Medical school curricula, although traditionally and historically dominated by science, have generally accepted, appreciated, and welcomed the inclusion of literature over the past several decades. Recent concerns about medical professional formation have led to discussions about the specific role and contribution of literature and stories. In this article, we demonstrate how professionalism and the study of literature can be brought into relationship through critical and interrogative interactions based in the literary skill of close reading. Literature in medicine can question the (...) meaning of “professionalism” itself, thereby resisting standardization in favor of diversity method and of outcome. Literature can also actively engage learners with questions about the human condition, providing a larger context within which to consider professional identity formation. Our fundamental contention is that, within a medical education framework, literature is highly suited to assist learners in questioning conventional thinking and assumptions about various dimensions of professionalism. Halliday’s theory of grammatical metaphor has been quite influential among scholars who study structural approaches to language but has received little attention among researchers in cognitive linguistics. In this paper we summarize the aspects of Halliday’s approach that are most relevant to cognitive linguists, and show how key aspects of grammatical metaphor are related to the analysis of lexical and conceptual metaphors. Using an example of scientific writing analyzed by Halliday as well as examples from discourse previously subjected to conceptual (...) metaphor analysis, we show how the two approaches might usefully be combined to yield new insights in the analysis of naturally occurring discourse. Pendant la guerre indo-pakistanaise, les États-Unis ont lié le sort de leur allié à la crédibilité de la puissance américaine. Le président Richard Nixon et son conseiller en matière de sécurité nationale, Henry Kissinger, utilisent le langage du genre pour exprimer leur conception de la crédibilité américaine, une crédibilité construite par et à travers ce langage. En suivant une approche sensible au genre inspirée des approches féministes poststructuralistes, cet article analyse les conversations enregistrées dans lesquelles Nixon et Kissinger (...) ont formulé des mesures politiques risquées afin de paraître « durs » ou de « se comporter comme des mecs » à l’apogée du conflit de 1971. La conception de la crédibilité de Nixon et Kissinger a produit une base extrêmement instable et dangereuse pour la conduite d’une politique étrangère qui aspirait à maintenir l’équilibre des forces entre les États-Unis et l’Union soviétique. È indubbio che la comunicazione politica si rifaccia al simbolismo e al linguaggio delle favole; non necessariamente per occultare la realtà, ma più direttamente per esprimere con maggiore efficacia il suo messaggio. Alle celebri favole (...) di 'Biancaneve', 'Cenerentola', 'Il brutto anatroccolo' sono ricorsi infatti uomini politici del calibro di Berlusconi, Prodi, Nixon, Carter, Mitterrand e partiti quali la Democrazia Cristiana; l'hanno fatto per conquistare voti ma anche per attivare ampi meccanismi di consenso che attingessero direttamente dall'inconscio collettivo. Le conseguenze - ammonisce l'autore - possono essere molto serie, come nel caso dell'attuale politica americana che ha portato la manipolazione e l'inganno a essere riconosciuti come tratti identitari della presidenza di George W. Depuis leur naissance aux États-Unis au début des années 1980, les éthiques féministes du care ont fréquemment puisé dans l’œuvre de Simone Weil afin de théoriser les qualités morales nécessaires pour le soin – en particulier, l’attention. Toutefois, la pertinence de Weil pour penser le travail est rarement considérée par les théoricien.ne.s du care. Si le care peut être compris à la fois comme disposition/qualité morale et comme activité/travail pratique, nous souhaitons montrer la pertinence du corpus weilien pour penser ces (...) deux facettes. Nous soulignerons, avec Weil, que le bien-être au travail requiert d’accorder une importance accrue au rythme et à l’autonomie temporels ainsi qu’aux dynamiques entourant la considération sociale et les responsabilités. Nous soutiendrons aussi brièvement que le concept weilien de « malheur » préfigure ceux de « mort lente » (Berlant) et de « violence lente » (Nixon). (shrink)

La beauté ne continue-t-elle pas, pourtant, de faire l'objet d'une irréductible expérience qui, modestement mais résolument, (...) féconde toujours l'existence humaine, dans sa dimension proprement esthétique, certes, mais aussi dans les domaines éthique (comme en amour et en amitié) et socio-politique (dans le partage du sensible nécessaire à tout sens commun)? C'est à redonner la parole et droit de cité à cette expérience de la beauté que nous espérons ici contribuer, en dialogue avec les Anciens et les Modernes, en nous instruisant à la fois des principes de la philosophie et des révélations de la littérature et des autres arts, comme de la vie la plus quotidienne. In this chapter, we offer an account of fear and risk in anticipation of catastrophe. We draw on the narrative response to the Mount Enta volcano in medieval Sicily to frame an evaluation of how fear can be seen to impact the understanding of risk when the event of that risk is the catastrophic suffering of an entire community.
