In this book G. A. Cohen examines the libertarian principle of self-ownership, which says that each person belongs to himself and therefore owes no service or product to anyone else. This principle is used to defend capitalist inequality, which is said to reflect each person's freedom to do as as he wishes with himself. The author argues that self-ownership cannot deliver the freedom it promises to secure, thereby undermining the idea that lovers of freedom should embrace capitalism and the inequality (...) that comes with it. He goes on to show that the standard Marxist condemnation of exploitation implies an endorsement of self-ownership, since, in the Marxist conception, the employer steals from the worker what should belong to her, because she produced it. Thereby a deeply inegalitarian notion has penetrated what is in aspiration an egalitarian theory. Purging that notion from socialist thought, he argues, enables construction of a more consistent egalitarianism. (shrink)

Strokes of Luck provides a detailed and wide-ranging examination of the role of luck in moral and political philosophy. The first part tackles debates in moral luck, which are concerned with the assignment of blameworthiness to individuals who are separated only by lucky differences. ‘Anti-luckists’ think that an agent who, for example, attempts and succeeds in an assassination and an agent who attempts and fails are equally blameworthy. This book defends an ‘anti-anti-luckist’ argument, according to which the successful assassin is (...) more blameworthy than the unsuccessful one. Moreover, the successful assassin is, all things equal, a worse person than the unsuccessful one. The worldly outcomes of our acts can make an all-important difference, not only to how bad our acts can be deemed, but to how bad we are. The second part enters into debates about distributive justice. It is argued that the attempt to neutralize luck in the distribution of advantages among individuals does not deserve its prominence in political philosophy: the ‘luck egalitarian’ programme is flawed. A better way forward is to re-invest in John Rawls’s ‘justice as fairness, which demonstrates a superior way of taming the bad effects of luck and unchosen disadvantage. (shrink)

In this article, we examine how affect influences judgment and thought, but also how thought transforms affect. The general thesis is that the nature and impact of affective reactions depends largely on their objects. We view affect as a representation of value, and its consequences as dependent on its object or what it is about. Within a review of relevant literature and a discussion of the nature of emotion, we focus on the role of the object of affect in governing (...) both the nature of emotional reactions and the impact of affect and emotion on cognition and action. Although emotion is always about the here and now, the capacity for abstract thought means that the human here and now includes imagination as well as perception. The increased interest in exorcisms and demonology should be moderated by a proper understanding of the relationship between psychology and spirituality. There is an important link between psychological aberrations and possession, but too often and too quickly, a person’s mental health is dismissed or overlooked in favor of a diagnosis of demonic possession. The Church’s ritual of exorcism can be properly used only after psychological discernment, episcopal approval, and personal assent. Most priests are not prepared for the role of exorcist (...) and should spend their time more effectively addressing pastoral needs. The belief in demons is part of biblical witness and Catholic history. At the same time, we must avoid any tendency toward redemption by exorcism. (shrink)

This article aims to point out two seminal reflections on interlocution: Frostin’s insightful late-1980s analysis of ‘Third World’ liberation theologies and his contention that the decisive question for liberation theologies was the question of who the primary dialogue partners of liberation theology have been and should be, and Vuyani Vellem’s more recent millennial reflection on how South African Black Theology after liberation has grappled and should grapple with the notion of interlocution. My choice of these two scholars is not idiosyncratic, (...) for Vellem uses Frostin’s work as one of his starting points. I build on this conversation, reflecting with Vellem on how we might understand the issue of interlocution within black and kindred liberation and prophetic theologies today. My particular emphasis is on biblical hermeneutics; therefore, my contribution to the conversation frames my reflections within a particular phase of Black Theology in which the Bible is most significantly problematised, what Tinyiko Maluleke refers to as the second phase of Black Theology. The conundrum Itumeleng Mosala poses for Black Theology is how the recognition of the Bible as itself – intrinsically, inherently and indelibly – ‘a site of struggle’ reconfigures interlocution. Mosala, I will argue, forces us to not only ask who we interpret with when we do Black Theology, but also ask which biblical texts we read, for not all biblical texts offer resources for liberation.Contribution: This article makes a contribution to the VukaniBantuTsohangBatho – Spirituality of Black Liberation collection in which the work of Vuyani Vellem is celebrated and critically engaged. Die Genese einer im rechten Sinne verstandenen „Culturwissenschaft“, als einer Theorie, die es erlaubt, die Probleme des Prinzipienrelativismus’ in Logik, Ethik, Religion etc. anzugehen, beleuchtet Gerald Hartung in seinem Beitrag „Völkerpsychologie und Sprachwissenschaft – eine Kontroverse um die Grundlagen der Kulturwissenschaft“ im Ausgang von Wundts Völkerpsychologie, indem er die Diskussionen rekonstruiert, die sich um dieselbe in den Jahren zwischen 1860 und 1901 ereigneten. Als Ausgangspunkt für seine Untersuchungen nimmt Hartung die von Steinthal und Lazarus herausgegebene „Zeitschrift für Völkerpsychologie und (...) Sprachwissenschaft“, in deren Bemühungen um eine Methoden- und Gegenstandsbestimmung der Völkerpsychologie, gleichsam das „Profil einer ‚Culturwissenschaft‘“ sichtbar wird. Der grundlegenden Skizzierung des Programms der Zeitschrift in Hinblick auf die Frage nach der Funktion der Sprache für die Genese von Geist und Kultur im Allgemeinen folgt die Verortung der konstitutiven Funktion von Sprache innerhalb Wundts Völkerpsychologie, die Hartung aus den Kontroversen zwischen Wundt und Paul, der Kritik Steinthals an Wundt und Paul als auch der späten Auseinandersetzung zwischen Delbrück und Wundt herausarbeitet. So zeigt Hartung, dass Delbrück 1901 keinerlei Interesse mehr an der Völkerpsychologie hatte, da diese wie auch deren Organ längst in der Völkerkunde aufgegangen war. Während Wundt im Ausgang von Delbrücks Vorstoß erneuert die Verbundenheit von Psychologie und Sprachwissenschaft hervorhob und die Psychologie nicht allein als eigenständige Disziplin, sondern darüber hinaus als Leitwissenschaft der Sprachwissenschaft zu etablieren suchte, sah Steinthal in der Völkerpsychologie – so Hartung abschließend – die Möglichkeit einer Kulturwissenschaft, in der die „Gebilde des objektiven Geistes“ behandelt werden.
