Let L be a quantum logic, here an orthoalgebra, and let Δ be a convex set of states on L. Then Δ generates a base-normed space, and the dual-order unit-normed space contains a canonically constructed homomorphic copy of L, denoted by eΔ(L). A convex set Δ of states on L is said to be ample provided that every state on L is obtained by restricting an element of the base of the bi-dual order unit-normed space to eΔ(L). For a quantum (...) logic L we show that a convex set of states Δ is ample if and only if Δ is weakly dense in the convex set of all states on L. The notion of ampleness is then discussed in the context of Gleason-type theorems for W* algebras and JBW algebras and also in the context of classical logics. (shrink)

We investigate the notion of conditional probability and the quantum mechanical concept of state reduction in the context of GL spaces satisfying the Alfsen-Shultz condition.

Although Leibniz's writing forms an enormous corpus, no single work stands as a canonical expression of his whole philosophy. En 1684 le tout nouveau periodique edite a Leipzig, les Acta Eruditorum, publie le texte fondateur du calcul leibnizien: Nova methodus pro maximis et minimis. Ce n'etait pas le premier article de Leibniz dans cette revue et ce ne sera pas le dernier. De 1682 a 1713 s'echelonnent des publications, aujourd'hui classiques, sur l'Isochrone, la Chainette, la Brachystochrone, etc. Ce volume en reunit vingt-six, en majorite traduites pour la premiere fois en langue francaise. Leur selection fut essentiellement guidee par la (...) volonte de mettre a la portee du lecteur les principaux ecrits mathematiques de Leibniz consacres au calcul differentiel et integral. Outre les resultats scientifiques, on decouvrira dans ces textes l'interet epistemologique de Leibniz pour l'invention, la methode, l'histoire et son souci d'une ethique de la recherche. (shrink)

So far, recognition theory has focused its attention on modern capitalism and its formation in richer Western societies and has neglected issues of global poverty. A brief sketch of Axel Honneth's recognition theory precedes an examination of how the theory can contribute to a better understanding of global poverty, and justice in relation to poverty. I wish to highlight five ways in which recognition theory can enrich our inventory of theories dealing with global poverty and justice: It emphasizes the importance (...) of giving victims of poverty due weight in theorizing about poverty. It provides a vocabulary to conceptualize the experiences of suffering by poverty in terms of misrecognition. It highlights the importance of legal recognition and of actually having certain rights in order to be respected. It bases its critique of poverty on a particular idea of justice and how it should unfold. Finally, recognition theory demands that the poor must be involved in decision-making processes and their agency has .. (shrink)

Classical notions of Common Ground have been criticized for being cognitively demanding given their appeal to complex meta-representations. The authors here propose a distinction between Immediate Common Ground, containing information specific to the communicative situation, and General Common Ground, containing information that is not situation-specific. This distinction builds on previous work by ], extending the idea that common cognitive processes are part of the establishment and use of common ground. This is in line with the idea that multiple cognitive resources (...) are involved in dialogue and avoids appealing to special-purpose representations for Common Ground purposes. (shrink)

We argue that any account of mental disorders that meets the desideratum of assigning causal efficacy to mental disorders faces the so-called “causal exclusion problem”. We argue that fully reductive accounts solve this problem but run into the problem of multiple realizability. Recently advocated symptom-network approaches avoid the problem of multiple realizability, but they also run into the causal exclusion problem. Based on a critical analysis of these accounts, we will present our own account according to which mental disorders are (...) dispositional properties that are token-identical to physical properties. More specifically, they are analyzed as dispositions to cause the specific set of symptoms. We argue that our account is not only able to account for multiple realizability without running into the causal exclusion problem, but that it also allows for the integration of very different factors into the description and explanation of mental disorders, such as neurological and neurochemical factors on the one side and social and cultural factors on the other. It thereby gives the psychiatric level of causal explanation autonomy while securing the causal efficacy of mental disorders in a causally closed physical world. (shrink)

Max Webers riesiges Werk blieb Fragment. Insbesondere ist es den zahllosen Weber-Interpretationen bislang nicht wirklich gelungen, eine innere Einheit des Werkes aufzuweisen. Dieser Aufsatz versucht in höchst kompremierter Form zu zeigen, dass für Weber die Frage nach der geschichts- und kulturbestimmenden Kraft der Religion eine Schlüsselfrage ist, die das ganze Werk durchzieht und dessen innere Einheit zu entziffern hilft. Ohne die Macht der Religion ist für Weber die Entstehung der säkularen westlichen Moderne nicht zu verstehen. Insbesondere ist die „Entzauberung“ der (...) okzidentalen Welt selbst das Ergebnis eines jahrtausend alten religionsgeschichtlichen Prozesses. Dabei ist es die Tragödie der Religion, dass sie in dem Prozess der Entzauberung, dessen Trägerin sie war, selbst sich aufhob. Sie kam, wenn auch nicht an ihr faktisches historisches Ende, so doch an ihr Ende als kulturbestimmende Lebensmacht. (shrink)

Weltweit leben auch heute noch – je nach Messung – hunderte Millionen Kinder in Armut, und Kinderarmut ist sowohl in reichen wie auch armen Ländern zu finden. Gemäß der Zahlen der Weltbank mussten 2013 fast 400 Millionen Kinder weltweit mit weniger als 1,90 $ am Tag auskommen, und die offizielle Statistik für die EU spricht für das Jahr 2016 von fast 25 Millionen Kindern, die in Europa in armutsgefährdeten Haushalten leben.

This brief introduction frames a guest-edited collection of eleven contributed articles in the Journal of Global Ethics focused on global justice and childhood. On a general level, there is widespread consensus that there is a strong need for improvement in the lives of children around the globe. What global justice demands in this regard, however, has never been fleshed out in detail and there is only a little philosophical literature on this topic. Against this background, five aspects of the question (...) of global justice for children need to be addressed. First, one has to take into account the debate between cosmopolitanism and particularism, as well as the debate as to whether and to what extent individual, collective or institutional actors should be prioritized. Secondly, a theory of global justice for children must explain how the content of global justice for children is founded and justified, and what it comprises. Third, different principles can be used to assess global justice for children. Only two prominent alternatives are mentioned here: egalitarianism and sufficiency. Fourthly, the temporal dimension of global justice is of particular importance for children. Fifthly, an approach focusing on the examination of injustices is equally necessary. (shrink)
