Algeria depends solely on publicly produced housing. Algeria’shousing industry has been lagging behind in its development. This has causedmany citizens to struggle with finding proper housing. Aside from being oneof the highest countries in terms of rent rates, construction and distribution ofpublic houses in Algeria takes more than 15 years of waiting. Despite that thequality of the housing is bad. This paper proposes Shari’ah-compliant housingcertificates, a new Islamic financial instrument that would assist in houseconstruction in Algeria. This instrument uses Istisnaʽ (...) as the underlying contractand accommodates guaranteed returns as well as negotiability for investors. This study investigates the impact of economic uncertainty on information asymmetry and ESG (Environmental, Social, and Governance) controversies within companies, while exploring the moderating role of digital integration. By analyzing a panel of 1303 companies across 20 European countries from 2016 to 2023, and employing the two-stage generalized method of moments (GMM) and two-stage least squares (2SLS) for robustness tests, the research reveals that economic uncertainty, as measured by the Economic Policy Uncertainty (EPU) index, exacerbates information asymmetry and heightens ESG (...) controversies. However, the adoption of digital technologies mitigates these adverse effects by enhancing transparency and reducing the likelihood of opportunistic behavior. Theoretically, this research contributes to the understanding of how digitalization can reinforce corporate governance and sustainability in uncertain times. Practically, the findings suggest that companies should accelerate their digitalization efforts to safeguard against the destabilizing effects of economic uncertainty, while bolstering their governance and social responsibility performance. This paper investigates the correlation between excessive ESG disclosure and economic risk, measured through the cost of capital. We analyze a sample comprising 430 S&P 500 US firms over 12 years, from 2011 to 2022. Our findings show that excessive ESG disclosure is associated with a reduction in the cost of capital. Specifically, the environmental and social dimensions of ESG disclosure exhibit explanatory power in decreasing the cost of capital, with the environmental dimension demonstrating particularly strong influence. Conversely, excessive governance (...) disclosure shows no significant impact. Additionally, our study shows that CSR assurance serves as a negative moderator in the relationship between excessive ESG disclosure (including overall excessive ESG score, and environmental and social dimensions) and economic risk. I concentrate on difficulties met by Putnam's "internal" or "scientific" realism. They concern his attempt to reconcile pragmatism and realism. My line of argument is the following. A) By exploiting Putnam's argument against the "God's-eye view" and the Brains-in-a-Vat argument , it can be shown that the realism he is defending is either a too strong metaphysical realism or a too weak "residual" position. B) If it is a metaphysical position, then it contradicts Putnam's own views on GEV. C) If (...) it is a "residual" position, then in the context of a Theory of meaning for formal and natural languages, it is not more explicative than some forms of functionalism. The paper ends with an attempt to reconcile Putnam's pragmatism with a functionalist approach to epistemic features of "meaning," for the sake of a reconciliation between pragmatism and realism. This study explores an important yet understudied relationship between CEO narcissism and green innovation, both separately and when moderated by CEO demographic traits (international experience and age). We analyzed a sample of 206 U.S.-listed firms on the S&P 500 over a 10-year period. Our initial findings indicate a negative association between CEO narcissism and green innovation. However, further analysis reveals that this relationship is influenced by two CEO demographic traits. Specifically, CEOs' international experience and age mitigate the initially negative link (...) between CEO narcissism and green innovation. These results align with insights from the upper echelon theory, shedding light on the dark side of narcissism. The implications of our findings extend to firms' team management, directors, policy-makers, and regulators. (shrink)

Studies on Jean Rhys have been fragmentary concentrating on one or two aspects of Rhys’s thematic concern with the alienation of the white creole without laying emphasis on Rhys’s exploration of the Creole’s identity. There has been no attempt to examine if the creole has to struggle harder and more than whites and blacks to come to terms with her personal identity until now. The answer is affirmative because the creole is a composite human being. Indeed, the white creole is (...) the ‘fruit’ of a mixed union. Born into miscegenation, hybridity and creolization, the creole is physically, linguistically, socially and religiously a diverse human being. Within the scope of this paper, the term identity is used in a broad sense. The creole’s personal identity refers to the different identities the Creole can have at different times and in different circumstances. Correspondingly, she must negotiate the white and black elements of her identity. The Creole must deal with the complexity of her identity through a web of tangled relationships with both whites and blacks. Read from this light, the personal identity of the creole is not “either/ or,” but reluctantly “both/ and.” In various ways, the creole is an ‘Everyman.’ The Creole undergoes an awareness, and is eventually, redefined through the image of the ‘other.’ Indeed, her jump toward her black friend Tia reflects Rhys’s basic concern for a Caribbean society in which assimilation and personal identity must blend in a single humane goal, that is, to co-exist beyond the lines of race, gender, class and sex in order to avoid annihilation. Este trabajo indaga en algunas discusiones alrededor del problema de la materia, marcando puntos de encuentro y divergencias entre algunos elementos presentes en las teorías queer, los nuevos materialismos y el feminismo materialista francófono. Más específicamente, se preguntará por qué consecuencias teóricas y políticas podrían tener las diversas conceptualizaciones de la materia y lo material en las elaboraciones de cinco referentes indiscutidas de esas corrientes de pensamiento: Judith Butler, Paola Tabet y Nicole-Claude Mathieu y Elizabeth Wilson y Jane Bennett.
