“That proves you mad, because you know it not”: impaired insight and the dilemma of governing psychiatric patients as legal subjects.Neil Gong - 2017 - Theory and Society 46 (3):201-228.
This article investigates “impaired insight,” a controversial psychiatric category describing a mad person unable to know his or her madness. Like “moral insanity” and other concepts before it, impaired insight offers a way to link the disparate logics of human responsibility in psychiatry and the law. I attribute its development to changes wrought by deinstitutionalization, the rise of antipsychotic medication, and patient incarceration in penal settings. In a system that aims to govern psychiatric patients through their freedom, the logic of (...)

    On Language.Gong Jianping - 2001 - Contemporary Chinese Thought 32 (3):8-17.
Talk is a way of human existence. Through talk we can trace signs of existence. However, existence is not merely limited to the restricted domain of talk. Language serves as a medium of communication between people and is a resort of written signs. The sphere of existence, at the same time, is much deeper than that of language. In this vaster sphere of existence, and especially in aspects such as relations between man and god, man and universe, man and the (...)

Do Bond Investors Care About Engagement Auditors’ Negative Experiences? Evidence from China.Guangming Gong, Liang Xiao, Si Xu & Xun Gong - 2019 - Journal of Business Ethics 158 (3):779-806.
Using data from China, where the identity of engagement auditors is disclosed, we find significant relationships between engagement auditors’ negative experiences and the costs of corporate bonds. Further tests differentiate field and review auditors’ experiences, and we find that both field and review auditors’ negative experiences are significantly related to higher costs of corporate bonds. In addition, we find that the above results are significant only when the engagement auditors are affiliated with non-Big10 audit firms. Using path analysis, we find (...)

Conventionalization of Linguistic Knowledge Under Communicative Constraints.Tao Gong, Andrea Puglisi, Vittorio Loreto & William S.-Y. Wang - 2008 - Biological Theory 3 (2):154-163.
The language game approach has recently been adopted to explore the conventionalization of linguistic knowledge in a social environment. Most contemporary studies focus on the dynamics of language games in random or predefined social networks, but neglect the reverse roles of communicative constraints in language evolution and social structures. This article, based on two forms of language games , examines whether a simple, distance-based communicative constraint can affect the conventionalization of linguistic knowledge. The study bridges the gap between random networks (...)

Embedded Metaphor and Perspective Shifting.Gong Chen & Graham Stevens - 2024 - Croatian Journal of Philosophy 24 (71):255-272.
Non-cognitivism is an approach to metaphor that denies the existence of any metaphorical meanings. A metaphor’s only meaning is its literal meaning. The interpretation of metaphor, on this approach, does not consist in metaphorical contents being communicated by being either semantically encoded or pragmatically communicated. Rather, metaphor operates in an entirely non-linguistic way that does not require the postulation of such meanings. Metaphors cause people to see connections, even to grasp new thoughts, but they do not do so by meaning (...)

The Influence of Face on Online Purchases: Evidence From China.Gong Sun, Famei Shen & Xinyi Ma - 2021 - Frontiers in Psychology 12.
This study examines the influence of an indigenous concept – face on online purchases in China. Specifically, we test the mediating role of materialism and the moderating role of price consciousness. We conduct a survey of 315 Chinese consumers. The results demonstrate that consumers tend to make online purchases to satisfy some facets of their materialistic needs and then gain face, especially for those highly conscious of price. The current research can help both scholars and practitioners better understand Chinese consumers (...)

Characteristics of lixue in Qing Dynasty.Gong Shuduo - 2007 - Frontiers of Philosophy in China 2 (1):1-24.
The lixue 理学 (learning of the Neo-Confucian principles) of the Qing Dynasty followed the tradition of lixue in the Song, Yuan and Ming dynasties, but it had its own characteristics. First, there was no primary direction and core train of ideas. Second, there was no creativity and the emphasis was made on ethics. Third, after the Opium War, the lixue of the Qing Dynasty was influenced by Western culture, partly resisting and partly integrating with the latter. Fourth, the tradition of (...)

Is degree abstraction a parameter or a universal? Evidence from Mandarin Chinese.Ying Gong & Elizabeth Coppock - 2024 - Natural Language Semantics 32 (2):177-230.
Mandarin Chinese, along with Japanese, Yorùbá, Mòoré, and Samoan, has been argued to lack ‘degree abstraction’, a configuration at LF involving lambda abstraction over a degree variable. These languages are claimed to have a negative setting for a hypothesized ‘Degree Abstraction Parameter’. Recent work, however, has argued for degree abstraction in Japanese and Yorùbá, and degree abstraction has been detected in a number of additional languages. Could it in fact be universal? Here, we focus on the case of Mandarin, and (...)

