  3. Science and Religion: Original Unity and the Courage to Create.Paul Henry Carr - 2001 - Zygon 36 (2):255-259.
Paul Tillich noted the emergence of science by “demythologization” from its original unity with religion in antiquity. Demythologization can lead to conflict with accepted paradigms and therefore requires the “courage to create,” as exemplified by Galileo. Tillich's “God above God” as the ground of creativity and courage can, in this new millennium, enable religion to be reconciled with science. Religion is a source of the “courage to create,” which is essential for progress in scientific knowledge. Religion and science working together (...)

The Lowell Institute in Boston, Massachusetts, founded in 1836, supports an annual series of distinguished lectures. In particular, it addresses the question of altruism and its (...)

The Scribbling Women and the Cosmic Success Story.Henry Nash Smith - 1974 - Critical Inquiry 1 (1):47-70.
This essay deals with American fiction between the early 1850s, when Hawthorne and Melville produced their best work, and the first novels of Howells and James in the early 1870s. The familiar notion that this was the period of transition from pre-Civil War Romanticism to postwar Realism tells us nothing in particular about it. Yet we need some historical frame in which to place both of the later efforts of Hawthorne and Melville and the apprentice work of the next generation (...)

The Commonwealth Royal Commission investigating institutional responses to child sexual abuse, announced by Prime Minister Julia Gillard on 12 November 2012, has made life for the faithful even more difficult, as the Catholic Church in Australia comes under intense and continual public scrutiny. On a Certain Form of Philosophical Argument.Henry E. Kyburg - 1970 - American Philosophical Quarterly 7 (3):229-237.
There is a certain form of philosophical argument that characteristically begins, "we have no reason to suppose that..." and goes on to deny some proposition we took to be well supported. The claim that there is no inductive argument takes the form: the sample on which such an argument would be based is taken from a special part of the population; but we have no reason to suppose that this special part of the population is not very different from the (...)

A Proposed Semantical Solution to the So‐called ‘Problem of Mass Nouns’.Henry Laycock - 2006 - In Words without objects: semantics, ontology, and logic for non-singularity. New York: Oxford University Press.
This chapter takes issue with the common assumption that referential expressions and definite descriptions involving ‘mass nouns’ are semantically singular, thereby designating so-called parcels of matter or individual instances of stuff. The trouble is that whereas count nouns are either singular or plural, the so-called mass nouns, because they are non-count, are semantically neither singular nor plural. Russell’s Theory of Descriptions as well as considerations on persistence, identity, and flux are invoked to reinforce this point.

Quantification and its Discontents.Henry Laycock - 2006 - In Words without objects: semantics, ontology, and logic for non-singularity. New York: Oxford University Press.
The chapter focuses on quantification as it figures in standard versions of the predicate calculus. These versions are straightforwardly reductive in that non-singular sentences must be re-cast into singular form if they are to receive representation. However, various non-singular sentences, including certain kinds of plural sentences, are refractory to representation in this form. Essentially singular forms of quantifier-expression must be distinguished from non-singular forms to lay the basis for sui generis non-singular forms of quantification, appropriate to both plural nouns and (...)
