Friedrich Daniel Ernst Schleiermacher (1768-1834) entfaltete in Berlin als Gemeindeprediger, Universitätsprofessor und Akademiemitglied ein wirkmächtiges theologisches und philosophisches System zwischen Aufklärung, Deutschem Idealismus und Romantik. Die Kritische Gesamtausgabe (KGA) seiner zu Lebzeiten publizierten sowie seiner nachgelassenen Werke und Briefe ist in fünf Abteilungen gegliedert, wobei jeder Abteilung auch der ihr zugehörige handschriftliche Nachlass zugeordnet ist: I. Schriften und Entwürfe II. Vorlesungen III. Predigten IV. Übersetzungen V. Briefwechsel und biographische Dokumente Die seit 1972 vorbereitete Edition wird kooperativ von den beiden Forschungsstellen (...) in Kiel und in Berlin erarbeitet. Die 1967 gegründete Kieler Forschungsstelle ist eine Einrichtung der dortigen Theologischen Fakultät; die 1979 an der Theologischen Hochschule gegründete Berliner Forschungsstelle ist jetzt in der Berlin-Brandenburgischen Akademie der Wissenschaften beheimatet. Die editorische Arbeit in Kiel, die zunächst 1975-1983 durch die Deutsche Forschungsgemeinschaft finanziert wurde und seit 1984 von der Akademie der Wissenschaften zu Göttingen im Rahmen des Akademien-Programms der Bund-Länder-Kommission für Bildungsplanung und Forschungsförderung betreut wird, konzentrierte sich zunächst auf die I. Abteilung "Schriften und Entwürfe". Diese Abteilung, deren Musterband 1980 publiziert wurde und die insgesamt 14 Bände in 17 Teilbänden (plus Registerband) umfasst, wurde editorisch termingerecht Ende 2002 abgeschlossen; die letzten beiden Textbände erschienen im Herbst 2003. Die editorische Arbeit in Berlin, die zunächst vom Berliner Senat und der Evangelischen Kirche (EKU und EKBB) über die Schleiermachersche Stiftung finanziert wurde und seit 1994 in der Obhut der Berlin-Brandenburgischen Akademie der Wissenschaften liegt, ist seit Beginn vorrangig der V. Abteilung "Briefwechsel und biographische Dokumente" gewidmet. Hier sind bisher neun Bände erschienen, der letzte dokumentiert die Hallenser Zeit bis 1807. In Berlin wurde 1989 auch die Arbeit an der II. Abteilung "Vorlesungen" eröffnet, deren Gedeihen allerdings durch personelle Sparmaßnahmen nach dem Erscheinen des Musterbandes 1998 behindert wurde. Mehrere Bände, finanziert über Einzelprojekte,liegen zur Zeit vor. Die editorische Arbeit in Kiel ist seit Jahresbeginn 2003 neu auf die III. Abteilung "Predigten" gerichtet, wiederum betreut von der Göttinger Akademie. Über das bisher publizierte Predigtkorpus von 583 gedruckten Predigten und Predigtentwürfen hinaus sollen in den kommenden Jahren 750 bisher unbekannte Predigten (238 eigenhändige Predigtentwürfe der Jahre 1794-1808 und 512 nachschriftlich überlieferte Predigten der Jahren 1809-1833) editorisch erschlossen und publiziert werden. Corruption continues to be a considerable challenge for internationally active companies. In this article, we examine personal and socioenvironmental antecedents of corrupt behavior in organizations. In particular, we aim to illuminate the links between Machiavellianism, on-the-job experience with corrupt behavior at work, neutralization, and the attitude of business professionals toward corruption. The empirical analysis is based on the responses of 169 professionals. At first, a positive relationship between both Machiavellianism and on-the-job experience and the acceptance of corruption appears in the (...) model. However, an in-depth mediation analysis shows that neutralization is the keystone linking both Machiavellianism and on-the-job experience to the likelihood to condone corruption. Based on these results, we offer avenues for further research and implications for practitioners. (shrink)

