Originally published in 1944, this book presents a study of the life and work of Roman Catholic priest and scholar Alfred Loisy, written by fellow Modernist Maude Petre. Petre died shortly after completing this short biography, and the text begins with a note on her life by James A. Walker. This book will be of value to anyone with an interest in this important figure in the controversial Catholic Modernist movement.

In spite of a large and diverse body of research on the topic, the relationship between Christianity and modernity is still an open question and a nodal point for our understanding of Western civilization. This paper aims at providing an original contribution to this debate by bringing into play the impact of gender-related views and practices. In particular, it focuses on Catholic Modernism, and analyzes this phenomenon and its repression by the Vatican hierarchy from the understudied perspective of female historiography (...) by way of an exemplary case study: the life and work of Maude Petre. Maude Petre (1863–1942) was a British Roman Catholic, member of a female religious community, a leading figure of Catholic Modernism, and one of its first historians. Because of the long-term patterns of gender imbalance which shaped the Catholic establishment and milieu, Petre's position as an active female modernist intellectual gave her a truly unique perspective on the confrontation between tradition and change within Western Christianity. Her work offers an outstanding opportunity to revise existing definitions of Catholic Modernism, while also opening new avenues to interpret the religious entanglements of the Western intellectual tradition at large. Alfred Loisy and Maude Petre, like others who were associated with the Modernist movement in the Roman Catholic Church, shared hopes in a renewed Catholicism that would bring it into a positive relationship with modernity. With the Vatican condemnation of Modernism in 1907, Loisy abandoned all optimism for viable reform in the Church, and instead looked forward to a Religion of Humanity. While Petre found Loisy's ideal attractive, she retained a hope that the Church would undergo renewal (...) at some future point. Each of them had to come to terms with a dark side of modernity that emerged with the Great War. This article seeks to offer a socially and politically situated analysis of the disenchantment produced by sociological research categorised as critical. It offers a step-by-step comparison of how a study on voluntary work (that produced disenchantment for some, truism for others) was received. It also gives weight to the fact that a research process can also lead to the politicisation of research. The article sheds light on two arguments for the autonomy of engagement that lies at the heart of the (...) critique of a critique: one concerning the autonomy of the actors’ “citizen engagement” and of their relation to work, and the other concerning the autonomy of the researcher’s work and its “commitments”, generally presented as “research neutrality”. This reflexive attention to the effects of the research investigation not only on others but also on the author of the research ultimately questions the social and political scope of the “conception of hostile worlds” inscribed in the “doctrine of separated spheres” of work and commitment that, in the present case, concerns both the object and the practice of research. Décrire adéquatement la signification d’un terme, ou d’un énoncé, suppose souvent de faire appel au co-texte ou au contexte. Le linguiste doit alors recourir à des corpus authentiques et proposer des procédures de contextualisation. Une telle démarche, que l’on peut à bon droit qualifier d’étique, est loin d’être suffisante. Elle ne tient pas compte des stratégies de contextualisation et de recontextualisation des discours par les locuteurs eux-mêmes, sans aucun doute liées à l’existence d’une compétence métalinguistique et métapragmatique. La contextualisation est (...) donc aussi un problème émique. Dans le cadre d’une enquête ethnographique au sein d’une troupe de théâtre, incluant l’observation et l’enregistrement audiovisuel des différentes activités des comédiens, on s’est intéressé aux phases de travail théâtral – lecture à la table et répétitions – pendant lesquelles les participants se confrontent à des textes qui leur posent des difficultés d’interprétation. Face à des énoncés dont la signification ne fait pas nécessairement problème, mais dont le sens en contexte peut sembler problématique, les comédiens et les metteurs en scène sont amenés à devoir recontextualiser. Nous étudierons ces pratiques de contextualisation, leur émergence – soit parce que les participants l’exigent, soit parce que les locuteurs eux-mêmes en éprouvent la nécessité pour parvenir à une pertinence communicative plus forte – en en soulignant la dimension collective. Clinical trials emerged in rapid succession as the COVID-19 pandemic created an unprecedented need for life-saving therapies. Fair and equitable subject selection in clinical trials offering investigational therapies ought to be an urgent moral concern. Subject selection determines the distribution of risks and benefits, and impacts the applicability of the study results for the larger population. While Research Ethics Committees monitor fair subject selection within each trial, no standard oversight exists for subject selection across multiple trials for the same disease. (...) Drawing on the experience of multiple clinical trials at a single academic medical centre in the USA, we posit that concurrent COVID-19 trials are liable to unfair and inequitable subject selection on account of scientific uncertainty, lack of transparency, scarcity and, lastly, structural barriers to equity compounded by implicit bias. To address the critical gap in the current literature and international regulation, we propose new ethical guidelines for research design and conduct that bolsters fair and equitable subject selection. Although the proposed guidelines are tailored to the research design and protocol of concurrent trials in the COVID-19 pandemic, they may have broader relevance to single COVID-19 trials. (shrink)

