Important marine mammal areas (IMMAs)—‘discrete habitat areas, important for one or more marine mammal species, that have the potential to be delineated and managed for conservation’ (IUCN Marine Mammal Protected Areas Task Force 2018, p. 3)—were introduced in 2014 by the IUCN Marine Mammal Protected Areas Task Force to support marine mammal and wider ocean conservation. IMMAs provide decision-makers with a user-friendly, actionable tool to inform them of the whereabouts of habitat important for marine mammal survival. However, in view of (...) their non-prescriptive, evidence-based and biocentric nature, the conservation effectiveness of IMMAs is strictly dependent on politicians’ willingness to make use of them. It has been the customary task of advocacy non-governmental organisations to lobby decision-makers to stimulate respect for environmental law, but the scientific community is increasingly joining this effort. Scientists can effectively strengthen a healthy relationship between scientific objectivity and political advocacy without damaging the credibility of conservation science. Thus, those undertaking the identification of IMMAs can be among those responsible for strongly advocating the implementation of IMMAs and other conservation initiatives. (shrink)

Murayama and Jach critically evaluate the idea that motivation is a dynamic that determines behavior and propose alternatively that it might be an emergent property that people construe through perceived regularities in experience and action. The critique has value but fails to appreciate the progress that has been made in moving beyond the idea of which the authors are critical.

Several studies in experimental philosophy and semantics have shown that a substantial number of English speakers consider a statement true even if it does not align with the facts, as long as it is justified from the speaker's perspective. These findings challenge the prevailing view among philosophers that truth is uniformly based on a statement's correspondence to reality and suggest that for some speakers truth is sensitive to epistemic perspectives. In this study, we show that this behavior depends on how (...) the critical question assessing the statement's truth is phrased. When participants were asked whether the proposition itself is true (e.g., "Is it true that [the uttered proposition]?"), almost everyone answered negatively. It is when the original speaker was mentioned in the question (e.g., "Is what [the speaker] said true?" or "Is [the speaker]’s answer true?") that around half of the participants answered positively. We explore four possible explanations for this behavior: (1) "true" might be ambiguous between a basic correspondence sense and a coherence sense, which may be activated in some people by the explicit mentioning of the speaker; (2) "true" could be a context-sensitive expression with an implicit perspective parameter such that some speakers shift to the speaker’s perspective when prompted by the question; (3) those who select "true" might ad hoc relativize the term to the speaker’s perspective; (4) those who select "true" might unconsciously substitute it with "truthful". In addition, we discuss the implications of the findings for other philosophical discussions concerning norms of assertion, sincerity, and the theory of reference. (shrink)

This paper proposes a critical analysis of that interpretation of the Nāgārjunian doctrine of the two truths as summarized—by both Mark Siderits and Jay L. Garfield—in the formula: “the ultimate truth is that there is no ultimate truth”. This ‘semantic reading’ of Nāgārjuna’s theory, despite its importance as a criticism of the ‘metaphysical interpretations’, would in itself be defective and improbable. Indeed, firstly, semantic interpretation presents a formal defect: it fails to clearly and explicitly express that which it contains logically; (...) the previously mentioned formula must necessarily be completed by: “the conventional truth is that nothing is conventional truth”. Secondly, after having recognized what Siderits’ and Garfield’s analyses contain implicitly, other logical and philological defects in their position emerge: the existence of the ‘conventional’ would appear—despite the efforts of semantic interpreters to demonstrate quite the contrary—definitively inconceivable without the presupposition of something ‘real’; moreover, the number of verses in Nāgārjuna that are in opposition to the semantic interpretation (even if we grant semantic interpreters that these verses do not justify a metaphysical reconstruction of Nagarjuna’s doctrine) would seem too great and significant to be ignored. This article considers the function and value of the mythos in Plato's Statesman. As first, I recall the context of the story and its function within the framework of diairetic inquiry about the definition of the real politician. Secondly, I point out that the formulation of the myth is based on a series of traditional stories to which a historical-reconstructive method is applied. I then highlight the ways of reasoning used by the characters in order to reconstruct a rational and (...) plausible account from the mythical tradition. Finally, I try to show that the story, even though it cannot reach the truth of the most stable objects of knowledge, displays a certain degree of plausibility, based on the internal coherence, on the respect of a series of principles admitted as true and, eventually, on its correspondence with the mythical tradition. The Stoic theory of movement has never been the object of a deep investigation despite the considerable number of sources in Neoplatonist commentators. This paper explores for the first time the Stoic notion of ἐνέργεια, which plays a fundamental role in the Stoic conception of movement and generally in the characterization of interaction between bodies. I will show that the Stoics identified movement and activity, so that everything that is active is necessarily moved. This implies that the Stoics merely characterized (...) ἐνέργεια in a dynamic or kinetic sense, namely by connecting it with movement. In order to prove the coherence of this philosophical position to the Stoic doctrine, I will display the compatibility of Neoplatonists’ reports with other sources. Accordingly, I will claim that the Stoics conceived this peculiar sense of ἐνέργεια in reaction to Aristotle, who clearly distinguished between ἐνέργεια and κίνησις in his physical theory. (shrink)

Antonio Signorini’s contribution to the constitutive theory of non-linear elasticity is reconstructed and analyzed. Some uninformed opinions suggesting he had a minor role, lacking of significant results, are discussed and refuted. It is shown that Signorini should be rightly credited for being among the first scholars aware of the central problem of non-linear elasticity: the determination of the general form of the elastic potential.

