Celem podjętych rozważań jest ustalenie cech charakterystycznych badań filozofii polskiej prowadzonych przez o. Romana Darowskiego SJ (1935– 2017). Głównym materiałem źródłowym są jego publikacje oraz ich recenzje. Literatura przedmiotowa jest nieliczna. Przy powyższym zadaniu naturalnym sposobem postępowania (metodą) wydaje się prześledzenie informacji biograficznych i publikacji autora, by na podstawie uzyskanego zarysu twórczości ustalić właściwe jej cechy oraz sformułować narzucające się uwagi. Artykuł zawiera przegląd najważniejszych prac Romana Darowskiego dotyczących filozofii polskiej. Zachowuje układ chronologiczny, z niewielkimi odstępstwami. Informacje biograficzne wskazywały czas (...) i okoliczności powstania niektórych omawianych tekstów. Poczynione ustalenia potwierdzają tezę o wybitnych osiągnięciach Romana Darowskiego w badaniu historii filozofii polskich jezuitów od XVI do XX stulecia. Dowodzą też, że wskazał i udokumentował on w licznych publikacjach najważniejsze dokonania jezuitów pracujących na ziemiach leżących w granicach dawnej Rzeczypospolitej. Ponadto przez lata aktywności zawodowej wypracował i zastosował z powodzeniem oryginalne metody i program badawczy, a także nakreślił kierunki działań na przyszłość. (shrink)

We introduce the notion of a Minkowskian Branching Structure ("MBS" for short). Then we prove some results concerning the phenomenon of funny business in its finitary and infinitary variants.

We obtain several game characterizations of Baire 1 functions between Polish spaces _X_, _Y_ which extends the recent result of V. Kiss. Then we propose similar characterizations for equi-Bare 1 families of functions. Also, using related ideas, we give game characterizations of Baire measurable and Lebesgue measurable functions.

This paper aims to inquire whether an analysis of the concept of law is an exercise of analysis in its modest or immodest form. Our inquiry suggests that the Jacksonian distinction between modest and immodest conceptual analysis, so eagerly applied by many legal scholars, is inapplicable to analyzing a specific part of the concept of law. The crux of our argument lies in the relation between the folk theory of law and the content of the developed concept of law. As (...) an artifact concept, the concept of law must depend on the pre-existing content of the folk conception of law (which we term the ‘foundational folk theory’). This part of folk theory determines the collective intentionality necessary to bring an institutional artifact, such as law, into existence. A large part of the argument for this conclusion depends on the acceptance of a realist and functional, post-Searlean theory of artifactual types. (shrink)

Studies show that rejection increases negative affect and aggression and decreases helping behavior toward the excluder. Less is known about emotions and behavior after rejection by a friend for someone else. In two experimental studies (N = 101 and N = 169), we tested the predictions that rejection would feel worse in a close relationship but would result in less aggression and more reconnecting behavior, especially when the reasons for rejection were unknown. The results of study 1 showed that, as (...) expected, among acquaintances, more aggression was noted only after comparative rejection, but among strangers, aggression was also observed after rejection with no stated reason. Negative feelings toward a new acquaintance were only marginally stronger than those toward a stranger in study 1, but study 2 confirmed that rejection by a best friend, and especially comparative rejection by a friend, felt worse than other conditions. Study 2 also showed that reconnecting behavior was more likely to dominate over aggressive behavior between people in close relationships than between strangers. The results are discussed mostly in light of the multimotive model of rejection. (shrink)

The paper explores the topic of organizational routines from a philosophical vantage point to see how the philosophy of action may help improve its understanding in organizational research. The main goal is to show the distinctive complexity of the intentional picture of routines. In this respect, the paper clarifies the interrelations between psychological habits and routines and describes similarities and differences between them. It also highlights the special place of mindfulness as a psycho-cognitive mechanism of action meta-control in intentional explanations (...) of routine complexity. (shrink)

The paper discusses the origin of two Germanic terms for ‘Atlantic herring, _Clupea harengus _L.’. The Proto-Germanic noun _*siled- _m. ‘herring’, attested in most North Germanic languages (e.g. ON. _sild_, Far. _síld_, OSv. _sild_, Sv. _sill_, Norw. _sil_), cannot be treated as inherited. It seems to represent a Saami (or Laponian) borrowing, cf. Saa. (Northern) _sâlled_, (Lule) _sallēt _‘herring’.