Otfried Höffe is one of the foremost political philosophers in Europe today. In this major work, already a classic in continental Europe, he re-examines philosophical discourse on justice - from Classical Greece to the present day. Höffe confronts what he sees as the two major challenges to any theory of justice: the legal, positivist claim that there are no standards of justice external to legal systems; and the anarchist claim that justice demands the rejection and abolition of all legal (...) and state systems. Höffe sets out to continue the 'philosophical project of modernity', the legitimation of human rights, and their guarantee by the state, while at the same time rehabilitating the classical theory of political justice represented by Plato and Aristotle. He questions the success of the positivists in avoiding extra-legal normative claims, and casts doubt on the plausibility of their criticism of the Natural Law tradition. Most anarchists, he argues, rely on an uncritical assumption that social institutions other than states and legal orders do not coerce. In Höffe's view, some coercion is unavoidable, and the grounds for its justification must be examined. Principles of justice will be those principles which define fundamental rights, and which must be enforced if rights are to be respected. (shrink)

Kant is widely acknowledged for his critique of theoretical reason, his universalistic ethics, and his aesthetics. Scholars, however, often ignore his achievements in the philosophy of law and government. At least four innovations that are still relevant today can be attributed to Kant. He is the first thinker, and to date the only great thinker, to have elevated the concept of peace to the status of a foundational concept of philosophy. Kant links this concept to the political innovation of his (...) time, a republic devoted to human rights. He extends the concept by adding to it the right of nations and cosmopolitan law. Finally, Kant democratizes Plato's notion of philosopher kings with a concept of 'kingly people'. This book examines all aspects of this important, but neglected, body of Kant's writings. (shrink)

What is politics? How is politics different from other spheres of human life? What is behind the debasement of political life today? This book argues that the most illuminating answers to these questions have come from Hannah Arendt. Arendt held that Western philosophy has never had a 'pure concept of the political', and that political philosophers have been guided and misguided by the assumptions implicit in their metaphysical questions. Her project was 'to look at politics … with eyes unclouded by (...) philosophy', and to retrieve the non-theoretical understanding of politics implicit in ancient Greek literature and history. David Arndt's original and accessible study shows how Arendt reworked some of the basic concepts of political philosophy, which in turn led her to a re-interpretation of American political history and even to a profoundly original reading of the US Declaration of Independence. Utilizing an idea that has its first appearance in Gerhard Gentzen’s unpublished manuscripts, we generate an exhaustive repertoire of all the possible inference rules that are related to the left implication inference rule of the sequent calculus from a ground sequent, that is, a logical axiom. We discuss the similarities and differences of these derived rules as well as their interaction with the implication right rule under cut and the structural axiom. We further consider the question of analyticity of cuts (...) in calculi using one of the new rules instead of the standard left implication rule. (shrink)

Der Begriff ist ebenso wie sein Gegenbegriff, der der theoretischen Philosophie, ungewöhnlich, sogar provokativ. Otfried Höffe zeigt, dass Ethik als wissenschaftliche und zugleich sittlich engagierte Disziplin zu begreifen ist. Für diesen Zweck bedarf es einer besonderen Rationalitätsform, einer Grundriss-Wissenschaft.

Biobanks, collecting human specimen, medical records, and lifestyle-related data, face the challenge of having contradictory missions: on the one hand serving the collective welfare through easy access for medical research, on the other hand adhering to restrictive privacy expectations of people in order to maintain their willingness to participate in such research. In this article, ethical frameworks stressing the societal value of low-privacy expectations in order to secure biomedical research are discussed. It will turn out that neither utilitarian nor communitarian (...) or classical libertarian ethics frameworks will help to serve both goals. Instead, John Rawls’ differentiation of the “right” and the “good” is presented in order to illustrate the possibility of “serving two masters”: individual interests of privacy, and societal interests of scientific progress and intergenerational justice. In order to illustrate this counterbalancing concept with an example, the five-pillar concept of the German Ethics Council will be briefly discussed. (shrink)

This article sets out to identify Karl Jaspers as a European thinker, one who understands 'Europeanness' as a cosmopolitan attitude. It recalls Jaspers bio- graphical convictions to the conception of Europe by referencing several of his publications. Inextricably linked to the cosmopolitan understanding of 'Euro- pean ness' is Jaspers' theory of truth which, as this article intends to show, can only be understood in its plurality of linguistic ambiguity and individual exis- tence. Additionally, Jaspers sees the historical foundations of Europe (...) in the Axial Age of antiquity in which its plurality is already inherent. Ultimately, this culminates in his assertion that in order to be European, one must first become a true person by actualising their selfhood in freedom. (shrink)
