Gottfried Keller’s reservations about the church and religion, which remarkably did not stand in the way of his installation as a national writer or at least were partly overlooked in the course of a self-congratulatory reception, can be studied in the prime example of the famous novella interlude of Meretlein, as it is found in both versions of Green Henry. The investigation of the interlude here is based on the various media and sources which shaped the novel character. (...) Pourquoi Ludwig Wittgenstein était-il fasciné par certaines œuvres du grand écrivain suisse Gottfried Keller? Cette question a intrigué Jacques Bouveresse et le fruit de cette interrogation a donné son ouvrage Le danseur et sa corde, Wittgenstein, Tolstoï, Nietzsche, Gottfried Keller et les difficultés de la foi (Marseille, Agone, 2014). Dans l’échange qui suit, organisé en mai 2017 par la section genevoise de la Société suisse de philosophie, Jacques Bouveresse et Ruedi Imbach se penchent sur le titre (...) de cet ouvrage, sur l’intention qui a présidé à sa rédaction, mais aussi sur la critique aiguë du christianisme institutionnel, surtout dans sa version doctrinale et doctrinaire, dans certaines œuvres de Keller, ainsi que sur le fort intérêt de Wittgenstein pour ces œuvres et pour cette critique. Les deux auteurs s’accordent pour dire que le christianisme ne s’enseigne pas : il est plutôt quelque chose qui relève de la vie. (shrink)

La 4e de couverture indique : « En écrivant ce livre, j'ai essayé de réaliser simultanément deux ambitions : celle de comprendre les raisons qui ont pu faire de Gottfried Keller un des écrivains que Wittgenstein admirait le plus, et celle de préciser ce que j'ai écrit sur les relations que ce philosophe a entretenues avec la religion. Ces deux objectifs convergent car peu de questions sont aussi présentes et aussi centrales dans l'oeuvre du romancier que celle de (...) la religion. De plus, l'espèce de "révélation" que Wittgenstein a eue lorsqu'il est entré en contact avec le texte de la version tolstoïenne de l'Evangile semble avoir marqué de façon profonde sa relation avec le christianisme. Même le 7ractatus comporte des fo-mules qui ont parfois une ressemblance assez frappante avec ce que Wittgenstein avait pu lire dans l'Abrégé de l'Evangile. Pour lui, "le penseur religieux honnête est comme un danseur de corde. Il marche, en apparence, presque uniquement sur l'air. Son sol est le plus étroit qui se puisse concevoir. Et pourtant on peut réellement marcher sur lui". Ce livre est certainement l'un des plus personnels de Jacques Bouveresse. Ce qui est en jeu, ce n'est pas le jugement à porter sur les dogmes, les croyances, etc., mais le regard à porter sur la foi elle-même comme attitude face à la vie. Après Peut-on ne pas croire et Que faut-il faire de la religion, ce livre est le dernier volet d'une trilogie sur la philosophie de la religion.. ». (shrink)

Gottfried Keller's “A Village Romeo and Juliet” contains an astonishing number of neuter terms that are of key importance to this novella. This observation is in line with Keller's predilection for miniaturized worlds and diminutives, played out in this narrative through two basic traits: the reduction of the Shakespearean tragedy to a novella that is a “village story” and the nicknames given to its female protagonist. Around one pole of neutrality the story assembles a cluster of terms (...) that convey things in an abstract, generalized manner. Other neutral nouns make deeply personal concerns look as if they were governed by some overriding, a-personal force. In this vein, the text tends to de-personalize human actions by expressing them in the grammatical form of nominalized infinitives. Inconspicuous idiomatic phrases seem to hide, as in the Freudian Id, the menacing power of the drives. Precisely by revealing that the narrative's sphere is constructed of neutral elementary particles, the text transforms and transubstantiates what it represents into the neutrality of the script. It does so solely, it seems, to make palpable that this literature is charged with the sensuality of the genders. (shrink)

