Este libro reúne cinco ensayos originales sobre distintas facetas de la empresa intelectual de Francisco Giner de los Ríos (1839-1915). Se trata de hacer justicia a la variedad y enjundia de sus intereses, como ponen de relieve sus títulos: El concepto de estado individual y su relevancia biopolítica, La idea de arte en F. Giner de los Ríos y sus implicaciones en la vida social, El pensamiento pedagógico-musical de Francisco Giner de los Ríos, El krausismo gineriano y (...) la cuestión de América. Encabezado por un jugoso prólogo acerca de ciertos avatares de la investigación krausológica, este libro quiere contribuir a dilatar y ahondar nuestra imagen del pensador krausista español. El trasfondo de su concepción ética del derecho, el encaje del institucionismo en su teoría de la sociedad, su estimación de la función social del arte, su dedicación a la estética y a la pedagogía musicales, o la repercusión americanista de su cosmopolitismo, constituyen algunas de su claves principales. El presente artículo trata de ofrecer un análisis detenido de las similitudes y diferencias que pueden establecerse entre el concepto de soberanía que formulan F. Giner y F. Suárez. En primer lugar, analizaremos los matices que presenta el concepto de corpus mysticum a fin de ahondar en el fondo democrático que implica esta idea. En segundo lugar, trataremos de dar cuenta de este fenómeno de recuperación del legado de los iusnaturalistas clásicos hispanos que fue llevado a cabo, paradójicamente, no (...) desde quienes se presentaban como tradicionalistas, sino desde las premisas reformadoras y liberales krausistas, lo cual auspició una lectura renovadora, en clave esencialmente igualitaria y democrática, de sus doctrinas. Por último, ahondaremos en su empeño común por revalorizar el papel social y democrático de las instituciones políticas tradicionales hispanas, cuya lectura nos devuelve un paisaje políticamente pluralista y democrático. Rosen's penetrating study provides a new assessment of British philhellenism and examines for the first time the relationship between Bentham's theory of constitutional government and the emerging liberalism of the 1820s. Here’s a false generalization with manifestly false consequences: all people who differ by one millimeter in height from a short person are themselves short. Why are we inclined to believe it? Boundary-shifters, usually lumped together under the heading “contextualists”, say that we believe the false generalization because when we consider any instance, that instance is true at the time of our consideration. Critics complain that the explanation is no good, for (i) if it were, then fallacious inferences would be rampant; (...) (ii) if it were, then we would always generalize from instances that we knew to be true at the time we considered them. But, they say, fallacious inferences are not rampant and we do not always generalize from the instances. Responses: (i) boundary-shifters require only that weakly fallacious inferences are rampant, and indeed they are; (ii) generalizing from the instances is both natural and explanatory, albeit defeasible.
