This paper focuses on the work of Czech aesthetician and ethnologist Josef Jedlička who describes ornament as a product of territorial rule. In his book The Ornament, Jedlička addresses the problem of ideological control of territorial repetition as an emergence of entropy. To understand Jedlička’s claims of entropic repetition, I propose introducing it in dialogue with Deleuze’s conception of repetition, in which differentiation is not an external but an internal rule of repetition. I argue that (...) class='Hi'>Jedlička’s conception of ornament as an externally imposed rule of senseless layering of imposed patterns allows us to understand the risk of social disconnection. In contrast, Deleuze’s account of territorial repetition as a production of erotic rhythm is based on the internal rule of differentiation, which allows us to see social connection as an ongoing variation assembled by desire. The philosophical consequences of these different approaches to repetition are further examined in their divergent readings of Franz Kafka’s work. (shrink)

This book presents a coherent philosophy of signs without postulating objects to which they refer or meanings which they express.

For Pieper, the study of tradition is anything but antiquarian. He begins with a consideration of tradition in a changing world and is well aware of the need to confront the all-too-common perception that "tradition" is nowadays irrelevant. On the basis of his profound knowledge of the Western philosophical tradition from Plato and Aristotle through Augustine, Boethius, Thomas Aquinas, and Descartes, to modern Existentialism and Marxism, Pieper is able to highlight the values established - and challenged - down through the (...) centuries. He sees the need to re-examine these values, to rid them of the false interpretations and misunderstandings that threaten to consign them to oblivion. He attempts to restate them in language which, in fact, not only reflects the clarity of his mind but also expresses his conviction that these values, freshly examined and understood, provide a sound basis for healthy living and for our survival against the dangers that pose a serious threat to the very existence of Western civilization. He illustrates these values by examining the contrast between an exponent of them, like Socrates, and an opportunist, like the Sophist Protagoras; between the man of principle and the nihilistic pragmatist. The book consists of a mixture of articles and speeches, produced by a man who, though often wooed by the academy, was not concerned with achieving personal status as an academic professor. He insisted, for the most part, in combining purely academic teaching with the education of teachers in teacher-training colleges. He would not be removed from close contact with "learners," and he remained a "learner" himself - from tradition. (shrink)

This title, which at first sight seems curious, shows Pieper's philosophical work as rooted in the basics. He takes his inspiration from Plato - and his Socrates - and Thomas Aquinas. With them, he is interested in philosophy as pure theory, the theoretical being precisely the non-practical. The philosophizer wants to know what all existence is fundamentally about, what "reality" "really" means. With Plato, Pieper eschews the use of language to convince an audience of anything which is not the truth. (...) If Plato was opposed to the sophists - among them the politicians - Pieper is likewise opposed to discourse that leads to the "use" of philosophy to bolster a totalitarian regime or any political or economic system. A fundamental issue for Pieper is "createdness." He sees this as the fundamental truth of our being - all being - and the fundamental virtue we can practice is the striving to live according to our perception of real truth in any given situation. The strength and attraction of Pieper's writing is its direct and intuitive character which is independent of abstract systematization. He advocates staying in touch with the "real" as we experience it deep within ourselves. Openness to the totality of being - in no matter what context being reveals itself - and the affirmation of all that is founded in this totality are central pillars of all his thinking. Given the "simplicity" of this stance, it is no surprise that much of it is communicated - and successfully - through his gift for illustration by anecdote. Like Plato, this philosopher is a story-teller and, like him, very readable. (shrink)

Der Mensch steht oft ratlos vor der zentralen Frage des Todes. Es bedarf deshalb immer wieder neuer Versuche, den menschlichen Tod aus dem gegebenen Denkhorizont zu verstehen. Diese Arbeit versucht, verschiedene philosophische und theologische Interpretationen des Todes aufzuarbeiten und zu zeigen, dass auch eine Antwort von Seiten des christlichen Glaubens nur im steten Gesprach zwischen Philosophie (im Vordringen zum Phanomen des Todes) und Theologie (im Ruckgriff auf die biblischen Quellen) gegeben werden kann.".

