In this study, we use temporally aligned word embeddings and a large diachronic corpus of English to quantify language change in a data-driven, scalable way, which is grounded in language use. We show a unique and reliable relation between measures of language change and age of acquisition (AoA) while controlling for frequency, contextual diversity, concreteness, length, dominant part of speech, orthographic neighborhood density, and diachronic frequency variation. We analyze measures of language change tackling both the change in lexical representations and (...) the change in the relation between lexical representations and the words with the most similar usage patterns, showing that they capture different aspects of language change. Our results show a unique relation between language change and AoA, which is stronger when considering neighborhood-level measures of language change: Words with more coherent diachronic usage patterns tend to be acquired earlier. The results support theories positing a link between ontogenetic and ethnogenetic processes in language. (shrink)

This paper is aimed to understand the state of the art and the resulting consequences of the legal framework in Europe, with regard to the protection of children's data. Especially when they interact with networked and robotic toys, like in 'My friend Cayla' case. In order to evaluate the practical implications of the use of IoT devices by children or teenager users, the first part of the paper presents an analysis of the international guiding principles of the protection of minors, (...) a category which enjoys a higher level of protection of their fundamental rights, due to their condition of lack of physical and psychological maturity. Secondly, the focus is moved upon the protection of personal data of children. Only after confronting previous data protection legal instruments and having compared them with the novelties set forth in General Data Protection Regulation, it is reasonable to assume that new provisions such as "privacy by design" principle, adequacy of security measures and codes of conduct, can support data controllers in ensuring compliance in the field of IoT toys. In conclusion, the paper supports a view of Data Protection Authorities as a relevant player in enhancing these renovated tools in order to achieve the protection of children's rights, as to ensure their substantial protection against the threats of the interconnected world. Éclaircissements sur le titre et les limites de la communication.Le problème de Dieu se pose comme problème cosmologique ou comme problème logico-formel. Le problème de Dieu comme expérience intérieure étant posé, on rejette la chose en soi de l’ancienne métaphysique, mais on critique la prétention de la philosophie moderne de l’immanence, qui veut résoudre toute réalité dans l’activité du sujet, tout en lui reconnaissant le mérite d’avoir montré explicitement que la chose en soi était insoutenable. Nier la chose en soi (...) ne veut pourtant pas dire nier la transcendance de Dieu, mais admettre que Dieu est une réalité présente à notre conscience, en entendant cette présence comme connaissance d’une réalité qui nous dépasse. On conclut que la transcendance de Dieu est le problème de l’expérience intérieure et qu’il se pose comme problème moral. (shrink)

Over recent years, various semantics have been proposed for dealing with updates in the setting of logic programs. The availability of different semantics naturally raises the question of which are most adequate to model updates. A systematic approach to face this question is to identify general principles against which such semantics could be evaluated. In this paper we motivate and introduce a new such principle the refined extension principle. Such principle is complied with by the stable model semantics for (single) (...) logic programs. It turns out that none of the existing semantics for logic program updates, even though generalisations of the stable model semantics, comply with this principle. For this reason, we define a refinement of the dynamic stable model semantics for Dynamic Logic Programs that complies with the principle. (shrink)

Since the advent of drug regulation in 1962, regulatory agencies have been in the practice of using strict standards to test the safety and efficacy of medical treatments and products. Regulatory agencies, such as the FDA, demand two full-fledged Randomized Clinical Trials demonstrating the safety and effectiveness of drugs to grant its marketing authorization. On the contrary, surgical treatments are left completely unregulated. There are several reasons explaining this difference, and all of them point to the difficulty of conducting well-designed (...) RCTs in surgery. However, we argue that none of these arguments is decisive and that, under certain conditions, surgical RCTs can be morally justified and methodologically sound. Although ethical constraints restrict the number of testable surgical procedures, and surgical trials might not be as dependable as pharmaceutical RCTs, our analysis suggests that, in certain cases, it is possible to obtain high-quality evidence about the safety and efficacy of surgical procedures. Untested surgical treatments may prove to be ineffective and harm patients. Therefore, regulation of surgical procedures seems not only morally acceptable and able to provide reliable scientific evidence, but also desirable and justified from an ethical-political standpoint. The aim of this paper is to discuss Husserl's defence of transcendental phenomenology in the face of the attitude of materialization and the naturalization of consciousness, which dominates the attitude that underlies the formation of the natural sciences. Inheriting some elements of classical German philosophy, Husserl understands that it is only through the a priori that philosophy can be realized as a rigorous science. Our analysis will initially be developed through a critical discussion of the problem that Husserl identifies in (...) the naturalistic sciences based on the natural attitude, which is the materialization of consciousness. Next, we will show how, in relation to the project of building a philosophy as a rigorous science, naturalism, which is naive in its foundation, is the main obstacle to be overcome because of the consequences that can arise from it, implying currents such as psychologism, materialism and positivism. Finally, we will point out the way in which Husserl defends transcendental phenomenology against the naivety of natural science, which remains trapped in empirical facts and makes them the ultimate criterion for attesting to truth. El gran zoo (1984), del poeta cubano Nicolás Guillén, ofrece distintas representaciones sobre el Caribe. El artículo argumenta que el texto de Nicolás Guillén se inscribe dentro del movimiento literario hispanoamericano de la neovanguardia. Luego, se examinan algunas características formales del texto, tomando como ejemplo los poemas “El sueño” y “Guitarra”. Otro poema que se estudia con más detenimiento es “El tenor”, el cual parodia la división entre la alta cultura y la cultura popular.
