Picture-Word Interference Effects Are Robust With Covert Retrieval, With and Without Gamification.Hsi T. Wei, You Zhi Hu, Mark Chignell & Jed A. Meltzer - 2022 - Frontiers in Psychology 12.
The picture-word interference paradigm has been used to investigate the time course of processes involved in word retrieval, but is challenging to implement online due to dependence on measurements of vocal reaction time. We performed a series of four experiments to examine picture-word interference and facilitation effects in a form of covert picture naming, with and without gamification. A target picture was accompanied by an audio word distractor that was either unrelated, phonologically-related, associatively-related, or categorically-related to the picture. Participants were (...)

  3. Review: Saving God from Saving God. [REVIEW]Andrew Chignell & Dean Zimmerman - 2012 - Books and Culture 15 (3).
Mark Johnston’s book, Saving God (Princeton University Press, 2010) has two main goals, one negative and the other positive: (1) to eliminate the gods of the major Western monotheisms (Judaism, Christianity, and Islam) as candidates for the role of “the Highest One”; (2) to introduce the real Highest One, a panentheistic deity worthy of devotion and capable of extending to us the grace needed to transform us from inwardly-turned sinners to practitioners of agape. In this review, we argue that (...)

Neither Naïve nor Critical Reconstruction: Dispute Mediators, Impasse, and the Design of Argumentation.Mark Aakhus - 2003 - Argumentation 17 (3):265-290.
This study investigates how dispute-mediators handle impasse in the re-negotiation of divorce decrees by divorced couples. Three sources of impasse and three strategies for handling impasse are identified based on analysis of mediation transcripts. The concern here lies not so much in the disputant's arguments but in the discussion procedures dispute-mediators use to craft the disputant's argumentation into a tool to solve conflict. Their moves are understood here as a practice of reconstructing argumentative discourse that is neither naïve nor critical (...)

The Angelic Hierarchy: Aligning Ethical Push and Pull.Mark Walker - 2008 - Studies in Ethics, Law, and Technology 2 (3).
A complementary `monetary' system is proposed: a computer-based system that allows us to assess the relative pro-community altruism of individuals. Such an arrangement could provide us with an alternate means of seeking social recognition than that offered by capitalism; specifically it offers the possibility of recognition based on altruistic contributions to society. This proposal promises several ethical advantages to our present social arrangements.

  10. Revisiting the Role of “Shared Value” in the Business-Society Relationship.Mark Aakhus & Michael Bzdak - 2012 - Business and Professional Ethics Journal 31 (2):231-246.
This article critically examines Porter and Kramer’s shared value concept to identify its boundaries and limits as a framework for understanding the role of philanthropy and CSR relative to the role of business in society. Cases of implementation and alternative perspectives on innovation reveal that, despite its appeal and uptake in corporate and philanthropic circles, shared value merely advances the conventional rhetoric that what is good for business is good for society. The shared value approach narrows what counts as social (...)

Wittgenstein and Philosophy of Religion.Mark Addis & Robert L. Arrington (eds.) - 2000 - New York: Routledge.
An exciting introduction to the contribution which the later Wittgenstein made to the philosophy of religion. Although his writings on the subject have been few, Wittgenstein developed influential and controversial theories on both religion which emphasize the distinctive nature of religious discourse and how this nature can be misunderstood when viewed in direct competition with science. The contributors of this collection shed new light on the perennial debate between faith and reason. The result is a collection that is both informative (...)

Every 4 years, for the past three decades, the world of argumentation research has gathered in Amsterdam at the International Society for the Study of Argumentation conferences to explore advances in understanding argumentation and how argumentation advances our understanding of the human condition. While comprehensive proceedings of selected papers are produced to document what has transpired in the world of argumentation over the preceding 4 years, there remains the important matter of taking the intellectual pulse of the world’s argumentation scholars, (...)

Scientific Discovery in the Social Sciences.Mark Addis, Fernand Gobet & Peter Sozou (eds.) - 2019 - Springer Verlag.
This volume offers selected papers exploring issues arising from scientific discovery in the social sciences. It features a range of disciplines including behavioural sciences, computer science, finance, and statistics with an emphasis on philosophy. The first of the three parts examines methods of social scientific discovery. Chapters investigate the nature of causal analysis, philosophical issues around scale development in behavioural science research, imagination in social scientific practice, and relationships between paradigms of inquiry and scientific fraud. The next part considers the (...)

In lines 35–8 Ovid compliments the poem's recipient Brutus on his skill as a forensic orator. The transmitted text is as follows:hostibus eueniat quam sis uiolentus in armissentire et linguae tela subire tuae, quae tibi tam tenui cura limantur ut omnesistius ingenium corporis esse negent.

  16. Linguistic competence and expertise.Mark Addis - 2013 - Phenomenology and the Cognitive Sciences 12 (2):327-336.
Questions about the relationship between linguistic competence and expertise will be examined in the paper. Harry Collins and others distinguish between ubiquitous and esoteric expertise. Collins places considerable weight on the argument that ordinary linguistic competence and related phenomena exhibit a high degree of expertise. His position and ones which share close affinities are methodologically problematic. These difficulties matter because there is continued and systematic disagreement over appropriate methodologies for the empirical study of expertise. Against Collins, it will be argued (...)

    Science and the British Empire.Mark Harrison - 2005 - Isis 96 (1):56-63.
The last few decades have witnessed a flowering of interest in the history of science in the British Empire. This essay aims to provide an overview of some of the most important work in this area, identifying interpretative shifts and emerging themes. In so doing, it raises some questions about the analytical framework in which colonial science has traditionally been viewed, highlighting interactions with indigenous scientific traditions and the use of network‐based models to understand scientific relations within and beyond colonial (...)

    Eudaimonist Autonomy.Mark LeBar - 2005 - American Philosophical Quarterly 42 (3):171 - 183.
Kant claims that autonomy is possible only if the law that determines the will disregards any incentive grounded in the natural world. Here I develop and defend an alternative notion of autonomy, drawn from the ancient eudaimonists, on which practical reason is grounded in our interest in living well. This allows eudaimonism a conception of the autonomy of the will in which (like Kant’s) the will is the source of its own laws, but in which (unlike Kant’s) it has an (...)

Transcendental Idealism: What Jerusalem Has To Say to Königsberg.Mark Glouberman - 2010 - Dialogue 49 (1):25-51.

    Ricœur’s Ethical Poetics: Genesis and Elements.Mark S. Muldoon - 2005 - International Philosophical Quarterly 45 (1):61-86.
Despite his enormous bibliography of written works, Ricoeur has never devoted an entire tome to either moral philosophy or ethics per se. Three chapters of one work, Oneself as Another, do, however, encompass what he calls summarily his “little ethics.” To understand Ricoeur’s ethical project, it is important to see its genesis in his earlier anthropological studies and to follow its evolving nature into a hermeneutical poetics. Ricoeur’s ethical orientation is teleological. He makes a strong distinction between ethics and morality, (...)

This volume examines the concept of free will -- the capacity of rational agents to choose a course of action from among various alternatives. The author intends this work to be a general guide to the variety of philosophical opinions and dimensions that deal with the concept of free will. He defines the concept, provides a historical overview, and then he goes on the present the various philosophical views and opinions that surround this topic.
