Jacques Derrida is, in the words of the_ New York Times_, "perhaps the world's most famous philosopher—if not the only famous philosopher." He often provokes controversy as soon as his name is mentioned. But he also inspires the respect that comes from an illustrious career, and, among many who were his colleagues and peers, he inspired friendship. _The Work of Mourning_ is a collection that honors those friendships in the wake of passing. Because of their range, brilliance, and singularity, the ideas of the philosopher-critic-historian Michel Foucault have gained extraordinary currency throughout the Western intellectual community. This book offers a selection of seven of Foucault's most important published essays, translated from the French, with an introductory essay and notes by Donald F. Bouchard. Also included are a summary of a course given by Foucault at College de France; the transcript of a conversation between Foucault and Gilles Deleuze; and an interview with Foucault (...) that appeared in the journal Actuel. Professor Bouchard has divided the book into three closely related sections. The four essays in Part One examine language as a "perilous limit" of what we know and what we are. The essays in the second part suggest the methodological guidelines to which Foucault subscribes, and they record, in the editor's words, "the penetration of the language of literature into the domain of discursive thought." The material in the last section is more obviously political than the essays. It treats language in use, language attempting to impart knowledge and power. Translated by the editor and Sherry Simon into fluent and lucid English, these essays will appeal primarily to students of literature, especially those interested in contemporary continental structuralist criticism. But because of the breadth of Foucault's interests, they should also prove valuable to anthropologists, linguists, sociologists, and psychologists. (shrink)

In these lectures Michel Foucault presents for the first time his approach to the question of power that will be the focus of his research up to the writing of Discipline and Punish (1975) and beyond. His analysis starts with a detailed account of Richelieu’s repression of the Nu-pieds revolt (1639-1640) and then goes on to show how the apparatus of power developed by the monarchy on this occasion breaks with the system of juridical and judicial institutions of the Middle Ages and opens out onto a “judicial State apparatus”, a “repressive system”, whose function is focused on the confinement of those who challenge its order. Michel Foucault systemizes the approach of a history of truth on the basis of the study of “juridico-political matrices” that he had begun in the previous year’s lectures (Lectures on the Will to Know) and which is at the heart of the notion of “knowledge-power”. In these lectures Foucault develops his theory of justice and penal law. Ce livre ne demande donc pas si le christianisme est vrai ou faux. Il met à nu le genre de Vérité que le christianisme professe et propose aux hommes. De nombreuses études ont été consacrées au vocabulaire psychologique et aux fonctions intellectuelles dans la littérature grecque et singulièrement au théâtre notamment depuis les travaux de Br. Snell jusqu’aux ouvrages de S. D. Sullivan. L’article ici proposé est à la fois modeste et précis : il analyse comment le théâtre tragique est un corpus privilégié pour saisir la manière dont l’intelligence peut se présenter de manière traditionnelle avec un sens concret lié à l’agir, mais également s’enrichir en s’écartant de ces (...) emplois, ou même apparaître plus abstraitement comme une réflexion sur le sens de l’action humaine, dans un drame où celle-ci est à la fois mise en scène et mise en question. L’étude ne porte pas seulement sur la distinction entre des sens traditionnels et des significations novatrices, mais sur les contextes dramatiques dans lesquelles ces notions sont employées, car ceux-ci peuvent contribuer à renouveler l’emploi d’un sens apparemment traditionnel (ainsi des contextes à valeur politique plus marquée chez Sophocle ou Euripide). De même, l’examen ne se limite pas à nous et noein : il prend en compte, d’une part les créations lexicales propres à un auteur pour mesurer leur éventuelle importance sur l’évolution de la notion (Eschyle), et d’autre part certains dérivés et composés — pour autant qu’ils font intervenir la notion d’intelligence — comme ἐννοεῖν, ἔννους, πρόνοια, ou comme l’antonyme ἄνοια : ces mots, verbes, noms ou adjectifs, permettent en effet de sérier des emplois liés à l’action pratique, mais où la notion d’intelligence revêt une portée essentielle, et qui sont parfois proches de ceux présents chez les historiens contemporains comme Hérodote ou Thucydide. L’analyse montre comment le théâtre tragique, dans sa forme dialogique elle-même, présente des situations conflictuelles où est questionné le sens même du nous selon les points de vue divers des personnages, ainsi que les réflexions des personnages ou du chœur sur ces conflits, en mettant en scène des prises de décision qui se traduisent ou non en actions. Le corpus tragique est ainsi un corpus important pour l’étude de l’évolution de la notion d’intelligence en Grèce antique avant Platon. (shrink)

Sur la base d’une réflexion sur la moralité du sens commun, Henry Sidgwick dégage les différentes méthodes éthiques auxquelles celle-ci adhère inconsciemment. Trois méthodes principales construisent des systèmes d’évaluation et de décision de l’action humaine : l’hédonisme égoïste, l’intuitionnisme et l’utilitarisme. S’il est largement possible de montrer les fondements intuitifs de l’utilitarisme, il est par contre impossible d’apporter la preuve rationnelle à quiconque fait de son bonheur privé le souverain bien qu’il doit travailler à promouvoir le plus grand bonheur du (...) plus grand nombre, pour la raison essentielle que le calcul utilitariste peut exiger, en certaines circonstances, le sacrifice de l’intérêt propre, de sorte qu’ultimement ce qui se révèle, au théoricien de l’éthique, c’est le dualisme de la raison pratique et le chaos de la moralité. Comme la musique, la psychanalyse est un art d'interprétation. Mais on ne trouvera pas ici de déchiffrement de l'inconscient des œuvres musicales ou d'analyse de leurs auteurs. Il s'agit plutôt de l'autre sens du mot interpréter : jouer un morceau, en donner sa version, le dire dans sa propre langue en espérant qu'elle sera entendue par d'autres. Ce livre s'adresse à ceux pour qui la musique n'est pas une question de savoir, de culture ou de distinction, mais qui entrent en (...) elle comme dans la nuit. Ceux qui entretiennent avec toutes choses des relations musicales inconscientes. Ceux qui cherchent en elle non l'avoir, mais l'être.