Von einem Roman erwarten wir, dass sich seine Handlung zielstrebig auf ein Ende hin bewegt. Bis ins 19. Jh. wurden auch Vorgänge in einer von Gott eingerichteten Wirklichkeit auf diese Weise verstanden. Romane konnten daher beanspruchen, in ihrer Zielstrebigkeit die Wirklichkeit abzubilden. Durch Charles Darwin geriet diese Weltsicht in eine Krise. Die Studie zeigt, wie sich das Erzählen in einer als ziellos und zufällig aufgefassten Wirklichkeit veränderte. Wie können Romane die so verstandene Wirklichkeit abbilden? Diese Frage wird beispielhaft an literarischen (...) und ästhetischen Texten von Friedrich Theodor Vischer und Gottfried Keller erörtert. Zeugnisse eines engagierten und um Freundschaft werbenden Philosophen Der Philosoph und judische Denker Hermann Cohen (1842-1918) zeigt sich in den Briefen an seinen schweizerischen Schuler und spateren Professor am Zurcher Polytechnikum, August Stadler (1850-1910), als impulsiver, mitteilsamer, Vertrauen schenkender und um Freundschaft werbender Philosoph. Seine zahlreichen Bemerkungen zu systematischen Problemen, zur damaligen Wissenschaftslandschaft und zur allgemeinen politischen Lage sind eine unschatzbare Quelle fur das intellektuelle Profil jener Zeit und besonders fur die Begegnung mit den Personlichkeiten Cohens und Stadlers. Der Schwerpunkt (...) der Ausgabe liegt auf den in Zurich aufbewahrten Schriftstucken von 1872 bis 1881. Kurz vor Beginn der Korrespondenz hatte Cohen in Berlin einen Kreis von Studenten um sich versammelt, dem sich auch August Stadler anschloss. Die personliche Nahe zwischen beiden war sofort gross und blieb trotz mancher Meinungsverschiedenheiten ungetrubt. Neuneinhalb Jahre spater, im letzten Brief dieser Reihe, erscheint erstmals der Name des neuen Marburger Privatdozenten Paul Natorp. Damit beginnt die Geschichte der sogenannten Marburger Schule. Der vorliegende Band beinhaltet somit den Ruckblick auf die Vorgeschichte dieser einflussreichen, stilbildenden Denkrichtung im wilhelminischen Deutschland. Inhaltlich nicht weniger interessant sind die spateren, nicht dem Zurcher Corpus angehorigen Briefe aus den Jahren zwischen 1886 und 1905. In ihnen aussert sich Cohen zu seinen Begegnungen mit Gottfried Keller in Zurich, zu dessen Tod und zuletzt zur Sorge um Stadlers Gesundheit. Im Anhang findet sich eine Liste samtlicher Lehrveranstaltungen Cohens in Marburg und an der Berliner Hochschule fur die Wissenschaft des Judentums. Este artigo é uma pesquisa bibliográfica centrada na análise de cinco textos do marxista húngaro György Lukács cujo objetivo era compreender melhor como esse autor caracteriza o complexo da educação em sua teoria. As obras selecionadas para o estudo foram o capítulo A reprodução do livro Para uma ontologia do ser social 2, além de quatro ensaios dispersos em outras obras: O Poema pedagógico de Makarenko, Os anos de aprendizado de Wilhelm Meister, Lenin e os problemas de transição e (...) class='Hi'>Gottfried Keller. Expõe-se que Lukács não compreende a educação em sentido estrito como limitada à sociedade capitalista, mas como universal, por se caracterizar como uma práxis intencional que pode ocorrer em diversos âmbitos da sociedade. Tal resultado aponta para uma interpretação da educação em Lukács menos limitada à crítica de função reprodutora e, portanto, abrindo maiores possibilidades de conexão entre a teoria lukacsiana e a luta revolucionária. Immer wieder hat sich Theodor Fontane in Briefen und Biografien, Rezensionen und Essays zu zeitgenössischen Autoren geäussert und sein Verständnis von Realismus in Auseinandersetzung mit einzelnen Werken - etwa von Willibald Alexis, Gustav Freytag oder Friedrich Spielhagen - entwickelt. Das Spezifikum seiner eigenen Texte lässt sich nicht zuletzt durch Vergleiche mit der Prosa von Adalbert Stifter und Gottfried Keller, Theodor Storm und Wilhelm Raabe profilieren. Im Verhältnis zu ihrer Art, Figuren zu entwerfen oder Dialoge zu gestalten, gewinnt seine (...) Erzählweise, gewinnt seine Kunst, die gesellschaftliche Konstruktion der Wirklichkeit aufzuzeigen und anhand von Konflikten durchzuspielen, Kontur. Das Buch reflektiert in acht Porträts, einer Einleitung und Hinweisen zu Fontanes Poetik sein Verhältnis zu den deutschsprachigen Realisten des 19. Jahrhunderts. LEIBNIZ AND THE TWO SOPHIES is a critical edition of all of the philosophically important material from the correspondence between the philosopher Gottfried Wilhelm Leibniz (1646-1716) and his two royal patronesses, Electress Sophie of Hanover (1630-1714), and her daughter, Queen Sophie Charlotte of Prussia (1668-1705). In this correspondence, Leibniz expounds in a very accessible way his views on topics such as the nature and operation of the mind, innate knowledge, the afterlife, ethics, and human nature. The correspondence also contains (...) the only known philosophical writings by Sophie and Sophie Charlotte, and thus provides a valuable insight into their views and concerns, as well as throwing light on their characters. The texts are accompanied by a substantial introductory essay which sets the context for the correspondence and analyzes its main philosophical themes. (shrink)