We extend results of Elekes and Máthé on monotone Borel hulls to an abstract setting of measurable space with negligibles. During the last two decades, the literature in management studies has shown a significant increase in interest in the theory of business models, and there has been wide-ranging discussion about the definitions of those models. These studies and discussions have provoked questions about the scientific nature of the foundations of business models. This article attempts to verify whether the proposed constructions of business models meet the objectives of abduction, which is, according to the methodology of science, one of the recognised (...) methods to verify the scientific nature of created theories. The verification was performed by using the method of the Scientific Research Tradition by Larry Laudan. The result unequivocally confirmed that the theory of business models that is created and defined based on management sciences falls under the scope of ScRT. It can be said that according to the methodology of science, the business models theory proposed on the basis of management science points to abduction as a tool that allows for a deeper understanding of the mechanisms of formation and opens a new way of interpretation than is the case when using deduction or induction. Już sam tytuł recenzowanego tomu ewokuje przemyślenia dotyczące wielkich sporów moralnych z przeszłości i skłania do postawienia pytania o ich aktualność. W konsekwencji tego pojawia się kolejne pytanie: czy prowadzony przez autorów i redaktorów tomu dyskurs zamyka się w obszarze historii (w szczególności historii filozofii), ewentualnie teoretycznych dywagacji intelektualnych, czy też posiada wymiar praktyczny? W mojej ocenie praca posiada walory teoretyczny i praktyczny. Przygotował ją interdyscyplinarny zespół dwudziestu autorek i autorów (z uzasadnioną dominacją liczebną filozofek i filozofów), którzy przygotowali dwadzieścia (...) esejów, mierząc się z szerokim spektrum tematów. W założeniu mamy więc do czynienia z niezwykle ambitnym projektem. Wnikliwa lektura tomu potwierdza, że cele, które postawili przed sobą jego redaktorzy i autorzy, zostały z powodzeniem zrealizowane. Oddany właśnie do rąk czytelników tom pt. _Spory moralne_ powinien znaleźć się w bibliotekach szkolnych (mam na myśli szkoły średnie) i akademickich. Może również stanowić źródło wiedzy i inspiracji dla ludzi pióra, dla duchowieństwa, dziennikarzy, prawników i polityków. (shrink)

