Assigning the appropriate moral status to different stages of human development is an urgent problem in bioethics. Many philosophers have attempted to assess developmental events using strict ontological principles to determine when a developing entity becomes essentially human. This approach is not consistent with recent findings in reproductive and stem cell biology, including the discovery of the plasticity of early embryonic development and the advent of induced pluripotent stem cells. Although corporate decision makers may justify charitable contributions on strategic grounds, extremely large corporate philanthropic contributions may beperceived by shareholders as unnecessary. If stockholders attempt to limit corporate philanthropy, then governance mechanisms should put a cap on giving amounts. Using a matched-paired sample to control for industry and company size, theauthors compared big givers and small givers. The authors find that blockholders and institutional owners limit corporate philanthropy. This suggests that high levels of corporate philanthropy may be perceived as excessive (...) by influentialstockholders, and some governance mechanisms act to curtail it. (shrink)

Gayatri Chakravorty Spivak's original essay "Can the Subaltern Speak?" transformed the analysis of colonialism through an eloquent and uncompromising argument that affirmed the contemporary relevance of Marxism while using deconstructionist methods to explore the international division of labor and capitalism's "worlding" of the world. Spivak's essay hones in on the historical and ideological factors that obstruct the possibility of being heard for those who inhabit the periphery. It is a probing interrogation of what it means to have political subjectivity, to (...) be able to access the state, and to suffer the burden of difference in a capitalist system that promises equality yet withholds it at every turn. Since its publication, "Can the Subaltern Speak?" has been cited, invoked, imitated, and critiqued. In these phenomenal essays, eight scholars take stock of the effects and response to Spivak's work. They begin by contextualizing the piece within the development of subaltern and postcolonial studies and the quest for human rights. Then, through the lens of Spivak's essay, they rethink historical problems of subalternity, voicing, and death. A final section situates "Can the Subaltern Speak?" within contemporary issues, particularly new international divisions of labor and the politics of silence among indigenous women of Guatemala and Mexico. In an afterword, Spivak herself considers her essay's past interpretations and future incarnations and the questions and histories that remain secreted in the original and revised versions of "Can the Subaltern Speak?"—both of which are reprinted in this book. Professional historians of science generally recognize the importance of Lavoisier's theory of heat. However, it commonly receives scant attention in the historical treatment of his chemical theories except perhaps as an example illustrating his conservatism and giving the impression that the caloric theory, although perhaps important in the development of ideas on the nature of heat, is independent of and bears little relationship to his general chemistry or is incidental to an understanding of that chemistry. An examination of Lavoisier's writings (...) suggests that the caloric theory is not merely a milestone in the development of physics; and rather than an omittable appendage, his concept of heat forms an integral part of his chemical system and plays a central, necessary role in his oxidation theory in particular. The purpose of this paper is to give a general description of Lavoisier's ideas on the nature and action of heat, the origin of these ideas, their development, and their relation to his general chemistry, pointing out his conservatism as well as his innovations. This paper presents an analysis of the applicability of a principalist approach for a global, or cross-cultural, bioethics. We focus especially on the principle of individual autonomy, a core value in ethical discourse. We echo some long-standing criticisms of other anthropologists, sociologists, and many medical ethicists that the individualistic approach to autonomy is a Euro-American value and cannot be ethically applied in all settings. As a remedy, we suggest an adaptation of Kleinman's Explanatory Model approach to questions of decisionmaking. We (...) argue that the analysis and resolution of ethical dilemmas might also benefit from forms of pedagogy that integrate anthropological and other social science perspectives, and the incorporation of ethnographic techniques in ethical practice. Think back to your hopes, your dreams, your overall plan and expectations for life and where you think you would end up one day. Now imagine facing your own mortality; life as you have known rapidly approaching an end that you were not able to prepare for (...) prior to its arrival. Imagine the fear, the uncertainty; imagine how your family and friends would feel surrounding you on your deathbed.The above was the reality for one of my patients. He was a 25-year-old gentleman rapidly approaching the end of his life. As a physician, it is our duty to do no harm and provide the best standard of care to each patient we see on a day-to-day basis. In some cases, what truly constitutes the best standard of care is uncertain, and oftentimes, we find ourselves stepping out of medicine and into the world of medical ethics. Upon arrival to the hospital, this patient’s initial decision was to be made full “Do Not Resuscitate” and “Do Not Intubate.” This decision was made while the patient was suffering mild symptoms of alcohol withdrawal. He was evaluated by psychiatry, we reviewed every medical note we had to assess for signs of depression, and ultimately he was deemed competent, demonstrating a mental capacity to understand his current healthcare status and the ramifications of the decision he was making.As a 28-year-old resident physician, my experience with medicine may be limited relative to those surrounding me in the profession. My intuition, though, has been sharpened with numerous experiences over the last two years dealing with patients driven into depression following the COVID pandemic, finding solace in the use of hard liquor, and subsequently suffering the side-effects of its toxicity. This 25-year-old patient, upon initial assessment, appeared closer to the age of 40; his eyes were icteric, his skin was profoundly jaundiced, and his abdomen distended visibly underneath his hospital gown and blanket. His mother sat at his bedside, fully unaware of the severity of his condition. The patient was angry, questioning why he was admitted and shouting at his mom for forcing him to be evaluated. My initial review of his chart was as in-depth as it could be for having such a limited health history available. Despite that, I could see the path that this would head down over the next 48 hours. Withdrawal was inevitable. The likelihood of needing intubation within the next 24 hours was extremely high. The only bit of uncertainty I was left with was whether or not this patient would survive following these anticipated life-saving interventions. I had anticipated that this would be a long, tenuous, and challenging admission requiring the highest level of care both for myself as a physician and through the healthcare system within our hospital as a whole. But what I did not anticipate was discussing whether or not a 25-year-old should be a DNR/DNI patient.By day 2 of the patient’s admission, evaluation by hepatology confirmed my suspicions; this patient was suffering from fulminant liver failure, and without a transplant, he would surely die. However, we were not able to have this discussion with the patient, as his withdrawal had progressed to the point of disorientation and agitation. The brief episodes of consciousness were spaced through long [End Page 5] periods of unresponsiveness. Prior to this, as mentioned above, the patient was alert and oriented x3 and had expressed, in no uncertain terms, a DNR/DNI status; the confounding factor, though, was during his time awake, he had not been evaluated by hepatology and had not been diagnosed with fulminant liver failure. As such, the prospect of a liver transplant, which would provide life-saving treatment and potentially a path back to life as this patient knew it, had not existed then. We argue that number principles may be learnable instead of innate, by suggesting that children acquire probabilistically true number concepts rather than algorithms. We also suggest that non-propositional representational formats (e.g., mental models) may implicitly provide information that supports the induction of numerical principles. Given probabilistically true number concepts, the problem of the acquisition of mathematical principles is eliminated.
