These papers were presented at a panel, organized by us and chaired by Liz Wilson, on ‘Women’s Leadership and Monastic Organizations in Therav?da Buddhist Traditions’, at the 2008 American Academy of Religion meeting, Chicago. Here, we bring together articles that examine the roots of the teachings on nuns in P?li literature with others which investigate issues relating to contemporary Therav?da nuns, as well as an analysis of relevant debates in ancient China. The objective of these papers is to contribute (...)

René Guénon and the heart of the Grail.S. Wilson - 2015 - Temenos Academy 18:146-167.
This article examines the French esoteric scholar René Guénon's concepts of tradition, the Centre and the primordial state, and the symbols which he argues body them forth. In particular it discusses the symbolism of the heart and the Grail in Guénon's work. It uses a close reading of the earliest Grail romances to develop a critique of Guénon, and in particular of his concept of tradition and his attitude towards Christianity.

The Significance for Psychology of Bradley’s Humean View of the Self.Fred Wilson - 1999 - Bradley Studies 5 (1):5-44.
James Mark Baldwin was one of the leaders in the new experimental psychology that developed at the end of the 19th century. In a discussion of F. H. Bradley’s view of the self, he makes an apparently odd remark. Baldwin describes Bradley’s account of the active self, the self of volition and desire. In particular, he refers to Bradley’s account of the feeling of self activity. On the latter, certain contents defining the ‘I’ remain constant, while there is change in (...)

Aim The aim is to understand current research into the impact of undergraduate nursing education on the development of professional values. Healthcare professionals as gatekeepers in research involving refugee survivors of sexual torture: An examination of the ethical issues.Roghieh Dehghan & James Wilson - 2019 - Developing World Bioethics 19 (4):215-223.
This paper examines the ethical issues that arise when healthcare providers act as gatekeepers to research involving vulnerable populations. Traumatised refugees serve as an example of this subset of research participants. Highlighting the particular vulnerabilities of this group, we argue that specific ethical considerations are required that go beyond the conventional research approaches. While gatekeeping responds to some of those vulnerabilities, it risks wronging through unwarranted paternalism. Instead, we will propose that a relational ethics of justice and care serves as (...)

The evolution of policy arguments in teachers' negotiations.LindaL Putnam, SteveR Wilson & DudleyB Turner - 1990 - Argumentation 4 (2):129-152.
Argument is a critical component in policy deliberations. In this study, negotiation is viewed as a type of policy deliberation, one characterized by attack and defense of proposals, interdependence between disputants, and mixed motives of cooperation and competition. Argument in negotiation, then, functions as a reason-giving activity to enact policy. Employing a category system based on rhetorical stasis, the researchers examine whether bargainers specialize in their use of argument types and whether this specialization remains consistent throughout a teacher-school board negotiation (...)

    Repeating, Not Simply Recollecting, Repetition: On Kierkegaard’s Ethical Exercises.T. Wilson Dickinson - 2011 - Sophia 50 (4):657-675.
This essay argues for a formative, and not simply abstract, aspect to the philosophy of religion by attending to the practices of writing employed in Søren Kierkegaard’s pseudonymous work Repetition . By locating this text within an ethical tradition that focuses upon the practices that form subjects, rather than simply the formulation of a theory, its seemingly literary performances can be viewed as exercises. In particular, this text deploys and transforms the Stoic practices of self writing, in the form of (...)

    First-order recognizability in finite and pseudofinite groups.Yves Cornulier & John S. Wilson - 2020 - Journal of Symbolic Logic 85 (2):852-867.
It is known that there exists a first-order sentence that holds in a finite group if and only if the group is soluble. Here it is shown that the corresponding statements with ‘solubility’ replaced by ‘nilpotence’ and ‘perfectness’, among others, are false. These facts present difficulties for the study of pseudofinite groups. However, a very weak form of Frattini’s theorem on the nilpotence of the Frattini subgroup of a finite group is proved for pseudofinite groups.

Sleep and memory: Definitions, terminology, models, and predictions?Jonathan K. Foster & Andrew C. Wilson - 2005 - Behavioral and Brain Sciences 28 (1):71-72.
In this target article, Walker seeks to clarify the current state of knowledge regarding sleep and memory. Walker's review represents an impressively heuristic attempt to synthesize the relevant literature. In this commentary, we question the focus on procedural memory and the use of the term “consolidation,” and we consider the extent to which empirically testable predictions can be derived from Walker's model.

Algumas reflexões sobre o filisteu da formação (Bildungsphilister) e o espírito livre em nossos estabelecimentos de ensino.Wilson Antonio Frezzatti Jr - 2022 - Cadernos Nietzsche 43 (3):91-104.
The purpose of this paper is, in the context of the distinction between Nietzsche's notions of cultural philistine (Bildungsphilister) and free spirit (Freigeist), to discuss which of these two types we, professors at Brazilian higher education institutions, are more similar. The philistine is the opposite of the genuine man of culture and the artist. The free spirit, on the other hand, is the exception, he is one who is disconnected from the values and habits in force, he doesn't cling to (...)
