Medicine and Public Health, Ethics and Human Rights.Jonathan M. Mann - 2012 - Hastings Center Report 27 (3):6-13.
There is more to modern health than new scientific discoveries, the development of new technologies, or emerging or re‐emerging diseases. World events and experiences, such as the AIDS epidemic and the humanitarian emergencies in Bosnia and Rwanda, have made this evident by creating new relationships among medicine, public health, ethics, and human rights. Each domain has seeped into the other, making allies of public health and human rights, pressing the need for an ethics of public health, and revealing the rights‐related (...)

Causation, Agency, and the Law: On Some Subtleties in Antiphon's Second Tetralogy.Joel E. Mann - 2012 - Journal of the History of Philosophy 50 (1):7-19.
Antiphon is often criticized for confusing two distinct species of responsibility, causal and moral. Insofar as this distinction is fundamental to any mature legal or ethical theory, Antiphon appears at best naïve, at worst dishonest. I argue that a careful analysis of his second tetralogy reveals that Antiphon was well aware of the distinction and the rationale for recognizing it. However, Antiphon questions whether the distinction can be so easily made in every case, and he suggests that the inadequacy of (...)

Cetacean culture: Definitions and evidence.Janet Mann - 2001 - Behavioral and Brain Sciences 24 (2):343-343.
Rendell and Whitehead have drawn attention to some striking cetacean behaviour patterns. However, the claims for are premature. Weak examples of cetacean social learning do not, in sum, provide strong evidence for culture. Other terms, such as social learning, vocal learning, imitation, and tradition may be applied in some cases without resorting to more complex and controversial terms.

Pessimistic futurism: Survival and reproduction in Octavia Butler’s Dawn.Justin Louis Mann - 2018 - Feminist Theory 19 (1):61-76.
This article examines the critical work of Octavia Butler’s speculative fiction novel Dawn, which follows Lilith Ayapo, a black American woman who is rescued by an alien species after a nuclear war destroys nearly all life on Earth. Lilith awakens 250 years later and learns that the aliens have tasked her with reviving other humans and repopulating the planet. In reframing Reagan-era debates about security and survival, Butler captured the spirit of ‘pessimistic futurism’, a unique way of thinking and writing (...)

Toward a New Health Strategy to Control the HIV/AIDS Pandemic.Jonathan Mann, Daniel Tarantola & Jeff O’Malley - 1994 - Journal of Law, Medicine and Ethics 22 (1):41-52.
Since its recognition in the early 1980s, the global HIV/AIDS pandemic has continued to grow relentlessly. Early efforts in HIV prevention sought to influence behavior by providing information about the dangers of AIDS along with recommendations for safe behavior. This approach helped to alert people about AIDS, but was insufficient to promote or sustain behavioral change. The second approach attempted to promote individual behavioral change by designing AIDS programs that would deliver a mix of information, materials, and services. This program-based approach (...)

Throwing the Book at Them: John of Segovia’s Use of the Qur’an.Jesse Mann - 2019 - Revista Española de Filosofía Medieval 26 (1):79-96.
This essay investigates how Juan de Segovia used the Qur’ān in his engagement with Islam. The essay has three principal aims. First, it identifies certain distinctive aspects of Segovia’s use of the Qur’ān. Second, it examines his treatment of sacraments and soteriology in the Qur’ān. Third, it considers Segovia’s use of the Qur’ān in light of David Bertaina’s recent analysis of Christians and the Qur’ān. It is argued that, just as Segovia read the Qur’ān in various ways, he also used (...)