Despite the immense societal importance of ethically designing artificial intelligence, little research on the public perceptions of ethical artificial intelligence principles exists. This becomes even more striking when considering that ethical artificial intelligence development has the aim to be human-centric and of benefit for the whole society. In this study, we investigate how ethical principles are weighted in comparison to each other. This is especially important, since simultaneously considering ethical principles is not only costly, but sometimes even impossible, as developers (...) must make specific trade-off decisions. In this paper, we give first answers on the relative importance of ethical principles given a specific use case—the use of artificial intelligence in tax fraud detection. The results of a large conjoint survey suggest that, by and large, German respondents evaluate the ethical principles as equally important. However, subsequent cluster analysis shows that different preference models for ethically designed systems exist among the German population. These clusters substantially differ not only in the preferred ethical principles but also in the importance levels of the principles themselves. We further describe how these groups are constituted in terms of sociodemographics as well as opinions on artificial intelligence. Societal implications, as well as design challenges, are discussed. Praised by President Richard Nixon as his favorite read for 1987, _The Search for Historical Meaning_ presents the postwar American conservative movement against a background of ideas with which it has only rarely been identified. This important book—updated with a new preface—examines the influence of Hegelian concepts on the historical attitudes and cultural judgments of prominent postwar conservatives who, because of their concern with personal freedom as a political and ontological value, denounced Hegel while ascribing their own Hegelian ideas to (...) less offensive sources. Gottfried argues that the lack of a true historical perspective was a serious defect in the postwar American conservative movement, and it grew worse in the years that followed. Obesity and poverty in childhood are widely studied phenomena and despite mixed results, some findings are without doubt: they come with various experiences of mental, physical and social harm, have therefore negative effects on the well-being of children, and they intersect in relation with race, class and gender. In this contribution we analyze child obesity and poverty from a philosophical social justice perspective, which has, to a large extent, so far neglected this topic. We show how they compromise social justice (...) and argue that there is an obligation to implement structural changes to assist the affected children and their families. However, we make also clear that such interventions must not happen in accordance to the current neoliberal fitness and health ideology and its related narrow individualism. (shrink)

