    Jewish bioethics?Mark Levin & Ira Birnbaum - 2000 - Journal of Medicine and Philosophy 25 (4):469 – 484.
"Jewish Bioethics" as currently formulated has been criticized as being of parochial concern, drawing on obscure methodology, employing an authoritarian (and, to the modern mind, unintelligible) method of discourse and as being of little relevance to the wider community. We analyze Jewish bioethics in terms of rule and principle theory and demonstrate that it is based on rational consideration and reproducible reasoning. This approach allows methodological and terminological translation into a Western method of discourse that, in turn, has much to (...)

    Autonomy and credibility: Voice as method.Ira J. Cohen & Mary F. Rogers - 1994 - Sociological Theory 12 (3):304-318.
Although little noticed by practicing theorists, narrative voice influences theoretical work. This essay presents a demonstration of voice as method, concentrating on brief segments of works by Garfinkel and Goffman. We attend to two methodological themes: how theorists use voice to establish intellectual autonomy, and how the use of voice influences credibility with readers. Garfinkel maximizes his autonomy by using narrative techniques that isolate him from his readers, and produce little common context with them as a result. Goffman maintains a (...)

The everyday phenomenology of bedside insight: Response to Paley's critique of phenomenological research in nursing.Shira Birnbaum - 2024 - Nursing Inquiry 31 (4):e12657.
The quality of phenomenological research in nursing has been a subject of long‐standing debate and critique, but conversation took a particularly contentious turn following publication of John Paley's 2017 Phenomenology as Qualitative Research (Routledge), which elicited strong reactions. Faculty in nursing doctoral programs now face a challenge: in light of current controversies, what can we teach that is appropriately labeled phenomenological, and is there a way to present philosophical concepts that might equip students to avoid the most egregious mistakes of (...)

    Adorno humoriste malgré lui.Antonia Birnbaum - 2021 - Filozofski Vestnik 41 (1).
What insight is there to gain when Adorno is put “beside himself”? The humoristic tendency of Theodor W. Adorno and Max Horkheimer’s famous essay on the culture industry highlights the non-categorical modalities borrowed from the avant-gardes and psychoanalysis that disorganize Kant’s supposedly invariant concepts a priori: partialities of the driven montage, allegorisation. This tendency opens on the decentering consequences for the thinking of another subject, beyond the logic of suspicion and the melancolic jouissance that block it.

    Aldous Huxley: A Quest for Values.Milton Birnbaum - 2006 - Routledge.
In the moral vacuum and world of shifting values following World War I, Aldous Huxley was both a sensitive reflector and an articulate catalyst. This work provides a highly illuminating analysis of Huxley's evolution from skeptic to mystic. As Milton Birnbaum shows, in a perceptive interpretation of Huxley's poetry, fiction, essays and biographies--what evolved in Huxley's moral and intellectual pilgrimage was not so much a change in direction as a shift in emphasis. Even in the sardonic Huxley of the (...)

Philo of Alexandria, On the life of Abraham: introduction, translation, and commentary.Ellen Birnbaum & John M. Dillon (eds.) - 2020 - Boston: Brill.
On the Life of Abraham displays Philo's philosophical, exegetical, and literary genius at its best. Philo begins by introducing the biblical figures Enos, Enoch, Noah, Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob as unwritten laws. Then, interweaving literal, ethical, and allegorical interpretations, Philo presents the life and achievements of Abraham, founder of the Jewish nation, in the form of a Greco-Roman bios, or biography. Ellen Birnbaum and John Dillon explain why and how this work is important within the context of Philo's own (...)

Basic Income and Social Sustainability in Post-Growth Economies.Simon Birnbaum, Eva Alfredsson & Mikael Malmaeus - 2020 - Basic Income Studies 15 (1).
A central task in efforts to identify pathways to ecologically and socially sustainable economies is to reduce inequality and poverty while reducing material consumption, which has recently inspired future post-growth scenarios. We build a model to explore the potential of a universal basic income (UBI) to serve these objectives. Starting from the observation that post-growth trajectories can take very different forms we analyze UBI in two scenarios advanced in the literature. Comparing UBI in a “local self-sufficiency” economy to a UBI (...)

    Hume’s Extreme Skepticism in Treatise I IV 7.Ira Singer - 1995 - Canadian Journal of Philosophy 25 (4):595-622.
This paper explores two aspects of Hume's skeptical crisis in the conclusion to _Treatise<D> Book I: his involved personal experience of the crisis, and his detached naturalistic reflection on it. I discuss several distinct states of mind reported in the text, ranging from extreme skepticism that rejects all belief, to natural dogmatism that rejects all reflection, to mitigated skepticism that tries to reconcile reflection and belief. I argue against interpretations according to which Hume's skepticism supports his naturalism, and I suggest (...)

Profits with principles: seven strategies for delivering value with values.Ira A. Jackson - 2004 - New York: Currency/Doubleday. Edited by Jane Nelson.
In the wake of business scandals at Enron, Arthur Andersen, Global Crossing, Tyco—the list grows daily—there is an increasing sense among employees, executives, investors, and the public that the “anything goes” culture of the New Economy is over. Today, businesses must act responsibly, transparently, and with integrity. Using in-depth case studies and examples from over 50 companies that range from Starbucks to Citigroup, General Motors to General Electric, DuPont to Dell, Ira A. 20. Should surfers be ostracized? Basic income, liberal neutrality, and the work ethos.Simon Birnbaum - 2011 - Politics, Philosophy and Economics 10 (4):396-419.
Neutralists have argued that there is something illiberal about linking access to gift-like resources to work requirements. The central liberal motivation for basic income is to provide greater freedom to choose between different ways of life, including options attaching great importance to non-market activities and disposable time. As argued by Philippe Van Parijs, even those spending their days surfing should be fed. This article examines Van Parijs' dual commitment to a ‘real libertarian’ justification of basic income and the public enforcement (...)

When children are more logical than adults: Experimental investigations of scalar implicature.Ira A. Noveck - 2001 - Cognition 78 (2):165-188.
A conversational implicature is an inference that consists in attributing to a speaker an implicit meaning that goes beyond the explicit linguistic meaning of an utterance. This paper experimentallyinvestigates scalar implicature, a paradigmatic case of implicature in which a speaker's use of a term like Some indicates that the speaker had reasons not to use a more informative one from the samescale, e.g. All; thus, Some implicates Not all. Pragmatic theorists like Grice would predict that a pragmatic interpretation is determined (...)

Appraisal in the Emotion System: Coherence in Strategies for Coping.Ira J. Roseman - 2013 - Emotion Review 5 (2):141-149.
Emotions can be understood as a coherent, integrated system of general-purpose coping strategies, guided by appraisal, for responding to situations of crisis and opportunity (when specific-purpose motivational systems may be less effective). This perspective offers functional explanations for the presence of particular emotions in the emotion repertoire, and their elicitation by particular appraisal combinations. Implications of the Emotion System model for debated issues, such as the dimensional vs. discrete nature of appraisals and emotions, are also discussed.

    De quoi avons-nous peur?Jean Birnbaum (ed.) - 2018 - [Paris]: Gallimard.

    Sceptical theism and moral scepticism.Ira M. Schnall - 2007 - Religious Studies 43 (1):49-69.
Several theists have adopted a position known as ‘sceptical theism ’, according to which God is justified in allowing suffering, but the justification is often beyond human comprehension. A problem for sceptical theism is that if there are unknown justifications for suffering, then we cannot know whether it is right for a human being to relieve suffering. After examining several proposed solutions to this problem, I conclude that one who is committed to a revealed religion has a simpler and more (...)