Background In June 2016, the Parliament of Canada passed federal legislation allowing eligible adults to request Medical Assistance in Dying (MAID). Since its implementation, there likely exists a degree of hesitancy among some healthcare providers due to the law being inconsistent with personal beliefs and values. It is imperative to explore how nurses in Quebec experience the shift from accompanying palliative clients through “a natural death” to participating in “a premeditated death.” Research question/aim/objectives This study aims to explore how Quebec (...) nurses personally and professionally face the new practice of MAID and their role evolution. Research design A grounded theory design was used. Participants and research context We recruited 37 nurses who participated in or coordinated at least one MAID. Semi-structured interviews and focus groups were conducted and audiotaped. Data collection and analysis followed Strauss and Corbin steps. Ethical considerations Ethics approval was received from the investigator’s affiliated University. Participants were informed regarding the research goal, signed a written consent, and were assigned pseudonyms. Findings/results Results show that nurses experienced the wide range of paradoxe during MAID centering around the following eight elements: 1) confrontation abouth death, 2) choice, 3) time of death, 4) emotional load, 5) new Bill, 6) relationship with the person, 7) communication skills, and 8) healthcare setting. The shifting of views and values in this new role is presented by the contradiction of opposites. Conclusions A better understanding of the paradox experienced by nurses involved with MAID paves the way for the development of interventions. (shrink)

The paper is devoted to Nikolay Lossky who was one of the leading Russian philosophers of the first half of the twentieth century. We demonstrate the interrelationship between three aspects of Lossky’s philosophy: realism in the theory of knowledge, hierarchical personalism, and supra-naturalistic concept of evolution. We pay attention to the contemporary relevance of Lossky, and we discuss and critique his ideas in light of those of other philosophers. Lossky acknowledges that the subject interacts with being itself and that knowledge (...) is not a shadow or copy of being. His ontology is based on intuitivism and epistemological optimism. Its main categories are God, as the super-systematic principle, and monads. In Lossky’s metaphysics, the idea of abstract ideal principles of being is quite harmoniously combined with personalism. Lossky’s ontology has strong ethical underpinnings. He considers that values are rooted in being and that the evolution of the world is directed by God towards the good. Lossky elaborates a supra-naturalistic concept of evolution. He extrapolates principles of teleological determination, which are fundamental to human existence, on the underlying levels of the world as a whole. Many trends of modern thought are in tune with Lossky’s philosophy, including a return to metaphysics, panpsychism, Platonism, and the desire to unite the religious worldview with new scientific discoveries. Cette ambiguïté originelle conduit à de fréquents conflits de normes sur le plan théorique, artistique et esthétique. Ce n’est pas la même chose de mettre en scène une œuvre musicale n’ayant qu’une relation analogique au livret représenté sur scène, et de mettre en scène une œuvre pleinement fictionnelle et théâtrale. Drawing on current debates at the frontiers of economics, psychology, and political philosophy, this book explores the challenges that arise for liberal democracies from a confrontation between modern technologies and the bounds of human rationality. The Czech philosopher Jan Patocka, who studied with Husserl and Heidegger, is widely recognized as the most influential thinker to come from postwar Eastern Europe. Refusing to join the Communist party after World War II, he was banned from academia and publication for the rest of his life, except for a brief time following the liberalizations of the Prague spring of 1968. Joining Vaclav Havel and Jiri Hajek as a spokesman for the Chart 77 human-rights declaration of 1977, Patocka was (...) harassed by authorities, arrested, and finally died of a heart attack during prolonged interrogation. _Plato and Europe_, arguably Patocka's most important book, consists of a series of lectures delivered in the homes of friends after his last banishment from the academy just three years before his death. Here, he presents his most mature ideas about the history of Western philosophy, arguing that the idea of the care of the soul is fundamental to the philosophical tradition beginning with the Greeks. Explaining how the care of the soul is elaborated as the problem of how human beings may make their world one of truth and justice, Patocka develops this thesis through a treatment of Plato, Democritus, and Aristotle, showing how considerations about the soul are of central importance in their writings. Práce se zabývá metodologickou stránkou teorie lidského jednání, která vznikla v rámci Weberovy rozumějící sociologie a byla dále transformována ve fenomenologické sociologii Alfreda Schütze. Analýza se zaměřuje především na to, jakým způsobem se oba myslitelé pokusili vyřešit problém interpretace lidského jednání ze strany (vědeckého) pozorovatele a samotného aktéra. Ukazuje se, že Weber stojí i přes snahu zůstat v kontaktu s psychologickou realitou jednání vždy již na pozici vědeckého pozorovatele. Schütz usiluje o důkladnější založení weberiánského postoje a ukazuje, jakým způsobem stanovisko (...) nezaujatého pozorovatele vystupuje z bezprostředně ("naivně") prožívané reality přirozeného světa. Oba myslitelé diskutují otázku racionality jednání a v závěru dospívají k přesvědčení, že racionalita (chápaná jako logická konzistence a empirická efektivita jednání) není ani tak charakteristikou, která by připadala "reálnému" jednání, ale spíše normou vědeckého popisu a vědeckého postupu. Argumentace je rozvinuta v rámci úvahy o chápání racionality v současné ekonomické teorii a roli introspekce. (shrink)