  28. Virtue Ethics and Modern Society—A Response to the Thesis of the Modern Predicament of Virtue Ethics.Gong Qun - 2010 - Frontiers of Philosophy in China 5 (2):255-265.
The revival of modern Western virtue ethics presents the question of whether or not virtue ethics is appropriate for modern society. Ethicists believe that virtue ethics came from traditional society, to which it conforms so well. The appearance of the market economy and a utilitarian spirit, together with society’s diversification, is a sign that modern society has arrived. This also indicates a transformation in the moral spirit. But modern society has not made virtues less important, and even as modern life (...)

Will “Green” Parents Have “Green” Children? The Relationship Between Parents’ and Early Adolescents’ Green Consumption Values.Yanping Gong, Jian Li, Julan Xie, Long Zhang & Qiuyin Lou - 2021 - Journal of Business Ethics 179 (2):369-385.
Green consumption values have been shown to motivate consumers to engage in green consumption practices. However, surprisingly little research has examined how green consumption values develop in young people. In the current study, we employed ecological socialization theory as a framework to investigate the process by which parents’ green consumption values shape similar values in their young adolescents. In Study 1, data from 722 Chinese families that included an early adolescent showed that both mothers’ and fathers’ green consumption values were (...)

The Development of Cognitive Reflection in China.Tianwei Gong, Andrew G. Young & Andrew Shtulman - 2021 - Cognitive Science 45 (4):e12966.
Cognitive reflection is the tendency to override an intuitive response so as to engage in the reflection necessary to derive a correct response. Here, we examine the emergence of cognitive reflection in a culture that values nonanalytic thinking styles, Chinese culture. We administered a child‐friendly version of the cognitive reflection test, the CRT‐D, to 130 adults and 111 school‐age children in China and compared performance on the CRT‐D to several measures of rational thinking (belief bias syllogisms, base rate sensitivity, denominator (...)

On March 16, 2007, the Property Law ( Wuquan fa) was finally passed by the People's Congress of the People's Republic of China (PRC) after numerous readings and revisions on large and small scales over the past fourteen years. For the first time in the judicial history of China, a law was passed formally and explicitly legitimizing the ownership of private property. In the past, only public property was legally protected and such public ownership served as a foundational concept of (...)

    (1 other version)Global Justice: A Utopia and Concern of Humanitarianism.Gong Qun - 2019 - Yearbook for Eastern and Western Philosophy 2019 (4):39-54.
Global justice or the lack thereof has internal connections with global poverty. Global justice is an ideal pursuit of cosmopolitanism, which regards basic human needs as its rightful object. The right to life, from the point of view of global justice, is the most fundamental in the list of Human Rights. International anarchy and the current international economic order, however, cast a utopian shadow on the realization of this right when we consider the de facto institutions and the ostensible goal (...)

Online financial service is an essential part of consumption services provided by companies in modern society. It is vital to figure out the underlying mechanisms that influence online financial service use of college students in China, which is seldom explored. Drawing on the theory of planned behavior, this study explores the effect of personality traits and its joint effect with attitude on online financial service use of college students. Moreover, we examined the interaction effects of key variables in TPB in (...)

The Lineage Theory of the Regional Variation of Individualism/Collectivism in China.Weigang Gong, Meng Zhu, Burak Gürel & Tian Xie - 2021 - Frontiers in Psychology 11.
China has undergone a rapid process of modernization since 1949. The modernization process has accelerated with the development of the market economy and rural-to-urban migration after the 1980s. Nevertheless, Chinese regions still exhibit substantial differences in terms of individualist/collectivist cultural orientations. The rice theory and the climato-economic theory have attempted to explain this variation by analyzing provincial-level data. Based on a quantitative analysis of more granular, county-level variables spanning from the early 1990s until 2010, we offer an alternative account of (...)

Why do groups cooperate more than individuals to reduce risks?Min Gong, Jonathan Baron & Howard Kunreuther - 2013 - Theory and Decision 75 (1):101-116.
Previous research has discovered a curious phenomenon: groups cooperate less than individuals in a deterministic prisoner’s dilemma game, but cooperate more than individuals when uncertainty is introduced into the game. We conducted two studies to examine three possible processes that might drive groups to be more cooperative than individuals in reducing risks: group risk concern, group cooperation expectation, and pressure to conform to social norms. We found that ex post guilt aversion and ex-post blame avoidance cause group members to be (...)

As a social issue of widespread concern, work-to-family conflict has been found to adversely affect employees’ work and family lives. The current research linked employees’ work-to-family conflict to disruptions in parenting and in turn to adolescents’ materialism. In Study 1, two-wave data from 207 Chinese dual-career families that included an adolescent in junior high school showed that both men’s and women’s work-to-family conflict was positively correlated with material rewards parenting, and this positive relationship was stronger when parenting daughters than sons.