In der klassischen Metaphysik war der alle speziellen Aspekte der Wirklichkeit übergreifende Gesichtspunkt der des „Seins". Dem entspricht in Puntels Buch ein Theorierahmen für das uneingeschränkte „universe of discourse". Methodisch angemessen ist ihm ein nicht-fundamentalistisches kohärentiell-reflexives Begreifen, dem sich auch die Sache selbst in eben dieser Struktur darstellt, nämlich als Beziehungseinheit von Begriff und Wirklichkeit, von Semantik und Ontologie, woraus sich sowohl eine an der Sprache orientierte Sicht der Dinge ergibt als auch eine mit dem Ganzen koextensive, also sich selbst (...) einschließende Geist-Strukur als reflexiver Maßstab allen Begreifens. Damit ist eine „prima philosophia" wiedergewonnen, die als methodisch-inhaltlicher Rahmen für das Begreifen der einzelnen Bereiche des Universums geeignet ist, nämlich der Naturphilosophie und Anthropologie, der Ethik und Ästhetik, der Geschichts- und Religionsphilosophie.In classical metaphysics, „Being" constituted the one viewpoint, which encompassed all particular aspects of reality. In Puntel's book, corresponding to this viewpoint is a theoretical framework for the unrestricted „universe of discourse." For him, a non fundamentalist comprehension of reality will be methodologically adequate, insofar as it is both coherent and reflexive. For only in and though the structure of this comprehending can the subject matter present itself as a relational unity of concept and reality, and of semantics and ontology. This structure will yield both a view of things that is linguistically orientated, as well as a mind-structure that is coextensive with the whole of reality, itself included. This mind-structure serves, then, as a reflexive criterion for all acts of comprehension. With this, the book regains a „prima philosophia," understood as a methodological and content-filled framework suitable for the comprehension of individual spheres of the universe, namely, the philosophy of nature and anthropology, ethics an aesthetics, as well as the philosophy of history and religion. De pessimistische zinnen, waarvan vele op het eerste gezicht klaar en begrijpelijk schijnen, blijken bij nadere beschouwing zinlooze woordenreeksen. De schrijver onderscheidt in zijn logische onderzoekingen drie stadia. In het eerste stadium -- dat van het naïeve begrijpen -- komen ons de pessimistische zinnen, vooral wanneer we in een slechte stemming zijn, zeer vertrouwd voor; in het volgende stadium -- dat der logische analyse -- ontpoppen zij zich als zinlooze woordverbindingen, terwijl in het derde stadium een verklaring wordt gezocht voor (...) het tegenstrijdig karakter der beide voorafgaande stadia. Schächter komt, na toepassing der logische analyse op eenige pessimistische zinnen, tot de conclusie, dat de uiterlijke vorm dezer zinnen misleidend is. Deze zinnen wekken namelijk den indruk, alsof de vertwijfeling, die door hen wordt uitgedrukt, op een gegeven toestand betrekking heeft. Zulk een pessimisme zou echter niet "echt" zijn, wijl daarbij toch stilzwijgend wordt verondersteld, dat een andere, mogelijke -- helaas niet werkelijke -- toestand begeerenswaardig zou zijn. Zoo is de verachting van alle aardsche goederen alleen bij die menschen echt, die rijk aan genotmogelijkheden zijn. Het pessimisme van arme menschen beteekent in den grond der zaak een bekrachtiging van de waardeering voor aardsche goederen. Van een symptomatisch gezichtspunt uit beschouwd, worden pessimistische uitingen niet als uitspraken aangezien, zooals de formuleeringen der omgangstaal en der wetenschap, die de een of andere zakelijke situatie beschrijven, maar als symptomen van bepaalde stemmıngen. Onze taal bestaat uit verschillende "lagen", tusschen welke "overeenkomsten" bestaan. Zoo kan men onderscheiden tusschen een -- met betrekking tot de "waardeeringen" -- neutrale taallaag en een laag, waarin alle dingen en verschijnselen met waardeeringsmaatstaven worden gemeten. Zoowel binnen de waardeeringsvrije, neutrale taal als binnen de waardeeringstaal onderscheidt Schächter een grammaticale en een toegepaste taal. Bij de analyse der taal stooten we op een laag, waarin alle gebeurtenissen uitsluitend van het gezichtspunt van den mensch uit worden beschouwd, waarin bij voorbeeld de zon geschapen is met het doel, den mensch goede diensten te bewijzen. Opvattingen als deze hebben tot het vaststellen van bepaalde regels geleid, die in onze taal, of liever in een van haar lagen, nog steeds gelden. Er zijn zinswendingen, die in de eene taallaag verboden, maar in een andere volkomen toelaatbaar zijn. Iedere taallaag heeft haar eigen regels, haar eigen logica. Binnen bepaalde taallagen hebben de pessimistische uitingen "zin". Het zijn de lagen, waarin vragen en zinnen worden "verstaan". Buiten deze lagen zijn de pessimistische formuleeringen zinloos.