In this interview, Tomasz Zarębski speaks with Allan Janik, co-author of _Wittgenstein’s Vienna_ (1973, with Stephen Toulmin), on the occasion of the 50 th anniversary of the publication of this pathbreaking book. The conversation concerns the circumstances, motivations and reasons for his undertaking the work on the book, as well as its reception and place in Wittgenstein scholarship. A large part of the discussion refers to his perspective of Wittgenstein, Toulmin’s philosophical writings, and Janik’s own vision of philosophy. My paper builds on the conceptual tools from three interrelated philosophical debates that—as I believe—may help structure important if chaotic discussions about surrogates for living human brains and resolve some practical issues related to regulatory matters. In particular, I refer to the discussions about the “moral precautionary principle” in research ethics (Koplin and Wilkinson 2019); about normative uncertainty in ethics (MacAskill, Bykvist, and Ord 2020), and about the inductive risk problem for animal welfare scientists (Birch 2018). I elucidate upon the (...) possible meanings of the phrase “a too good human brain surrogate” used by Henry T. Greely (2021), and I demonstrate that the evaluation of the practical and regulatory implications of the “goodness” of such surrogates created for research purposes should be sensitive to the possible consequences of two types of errors: the under-attribution and over-attribution of moral status to such beings. Many authors writing about this topic (including Greely 2021, but see also, e.g., Koplin and Savulescu 2019) concentrate only on the first type of error, neglecting the negative consequences of the second type, i.e., over-attribution. Mit der Entstehung der Collage wurde eine Kulturrevolution in Gang gesetzt, die sich heute in vielen einzelnen Verästelungen zeigt und die dazu geführt hat, dass man die Kunst mit anderen Augen sehen muss. Das Urheberrecht hat nach wie vor in vielen Teilen auf diese kulturelle Bewegung nicht reagiert. Dies erkennend, hat es sich die vorliegende Dissertation zum Ziel gesetzt, einzelne urheberrechtliche Problemschwerpunkte am konkreten Beispiel der Collage zu diskutieren. So werden u.a. Fragen nach einem zeitgenössischen Werkbegriff, nach dem richtigen Umgang (...) mit der erlaubnisfreien Nachschöpfung durch Dritte sowie der Urheberpersönlichkeitsrechte aufgegriffen. Dabei wird eine grundlegende Betrachtung vorgenommen, deren Grundsätze nicht alleine auf den Umgang mit der Collage beschränkt sind, sondern deren Aussagekraft von zukunftweisender Natur sind. Denn gerade mit Blick auf die zunehmende Technologisierung der Mittel, die es Jedermann erlaubt, unter Zuhilfenahme von vorgefundenem, urheberrechtlich geschützten Material tätig zu werden, wachsen die angesprochenen Probleme weiter und stellen das Urheberrecht, mehr noch als das heute der Fall ist, vor große Herausforderungen und Belastungen. Nie należy również ułatwiać sobie sprawy z Bożym ukryciem przez wprowadzanie rozwiązań, które sprawiają, że napięcie związane z problemem ukrytości znika lub zostaje złagodzone. Zaproponowane przeze mnie w książce Źródło i noc. Wprowadzenie do współczesnego absconditeizmu rozwiązanie, które nazwałem absconditeizmem, jest próbą zmierzenia się z problemem ukrytości w jego najmocniejszej możliwej postaci. Rozważam ten problem, biorąc pod uwagę również najmocniejszą wersję teizmu, którą określa (...) się jako klasyczny teizm. Artykuł stanowi łączną odpowiedź na teksty, których autorami są Maciej Bała, Ryszard Mordarski oraz Marek Słomka. Odnoszę się do pojawiających się w wyżej wymienionych tekstach krytyk, doprecyzowuję moje stanowisko oraz przedstawiam racje, dla których uważam, iż proponowany przeze mnie absconditeizm, stanowiący poważne i unikające ułatwień ujęcie problemu ukrytości, jest właściwym sposobem podejmowania tego zagadnienia. This book uses the formal semantics of counterfactual conditionals to analyze the problem of non-locality in quantum mechanics. Counterfactual conditionals enter the analysis of quantum entangled systems in that they enable us to precisely formulate the locality condition that purports to exclude the existence of causal interactions between spatially separated parts of a system. They also make it possible to speak consistently about alternative measuring settings, and to explicate what is meant by quantum property attributions. The book develops the possible-world (...) semantics of quantum counterfactuals using David Lewis's famous approach as a starting point but modifying it significantly in order to achieve compatibility with the demands of the special theory of relativity as well as quantum mechanics. There have been several attempts to use counterfactuals semantics to strengthen Bell's theorem and its cognates such as the GHZ and Hardy theorems. These are critically evaluated in the book. Finally, a counterfactual reconstruction of the EPR argument and Bell's theorem is proposed that sheds a new light on their philosophical consequences regarding the relations between realism and local causation. Jeden z kontrargumentów do argumentu z ukrycia Boga, który zyskuje popularność w ostatnich latach, odnosi się do niepojętości Boga. Jeśli Bóg jest transcendentny, twierdzą zwolennicy tego argumentu (tj. Michael Rea i Roger Pouivet), to nie wiemy, czy Boska miłość wyraża się w otwarciu na osobiste relacje ze skończonymi istotami, jak twierdzi pierwsza przesłanka argumentu o ukrytości. Oskarżają J. L. Schellenberga o kształtowanie koncepcji Boga na wzór współczesnych koncepcji człowieka. W odpowiedzi wskazuję na fakt, że chociaż w pismach Schellenberga istnieje niebezpieczeństwo (...) antropomorfizmu, personalistyczny teizm musi zaakceptować pierwszą przesłankę argumentu z ukrycia. Uzasadniam swoją tezę, odwołując się do zasady scholastycznej, która pozwala przypisać Bogu wszystkie doskonałości, i argumentując na rzecz tezy, że osobowość (rozumiana w kategoriach racjonalności i wolności) jest jedną z doskonałości.
