Techno-solutionism a Fact or Farce? A Critical Assessment of GenAI in Open and Distance Education.Helen Titilola Olojede - 2024 - Journal of Ethics in Higher Education 4:193-216.
Techno-solutionism (Ts) amplifies academic integrity issues endemic to using Generative AI in Open and Distance education (ODE). It (Ts) induces in Higher education (HE) the disposition that technology can and should be employed in every aspect of teaching, learning, and assessment. The prevalence of Ts in ODE and the consequence of undermining academic integrity is found in the surge in published papers. A 2023 study by Nature of over 1600 scientists reports that nearly 30% use GenAI to write papers, (...)

How will the state think with ChatGPT? The challenges of generative artificial intelligence for public administrations.Thomas Cantens - forthcoming - AI and Society:1-12.
This article explores the challenges surrounding generative artificial intelligence (GenAI) in public administrations and its impact on human‒machine interactions within the public sector. First, it aims to deconstruct the reasons for distrust in GenAI in public administrations. The risks currently linked to GenAI in the public sector are often similar to those of conventional AI. However, while some risks remain pertinent, others are less so because GenAI has limited explainability, which, in return, limits its uses in (...)

Using text-to-image generative AI to create storyboards: Insights from a college psychology classroom.Shantanu Tilak, Blake Bagley, Jadalynn Cantu, Mya Cosby, Grace Engelbert, Ja'Kaysiah Hammonds, Gabrielle Hickman, Aaron Jackson, Bryce Jones, Kadie Kennedy, Stephanie Kennedy, Austin King, Ryan Kozlej, Allyssa Mortenson, Muller Sebastien, Julia Najjar, Sydney Queen, Milo Schuehle, Nolan Schulte, Emily Schwarz, Joshua Shearn, Kalyse Williams & Malik Williams - 2024 - Journal of Sociocybernetics 19 (1):1-42.
This participatory study, conducted in an introductory psychology class, recounts self-reflections of 22 undergraduate students and their instructor engaging in an GenAI-mediated storyboard generation process. It relies on Gordon Pask’s conversation theory, structuring out the nature of interactions between students, instructor, and GenAI, and then uses a qualitative narrative to describe these conversational feedback loops constituting the creation of draft and final storyboards. Results suggest students engaged in cyclical feedback driven processes to master their creations, used elements of (...)

Breaking the Wheel, Credibility, and Hermeneutical Injustice: A Response to Harris.Taylor Matthews - 2024 - Philosophy and Technology 37 (4):1-6.
In this short paper, I respond to Keith Raymond Harris’ paper “Synthetic Media, The Wheel, and the Burden of Proof”. In particular, I examine his arguments against two prominent approaches employed to deal with synthetic media such as deepfakes and other GenAI content, namely, the “reactive” and “proactive” approaches. In the first part, I raise a worry about the problem Harris levels at the reactive approach, before providing a constructive way of expanding his worry regarding the proactive approach.

The potential effects of deepfakes on news media and entertainment.Ebba Lundberg & Peter Mozelius - forthcoming - AI and Society:1-12.
Deepfakes are synthetic media, such as pictures, music and videos, created with generative artificial intelligence (GenAI) tools, a technique that builds upon machine learning and multi-layered neural networks trained on large datasets. Today, anyone can create deepfakes online, without any knowledge about the underpinning technology. This fact opens up creative opportunities at the same time as it creates individual and societal challenges. Some identified challenges are fake news, bullying, defamation, media manipulation and democracy damage. The aim of this study (...)

  19. Digital Homunculi: Reimagining Democracy Research with Generative Agents.Petr Špecián - manuscript
The pace of technological change continues to outstrip the evolution of democratic institutions, creating an urgent need for innovative approaches to democratic reform. However, the experimentation bottleneck - characterized by slow speed, high costs, limited scalability, and ethical risks - has long hindered progress in democracy research. This paper proposes a novel solution: employing generative artificial intelligence (GenAI) to create synthetic data through the simulation of digital homunculi, GenAI-powered entities designed to mimic human behavior in social contexts. By (...)

Generative Artificial Intelligence as Hypercommons: Ethics of Authorship and Ownership.Gazi Islam & Michelle Greenwood - 2024 - Journal of Business Ethics 192 (4):659-663.
In this editorial essay, we argue that Generative Artificial Intelligence programs (GenAI) draw on what we term a “hypercommons”, involving collectively produced inputs and labour that are largely invisible or untraceable. We argue that automatizing the exploitation of common inputs, in ways that remix and reconfigure them, can lead to a crisis of academic authorship in which the moral agency involved in scholarly production is increasingly eroded. We discuss the relationship between the hypercommons and authorship in terms of moral (...)
