The founding text of modern hermeneutics. Written by the philosopher and theologian Friedrich Schleiermacher as a method for the interpretation and textual criticism of the New Testament, it develops ideas about language and the interpretation of texts that are in many respects still unsurpassed and are becoming current in the contemporary philosophy of language. Contrary to the traditional view of Schleiermacher as a theorist of empathetic interpretation, in this text he offers a view of understanding that acknowledges both the (...) structurally and historically determined aspects of language and the need to take account of the activity of the individual subject in the constitution of meaning. This volume offers the text in a new translation by Andrew Bowie, together with related writings on secular hermeneutics and on language, and an introduction that places the texts in the context of Schleiermacher's philosophy as a whole. Ever since the first meeting of the proponents of the emerging Logical Empiricism in 1923, there existed philosophical differences as well as personal rivalries between the groups in Berlin and Vienna, headed by Hans Reichenbach and Moritz Schlick, respectively. Early theoretical tensions between Schlick and Reichenbach were caused by Reichenbach’s Kantian roots, who himself regarded the Vienna Circle as a sort of anti-realist “positivist school”—as he described it in his Experience and Prediction. One result of this divergence was Schlick’s preference (...) of Carnap over Reichenbach for a position at the University of Vienna, and his decision not to serve as a co-editor with Reichenbach for the journal Erkenntnis that they jointly established in 1930. A second split rooted in different views on induction and probability, which culminated in the Hans Reichenbach’s refusal to serve as an invited author on probability within the International Encyclopedia of Unified Science series ed. by Rudolf Carnap, Charles Morris and Otto Neurath from 1938 onwards. In this regard it is remarkable that also Richard von Mises, who was the second leading figure of Logical Empiricism in Turkish exile, criticized the theory of probability put forward by his former Berlin colleague. In this paper I analyse this controversial exchange, drawing on the relevant correspondence and asking whether these philosophical differences were a typical feature of the pluralism inherent in Logical Empiricism in general. Wenn Physiker davon sprechen, dass sich unsere Sonne eines entfernten Tages in einen roten Riesen und noch viel später in einen weißen Zwerg verwandeln wird, oder davon, dass sich Elementarteilchen auf allen möglichen Wegen gleichzeitig von einem Punkt A zu einem Punkt B bewegen, kommt man schwerlich umhin, nach der Quintessenz dieser und ähnlicher Aussagen zu fragen. Auch wenn Psychologen leger erklären, dass Erinnerungen im Gehirn gespeichert werden, so möchte man wissen, was gemeint ist. Eine erste und natürlich erscheinende Möglichkeit (...) bestünde darin, diese Aussagen wörtlich zu verstehen, womit sich eine ganze Reihe an weiterführenden Fragen ergeben würde: Wie kann es sein, dass sich bestimmte Gegenstände zur selben Zeit an zwei verschiedenen Orten aufhalten? Können Informationen auf biologischem Material gespeichert werden werden wie Mais in einem Speicher oder wie Daten auf einer Festplatte? Die zweite Möglichkeit, die mir viel mehr zu versprechen scheint, besteht darin, danach zu suchen, was Physiker oder Psychologen eigentlich sagen wollen, ihnen also gewissermaßen zu unterstellen, dass sie sich in vereinfachender und irreführender Weise ausdrücken. Damit entsteht konkret die Aufgabe, zu erklären, wie die zuvor genannten Sätze interpretiert werden können. Ich möchte vorschlagen, die genannten Aussagen metaphorisch zu verstehen. Physiker sprechen zwar nicht von der Schwarzes-Loch-Metapher und auch Chemiker sprechen nicht von der Kohlenwasserstoffketten-Metapher, doch immerhin sprechen Psychologen von der Computer-Metapher. Auch in der Wissenschaftstheorie wird die Auffassung vertreten, dass einige naturwissenschaftliche Beschreibungen metaphorisch zu verstehen sind. Diese Metaphern spielen sowohl bei der Entstehung von Theorien als auch bei ihrer Verbreitung eine wichtige Rolle. Ausgangspunkt einer Diskussion kann die Tatsache sein, dass natürliche Sprache mit metaphorischen Ausdrücken durchsetzt ist, eine ausschließlich wörtliche Redeweise wäre kaum