En 1676, alors qu'il sejourne encore a Paris, Leibniz entreprend de composer un volumineux traite qui restera sans doute l'un de ses ecrits mathematiques les plus fortement charpentes: La quadrature arithmetique du cercle, de l'ellipse et de l'hyperbole et la trigonometrie sans tables qui en est le corollaire. Ce traite se presente comme un abrege exhaustif de la geometrie infinitesimale, dont Leibniz avait pu esperer qu'elle lui ouvrirait les portes de l'Academie des Sciences. Cependant, contraint de quitter la capitale avant (...) sa publication, il abandonnera derriere lui un ouvrage qui n'allait voir le jour qu'en 1993. Le probleme de la quadrature est pretexte a soulever plusieurs enjeux capitaux tant pour les mathematiques que pour la philosophie. Il permet notamment a Leibniz d'examiner avec une grande precision la question de la methode, des fondements, ainsi que des notions cruciales de rigueur et d'infini, tout en mettant en evidence leurs applications pratiques. Si la presente edition de ce texte foisonnant ne reproduit pas l'integralite des variantes, elle en propose une version corrigee et annotee, qui s'accompagne d'une traduction francaise en regard. Dieses Buch versammelt Essays zur Philosophie der Kindheit. Worin besteht eine gerechte Gesellschaft für Kinder? Sind Kinder besonders verletzbar? Was schulden wir minderjährigen Flüchtlingen oder Kindern in Armut? Was ist eine gute Jugend? Die Essays in diesem Buch stellen und beantworten diese Fragen aus Sicht einer Ethik der Kindheit.

Beschäftigt man sich systematisch mit der Konzeption von Gerechtigkeit für Kinder bzw. während der Kindheit, ist es hilfreich, drei verschiedene Fragen zu klären, die normalerweise in Hinblick auf Erwachsene diskutiert werden, doch auch für eine genauere Analyse der Ansprüche von Kindern relevant sind. Welche Güter sind für die Gerechtigkeitstheorie relevant? Nach welchen Prinzipien sollen diese Güter verteilt werden? Wer ist dafür verantwortlich, dass die angestrebte Güterverteilung verwirklicht wird? In dieser Einleitung umreißen wir kurz den gegenwärtigen Diskussionsstand, der in diesen drei (...) großen gerechtigkeitsrelevanten Themenfeldern hinsichtlich von Kindern besteht. Zunächst analysieren wir Ressourcen und Fähigkeiten als angemessene Metrik der Gerechtigkeit für Kinder. Hinsichtlich der Verteilungsprinzipien lassen sich vor allem egalitäre und suffizienztheoretische Herangehensweisen unterscheiden. Schließlich werden in Bezug auf die Frage nach den relevanten „Akteuren der Gerechtigkeit“ für Kinder hauptsächlich die Familie bzw. die Eltern und der Staat diskutiert. (shrink)

Die philosophische Forschung zu Fragen der Armut hat seit den 1970er Jahren stark an Quantität und Qualität gewonnen. Dieser Trend ist auch im deutschsprachigen Raum spürbar. Im Fokus der Beschäftigung stehen dabei zumeist Fragen der Ethik und politischen Philosophie, etwa jene nach der individuellen, kollektiven oder institutionellen Verantwortung gegenüber Menschen in Armut oder die Frage, worin das moralische Übel der Armut besteht.

ZusammenfassungIn diesem Text werde ich zwei Thesen entfalten: Erstens, dass romantische Liebe Teil einer guten Jugend ist. Liebe als Teil einer guten Jugend hat mehrere Bestandteile: Jugendliche sollten romantische Liebe erleben können, wenn sie es wollen. Sie sollten das Wissen und die Fähigkeiten erlangen, romantische Liebe zu verstehen und adäquat mit den positiven Potentialen und auch den Risiken umgehen zu können. Jugendliche sollten lernen, die möglichen Enttäuschungen, die mit romantischer Liebe verbunden sein können, adäquat zu verarbeiten und darin gegebenenfalls Unterstützung (...) erfahren. Jugendliche sollten darin befähigt werden, die sozialen und kulturellen Normen und Praktiken, die die Vorstellungen romantischer Liebe prägen, zu reflektieren und zu hinterfragen. Zweitens ist zu klären, welche moralischen Rechte und Pflichten die Eltern und staatliche Institutionen haben. Ich plädiere dafür, diese so zu verstehen, dass sie Jugendliche in der Erlangung und adäquaten Auslebung romantischer Liebe unterstützen und ihnen bei der Entwicklung dieser Fähigkeiten die notwendigen Ressourcen zur Verfügung stellen sollten.