Dabei wird Vico sowohl als Denker seines Zeitalters als auch in der Auseinandersetzung mit Autoren wie Suárez, Bacon, Descartes etc. gelesen und es ergeben sich immer wieder Bezüge zu aktuellen Debatten.

This paper examines the contribution of Gabrio Piola to continuum mechanics.Though he was undoubtably a skilled mathematician and a good mechanician, little is commonly known about his papers within the international scientific community, principally because a large part of the Italian school of mechanics was isolated in the first half of the XIXth century.We examine and comment on Piola’s most important papers, and compare them with those of his contemporaries Cauchy, Poisson and Kirchhoff.

In the years of his maturity Fichte seems to go beyond the self-sufficiency of natural rights theories towards a philosophy of practice more consonant with the developments of his Doctrine of the Science. Este texto se propone afrontar el problema del método en relación con los conceptos políticos necesarios para pensar Europa. Esto implica una reflexión de tipo filosófico- político y un cuadro de orientación histórico-conceptual. Se hace necesaria la referencia a un extenso trabajo crítico acerca de los conceptos políticos modernos que pone en cuestión su pretendida universalidad sin dejar por ello de discutir a la vez con el pensamiento de una larga tradición que encuentra su origen en el mundo griego. No (...) parece posible afrontar y comprender los problemas surgidos a partir del proceso que lleva a la Unión Europea a través de los conceptos que han dado lugar a la doctrina del Estado y que vertebran las constituciones modernas. Estos conceptos nacen en el seno de las doctrinas del contrato social y del derecho natural y resultan funcionales para una forma política que tiene como polos inseparables los derechos de los individuos y la soberanía del cuerpo político. Europa, precisamente por la pluralidad de los miembros que la constituyen, requiere, por una parte, de una superación del concepto de soberanía de los Estados y, por otra, debe no pensarse a sí misma como una nueva soberanía, o como una nueva y más amplia dimensión estatal. La superación de la conceptualidad política que se condensa en la soberanía comporta al mismo tiempo el repensar aquellos conceptos —como individuo, igualdad, libertad— que, en el modo en que han sido pensados a partir del iusnaturalismo moderno, aparecen como los fundamentos lógicos de la soberanía. Este ensayo se centra en la democracia entendida como forma política, como constitución democrática. El concepto de poder del pueblo indica, por una parte, un poder absoluto al que someterse, y, por otra, tiende a negar la sumisión en cuanto tal. Los dos conceptos fundamentales de la constitución democrática, la soberanía del pueblo y la representación política , que surgen para mostrar cómo el poder es de todos, en realidad crean un hiato estructural que impide pensar en la dimensión política (...) de los ciudadanos. En la base de la aporía se encuentra el ideal de la libertad y la libertad incondicional del individuo, la cual se afirma mediante la negación de la relación de gobierno. Esta incondicionalidad de la voluntad se convierte en el elemento fundador de la racionalidad formal propia de la legitimación democrática. Sólo la conciencia de la centralidad de la cuestión del gobierno, incluso en el interior de la democracia y más allá de su dispositivo legitimador, puede mostrarnos la vía para repensar a los ciudadanos como sujetos capaces de acción política. Die vorliegende Hommage-Schrift hat das Ziel, Hans Albert – einen der bedeutendsten Wissenschaftsphilosophen und der Hauptvertreter des Kritischen Rationalismus im deutschen Sprachraum – durch biographisch-intellektuelle Zeugnisse zu ehren und die Bedeutung seines Denkens würdigend hervorzuheben. Der Band enthält Beiträge von Kollegen, Schülern und Freunden Hans Alberts in deutscher und englischer Sprache, in denen diese in unterschiedlicher Weise über ihre Beziehung zu Hans Albert berichten und beschreiben, inwiefern dessen Version des Kritischen Rationalismus sie beeinflusst hat. Auf diese Weise wird seine Denkrichtung (...) aus der Perspektive verschiedener Fachdisziplinen wie etwa Wissenschaftstheorie, Ökonomie, Jurisprudenz, Soziologie, Psychologie, Ethik und Theologie betrachtet. Die verschiedenen Beiträge beleuchten nicht nur historische Hintergründe und verschiedene Lebensphasen des Geehrten; sie zeichnen auch die Entwicklung seines Denkens nach und machen seine lebhafte Beteiligung an philosophischen und wissenschaftlichen Auseinandersetzungen seiner Zeit nachvollziehbar. By means of a critical reinterpretation of the famous short story by Herman Melville titled “Bartleby, the Scrivener,” I propose a psycho-anthropological explanation of work behaviors, relationships in work environments, and their psychopathological repercussions. The article notably examines behaviors and work relationships connecting them as outcomes of single individuals' efforts to mentalize ideological–cultural models determining them in a given historical moment. A reductively individualistic interpretation is criticized, which is typically present in clinical and work psychology and ascribes to the single (...) person presumed psychical deficits and exclusively looks in his/her personal history for causes of disadaptive behaviors and antecedents of psychopathological formations.
