personal and institutional contexts. Education helps learners to clarify, analyze, and modify their valuing processes. Therapy unifies value thinking with expressions of feeling in the therapist-client relationship.A more comprehensive value theory is provided by the converging perceptions of several leading thinkers. Both valuing (the process) and values (the goals, outcomes, or products) emerge as the bedrock of humanistic studies. A list of categories in which to classify human valuing events (...)

Infinity: new research frontiers.Rudy Rucker, Wolfgang Achtner, Enrico Bombieri, Edward Nelson, W. Hugh Woodin & Harvey M. Friedman (eds.) - 2011 - New York: Cambridge University Press.
'The infinite! No other question has ever moved so profoundly the spirit of man; no other idea has so fruitfully stimulated his intellect; yet no other concept stands in greater need of clarification than that of the infinite.' David Hilbert (1862-1943). This interdisciplinary study of infinity explores the concept through the prism of mathematics and then offers more expansive investigations in areas beyond mathematical boundaries to reflect the broader, deeper implications of infinity for human intellectual thought. More than a dozen (...)

Narrative strategies of transrealism: the interplay of satire, fantasy, and science in American dystopian fiction.Behzad Pourgharib, Hamta Mahdavinataj, Moussa Pourya Asl & Henry Oinas-Kukkonen - 2024 - Journal for Cultural Research 28 (2):163-178.
The rise of transrealism in the second half of the twentieth century embellished the literary landscape in America with a new mode of expression that offered new understanding of time, space, identity, and social values and norms. This study situates the American novelist Kurt Vonnegut’s Player Piano within this literary context to map out the qualities that distinguish it as a transrealistic fiction. We argue that through innovative coalescence of fantasy and realism, this postmodern novel provides a satirical commentary against (...)

    Walter Benjamin: politisches Denken.Christian Voller (ed.) - 2016 - Baden-Baden: Nomos.

Counterfactual Graphical Models for Longitudinal Mediation Analysis With Unobserved Confounding.Ilya Shpitser - 2013 - Cognitive Science 37 (6):1011-1035.
Questions concerning mediated causal effects are of great interest in psychology, cognitive science, medicine, social science, public health, and many other disciplines. For instance, about 60% of recent papers published in leading journals in social psychology contain at least one mediation test (Rucker, Preacher, Tormala, & Petty, 2011). Standard parametric approaches to mediation analysis employ regression models, and either the “difference method” (Judd & Kenny, 1981), more common in epidemiology, or the “product method” (Baron & Kenny, 1986), more common (...)
