Climate change is seen as a super-wicked problem (Fabre 2021), the uncertainties of which are linked to the predictability of climate change and the consequences of actions taken to limit it. Our article proposes to shed light on the conceptions of French students in their final year of high school in relation to this problem and its uncertainties, based on a questionnaire distributed to around 100 students. The analysis allows us to discuss the conditions of possibility of a transformative and (...) critical education. In response to the catastrophist scenarios and the feelings of powerlessness and anxiety that are very prevalent in this corpus, the importance of an education that gives room to uncertainties emerges. Given the lack of knowledge about safety and efficacy of many treatments for children, pediatric clinical trials are important, but recruitment for pediatric research is difficult. Little is known about children's perspective on participating in trials. The purpose of this study was to understand the experiences and motivations of young people who took part in clinical trials. This is a qualitative interview study of 25 young people aged 10–23 who were invited to take part in clinical trials. Interviews were audio (...) or video recorded and analyzed using framework analysis. Young peoples' motivations were both personal benefit and helping others. Both incentives appeared to be more complex than expected. We introduce the terms “network of exchange” and “intergenerational solidarity” to describe these motivations. To improve recruitment, professionals should be more open about research opportunities, provide better information, and give young people feedback after the trial has ended. (shrink)

Eco-anxiety increasingly weighs on (young) people’s mental health and impacts their life choices. This commentary zooms in on socio-ecological reproductive concerns with the aim to provide room for collective doubts on this individual choice, and to normalize emotions of anxiety, fear, grief, guilt, and regret, among many others, because of it.

This book consists of conversations with five founding scholars - Karen Barad, Astrid Schrader, Magdalena Gorska, Ericka Johnson and Elizabeth De Freitas - regarding their research practices inspired by agential realism. They are conversations focusing on how they think and analyze empirical material through agential realism in combination with other thinkers (e.g. Deleuze, Derrida, Butler, Haraway, Châtelet and Suchman). The conversations offer entry points to agential realism and the conduct of research practices and open up spaces for learning about research (...) processes, agential realism and agential realist concepts for students and scholars of qualitative research. Despite major improvements in the conceptual and functional approach of disability, some fundamental inequities remain. Among them, lacks in health access and health status are of importance both for research and public health policies. Particularly as regards intellectual disability (ID), in which major inequities remain and contrast with specific and sometimes increased somatic and mental health needs. In this context, health promotion initiatives designed for adult with intellectual disabilities should succeed to integrate several variables such as a holistic view of (...) health, the importance of individual-environmental interaction, as well as the concept of self-determination. These variables have indeed been largely documented as key component in the field of ID. The purpose of this study is to analyse the available literature on health promotion for adults with ID as regards the integration of these variables, both in form and content. The results suggest several lacks in the conception of health promotion initiatives; such as an over-focus on individual abilities at the expense of environmental actions, and low consideration for the concept of global health or the volitional dimension of behaviours. Therefore, once more pointing the gap between knowledge and practice in the field of ID. Results are discussed in terms of future direction for research and clinical practice. (shrink)

An important source for 19th century church history is conserved in the Acta Episcoporum Brugensium of the Archive of the Diocese of Bruges. The Acta of Bishop Jean-Baptist Malou contain the transcripts of some letters and a rather lengthy report, dated July 10, 1852: Notes sur les erreurs nouvelles, contraires à la religion révélée, à ses dogmes, à sa morale. Ecoles qui méritent une attention spéciale. It appears that this text was to be sent to the Consultors on the (...) Fornari Commission in Rome, who at that time were preparing a draft for the Bull on the Immaculate Conception, and who wanted to insert a solemn condemnation of modern errors. Towards that end, the Commission contacted several outstanding scholars all over Europe. Though the identity of these scholars is known, the response of the marquis Donoso Cortes was the only one known until now. The particular contribution of this article is to also make known the full text of the response of the Bishop of Bruges, and the related correspondence. In addition, when compared with the documentation already known, these documents help to clarify the rather confusing history of the earliest efforts to draft a Syllabus Errorum. For example, it appears that immediately after the revolution of 1848, some of the scholars contacted by the Commission in June of 1852, and by Fornari in August of the same year, were not prepared at that time to devote their efforts to a condemnation of errors. Secondly, it seems that a substantial discussion of what was intended to be the second chapter of the Bull unduly delayed the proclamation of the dogma of the Immaculate Conception, and so the Syllabus project was subsequently postponed.