vorstellbar; und wir verstehen die metaphorische Ausdrucksweise im Allgemeinen. Daran anknüpfen muss man sich die Frage stellen, warum wir Metaphern auch bei der Formulierung von wissenschaftlichen Theorien verwenden. Leistet die Metapher einen Beitrag zum Erkenntnisprozess, der durch eine vorwiegend wörtliche Ausdrucksweise nicht oder nur mit erheblich größerem Aufwand erreicht werden könnte? Warum nimmt die Metapher bei der Formulierung wissenschaftlicher Theorien eine zentrale Stellung ein? Ein zweiter Blick macht sichtbar, dass in wissenschaftlichen Theorien zwei Arten von Metaphern verwendet werden: theoriekonstituierenden Metaphern und nicht-theoriekonstituierenden Metaphern. Eine nicht-theoriekonstituierende Metapher kann vollständig eliminiert werden, d. h. das, was durch die Metapher zum Ausdruck gebracht wird, kann auch wörtlich gesagt werden. Wenn jemand von Kraftfeldern spricht, so denkt er dabei an Dinge, die mit Maisfeldern nur eine entfernte Ähnlichkeit aufweisen. Die Metapher dient dazu, die Theorie anschaulich vorstellbar zu machen. Auf eine theoriekonstituierende Metapher kann nicht verzichtet werden, sie ist ein integrativer Bestandteil einer wissenschaftlichen Theorie. Der Kerngedanke der Computer-Metapher, nämlich dass das menschliche Gehirn ein informationsverarbeitender Mechanismus ist, kann nicht in wörtlicher Weise formuliert werden. In beiden Fällen scheint es mir gerechtfertigt zu sein, von erkenntnisleitenden Metaphern zu sprechen. Nicht-theoriekonstituierende Metaphern sind erkenntnisleitend, da sie einen überblicksartigen und schnellen Zugang zu einem neuen Gegenstandsbereich bieten. Theoriekonstituierende Metaphern sind in einem viel stärkeren Sinn erkenntnisleitend, sie der Ausgangspunkt der wissenschaftlichen Erkenntnis. (shrink)

Praxis investigates both the existing practices of international politics and relations during and after the Cold War, and the issue of whether problems of praxis can be subjected to a 'theoretical treatment'. The book comes in two parts: the first deals with the constitution of international relations and the role of theoretical norms in guiding decisions, in areas such as sanctions, the punishment of international crimes, governance and 'constitutional' concern, the second is devoted to 'theory building'. While a 'theorization' of (...) praxis has often been attempted, Kratochwil argues that such endeavours do not attend to certain important elements characteristic of practical choices. Praxis presents a shift from the accepted international relations standard of theorizing, by arguing for the analysis of policy decisions made in non-ideal conditions within a broader framework of practical choices, emphasizing both historicity and contingency. If one analyzes the procedures and logic of scientific explanation and the methods of generating and justifying scientific knowledge, one recognizes the prototype of philosophy of science found in Aristotle’s inductive and deductive procedure that is described in his Posterior Analytics, Physics and Metaphysics, where heviewed scientific inquiry as a progression from observations to general principles and (...) back to observation. He maintained that the scientist should induce explanatory principles from the phenomena to be explained, and then deduce statements about the phenomena from premisses which include these principles. We distinguish between the paradigm of game theory in which individuals act directly and that of social choice in which an impartial observer acts on the basis of social preferences, which in turn are derived from individual preferences. Much of the critique of Sen brought forward by Buchanan and de Jasay and Kliemt rests on a confusion of these two paradigms.

There is an ever increasing shortage of human organ transplants in Germany. This paper aims at understanding the reasons for that shortage better and then discusses various ways to overcome it. After estimating the potential supply of donor organs it is discussed why actual supply remains far below potential supply. Insufficient reimbursement for hospitals, a lack of incentives to donate, and mistaken donation rules are diagnosed to cause the shortage. Thus, organ shortage is due not to natural constraints but to (...) inappropriate social institutions. Introducing a presumed consent rule, reciprocity in organ allocation, better payments for hospitals and for donors seem potential remedies. (shrink)
