What are the cognitive advantages and pitfalls of this reasoning? What kinds of tools can be developed to aid in the use of visual representation? Trolley problems and like cases are often thought to show the inadequacy of purely consequentialist moral theories. In particular, they are often taken to reveal that consequentialists unduly neglect the moral significance of the causal structure of decision problems. To precisify such critiques and one sort of deontological morality they motivate, I develop a formal modeling framework within which trolley problems can be represented as suitably supplemented structural causal models and various consequentialist and double effect-inspired moral theories can be viewed (...) as disagreeing over the inputs of a common decision rule. Certains ont proclamé la " fin de l'Histoire ". Ne serait-ce pas plutôt celle de la philosophie politique moderne qu'il conviendrait de guetter? Depuis cinq siècles, en effet, l'action politique a eu pour objet l'institution et la consolidation de la souveraineté, tandis que la philosophie politique structurait ses principes de gouvernement à partir de ce concept : penser la politique c'était penser la souveraineté. Or la souveraineté, née en Europe, forgée à travers les guerres qui donnèrent aux peuples le sentiment (...) de leur particularité, s'y achève sous nos yeux, en une Union des peuples fondée désormais sur la paix, à la suite d'un génocide suicidaire. Pour penser l'achèvement, la philosophie politique ne saurait plus se contenter de répéter ses affirmations communes sur la volonté du peuple, l'indivisibilité de la république, la dictature du prolétariat et les droits de l'homme. Aucune n'a pu fonder l'existence libre de la multitude : elles ont soit révélé dans l'histoire leur absolue contradiction en allant, parfois, jusqu'au crime, soit permis d'ouvrir le chemin de la vie libre sans être capables, cependant, de le tracer jusqu'au bout. Ces catégories ressortissent à un monde et à sa fable que les temps présents abandonnent au passé. Le problème constitutif de la philosophie politique - les conditions de la vie libre - n'a pas disparu pour autant, mais la solution nouvelle est à inventer. Une double tâche s'impose désormais : montrer en quoi la souveraineté est achevée et ce que cela signifie, jusque dans les chemins divergents qu'empruntent l'Europe et les Etats-Unis ; formuler des propositions sérieuses capables d'orienter le débat politique de notre temps quelle moralité nouvelle, autre que la souveraineté, inventer pour des peuples européens qui, faute de pouvoir encore se faire la guerre, se sont du coup, sans autre projet, abandonnés au marché? Selon la façon dont on l’envisage et l’origine du regard qui se pose sur elle, l’autorité ne paraît pas représenter la même chose. Pour certains elle est l’expression d’un principe abstrait, atemporel, relatif au jeu des places qu’organisent les rapports sociaux, en l’occurrence les places spécifiques qu’occupent les parents par rapport à l’enfant. Pourtant, pour d’autres approches, notamment les approches psychanalytiques, l’autorité n’est pas un principe neutre, elle a un sexe, de préférence masculin. Que peut-on dire d’une telle affirmation à (...) notre époque de reconfiguration des relations non seulement entre les sexes mais aussi entre les générations, et plus globalement de l’ensemble des relations privées, si ce n’est des rapports entre le public et le privé? Je m’essaie ici à une analyse sociologique, alimentée de références psychologiques et historiques, de la signification de cette question et des réponses qu’il est possible de lui apporter. (shrink)

The future has become a problem for the present. Almost every critical issue is now understood and experienced through the prism of the future since this is the primary focus for the playing out of crises. Senses of the Future offers a wide-ranging discussion of theories of the future. It covers the main ideas of the future in modern thought and explores how we should view the future today in light of a plurality of very different and conflicting visions. The (...) key contribution of this book is to bring together the different approaches with an account that is grounded in sociological and philosophical analysis as opposed to visions of the future that are inspired by extreme visions of catastrophe or approaches that see the future as only the continuation of the present. This article assumes that the key element in Relativism is the denial of any comparability between different moral codes. Each system of morality is, according to the relativist, defined internally to any given culture, as parallels with examples in sport might illustrate, and as two key examples from recent moral disputes amply show. While classical writers such as Hume and Bentham, each in his way a kind of utilitarian, certainly intended to be absolutist, it might nevertheless be argued that they (...) left the way open to relativism despite their intentions. The absolutist needs to establish a common moral standard of some kind which can be used as a standard of comparison between apparently different moral codes. Hume's assumption that we share the disposition to sympathy with others seems far too optimistic; and Bentham's attempt to be scientific presupposes a shared view both of values and of the canons of moral reasoning; but there is arguably no such shared view. Might some version of Aristotelianism be a more promising approach? The article ends with an ariswer to this question. /// O presente artigo parte do pressuposto de que o elemento-chave do Relativismo é a negação de toda e qualquer comparabilidade entre diferentes códigos morais. Cada sistema de moralidade é, de acordo com o relativista, deftnido internamente nos termos de cada cultura determinada, tal como se pode ilustrar com exemplos do mundo do desporto, e dois exemplos tirados da discussão moral mais recente amplamente demonstram. Enquanto que escritores clássicos tais como David Hume e Jeremy Bentham, cada um deles utilitarista à sua maneira, pretendiam certamente ser absolutistas, a verdade é que, argumenta o autor do artigo, ambos deixaram, apesar das suas intenções, o caminho aberto ao relativismo. O absolutista necessita de alguma forma de estabelecer um padrão moral comum que possa ser usado como termo de comparação entre códigos morais aparentemente diferenciados. O pressuposto de Hume de que nós partilhamos uma inclinação para a simpatia em relação a outros seres humanos parece demasiado optimista; por seu lado, a tentativa de Bentham de corresponder às expectativas da ciência pressupõem, por seu lado, uma visdo comum dos valores e dos cânones do raciocínio moral. O problema, porém, é que se pode demonstrar não existir uma tal visão comum.
