Two Wrongs Make a ‘Right’? Exploring the Ethical Calculus of Earnings Management Before Large Labor Dismissals.Ionela Andreicovici, Nava Cohen, Silvia Ferramosca & Alessandro Ghio - 2020 - Journal of Business Ethics 172 (2):379-405.
This paper examines whether firms strategically legitimize large labor dismissals by performing ex-ante downward earnings management. We further assess whether the effect is larger under stakeholder pressure and whether these practices influence the external perception of firms’ behavior. As laying off employees without an economic reason is perceived as a breach of the social contract, stakeholders pressure firms to provide economic justification for LLDs. We argue that firms strategically legitimize LLDs by artificially worsening their financial performance through downward earnings management. (...)

Tactile Enumeration and Embodied Numerosity Among the Deaf.Shachar Hochman, Zahira Z. Cohen, Mattan S. Ben-Shachar & Avishai Henik - 2020 - Cognitive Science 44 (8):e12880.
Representations of the fingers are embodied in our cognition and influence performance in enumeration tasks. Among deaf signers, the fingers also serve as a tool for communication in sign language. Previous studies in normal hearing (NH) participants showed effects of embodiment (i.e., embodied numerosity) on tactile enumeration using the fingers of one hand. In this research, we examined the influence of extensive visuo‐manual use on tactile enumeration among the deaf. We carried out four enumeration task experiments, using 1–5 stimuli, on (...)

Conflicts over Control and Use of Medical Records at the New York Hospital before the Standardization Movement.Eugenia L. Siegler & Andrew B. Cohen - 2011 - Journal of Law, Medicine and Ethics 39 (4):640-648.
Medical records contain important clues about the history of medicine. These documents, which ostensibly describe the course of a patient's illness, are “unique constructions that allow us to observe the social and technical structure of contemporary healing.” As such, the 21st-century hospital medical record reflects the many components of inpatient care: medical interventions, billing, legal documentation, research, and education. It is comprised of a wide array of elements: professionals' notes; vital signs and other descriptive information; laboratory data and test results; (...)

Readings in comparative health law and bioethics.Nathan Cortez, I. Glenn Cohen & Timothy S. Jost (eds.) - 2019 - Durham, North Carolina: Carolina Academic Press.
Originally edited by Timothy Stoltzfus Jost, this text examines how different countries around the world approach the same challenges in health care law and ethics: how to finance care for as many people as possible; how to ensure quality care; how to best secure patients' rights; how to regulate abortion, end of life decision making, and assisted reproduction; and how to manage infectious diseases, tobacco use, and human subject research. The new edition considers a broader array of countries, particularly from (...)

Experimental and theoretical evidence for a similar localization of words encoded through different modalities.Sébastien Dubé & Henri Cohen - 1999 - Behavioral and Brain Sciences 22 (2):285-286.
In his target article, Pulvermüller addresses the issue of word localization in the brain. It is not clear, however, how cell assemblies are localized in the case of sensory deprivation. Pulvermüller's claim is that words learned via other modalities (i.e., sign languages) should be localized differently. It is argued, however, based on experimental and theoretical ground, that they should be found in a similar place.

    The contribution of long-term memory and the role of frontal-lobe systems in on-line processing.Jennifer D. Ryan & Neal J. Cohen - 2003 - Behavioral and Brain Sciences 26 (6):756-756.
Ruchkin et al. ascribe a pivotal role to long-term memory representations and binding within working memory. Here we focus on the interaction of working memory and long-term memory in supporting on-line representations of experience available to guide on-going processing, and we distinguish the role of frontal-lobe systems from what the hippocampus contributes to relational long-term memory binding.

Why asymmetries in color space cannot save functionalism.Jonathan Cohen - 1999 - Behavioral and Brain Sciences 22 (6):950-950.
Palmer's strategy of saving functionalism by constraining spectrum inversions cannot succeed because (1) there remain many nontrivial transformations not ruled out by Palmer's constraints, and (2) the constraints involved are due to the contingent makeup of our visual systems, and are therefore not available for use by functionalists.

    Peter Mew on justice and capitalism.G. A. Cohen - 1986 - Inquiry: An Interdisciplinary Journal of Philosophy 29 (1-4):315 – 323.
Section I argues, against Peter Mew, that, since people create nothing ex nihilo, everything now privately owned incorporates something that once was not, and that this has important consequences for distributive justice. Section II defends the ?diachronic? approach to distributive justice against Mew's charge that it is ?otiose?, and section III claims that beliefs about distributive justice have a big effect on political conflict in the real world. Section IV enters a few disagreements with Mew's account of the political ?quiescence? (...)

Spectacles of Realism: Body, Gender, Genre.Margaret Cohen & Christopher Prendergast - 1995
With particular reference to nineteenth-century French culture, the contributors explore the role realism has played in the social construction of gender and sexuality. Among their subjects are nineteenth-century physiologies, photographs, caricatures, and Balzac's Comedie humaine; the ethnographic claims of the Goncourts' naturalism and the historical claims of Zola's; and the allure of exotica displayed at new museums and international expositions.
