Más allá de lo que nos aparece como un plano de convergencia entre ambos pensamientos, queremos también enfatizar los puntos de divergencia y las aporías distintas que ellos conllevan, ver cómo se podría empezar a superarlas e iniciar un posible diálogo entre ambos autores.

Jan Patočka holds that both the Husserlian and the Heideggerian descriptions of history remain abstract because they lack an authentic reflection on historical sense’s appearing, which presupposes a description of the transition from the nonhistorical and prehistorical states of humanity to its final historical state. Nevertheless, it seems that Patočka would confront an internal aporia here because, even if he sought to think the continuity of these three movements, he tends to affirm the rupture between them. To overcome that aporia, (...) it becomes necessary to formulate the hypothesis according to which the prehistorical is characterized by a repression of sense’s problematic character, whereas the historical as such is characterized by a conversion of consciousness toward this problematic character. The work of Hans Jonas’ has been largely overlooked by environmental philosophers. His Principle of Responsibility can help guide effective development of political institutions for environmental purposes. It is possible to use this principle to develop a deliberative and environmental conception of democracy. Some implications of the social contract framework of deliberative democracy show that Jonas’ conceptualization of responsibility leads to an environmental and deliberative conception of democracy by accommodating different citizens’ senses of the good in terms of an environmentally (...) conceived global governance. Should we understand the biological philosophy of Hans Jonas as a phenomenology for unveiling the phenomenon of life or as a kind of Hegelian metaphysics that presents life as a substantial principle? To answer that question, we need to deal first with the question of our access to other living beings and then with the problem of the spiritualization of the concept of evolution. Hans Jonas (1903-1993), philosophe juif allemand, eleve de Husserl, Heidegger et Bultmann, ami de Hannah Arendt, successivement etabli en Palestine, au Canada et a New-York, a elabore une pensee originale, trop souvent recue dans la dispersion. On le connait tantot pour ses travaux sur la Gnose, tantot pour son livre Le Concept de Dieu apres Auschwitz, ou encore sa biologie philosophique, ou enfin le principe responsabilite qu'il a formule. On se propose ici d'exposer les grands themes de cette oeuvre - (...) le nihilisme gnostique, l'enracinement dans le monde materiel, la refondation ethique - en prenant le concept de vie pour fil directeur parce qu'il donne a cette oeuvre plurielle son foyer et son unite. C'est en effet la decouverte d'un air de famille entre l'esprit de la Gnose et la pensee heideggerienne de l'existence qui conduit Hans Jonas a prendre conscience de l'oubli de la vie par la philosophie et a en repenser le concept dans un dialogue avec les donnees de la biologie. Fort d'une philosophie de la vie ainsi concue, il peut alors prendre en charge les defis contemporains lances par la technique en proposant une ethique de la responsabilite, qui fixe des obligations a l'egard de la vie et des generations futures. Jean-Paul Sartre and Jan Patočka claim to go beneath the phenomenal correlation between the subject and the world discovered by Husserl in order to account for it from a more fundamental plane. Their going below the “universal a priori of correlation” allows them to describe it more thoroughly. But we wish to show that Sartre’s description remains dependent on a philosophical realism which prevents him from accounting for the genesis of the correlation. Patočka, however, achieves just this thanks to his (...) conception of an originary appearing. To verify this thesis, we will investigate the status of the body in both authors, so far as a successful account of the body should ensure the connection between the original plane and the openness to the world characteristic of the subject. Recognizing this function in the body, we ask if either Sartre’s or Patočka’s philosophy grants to the body the place it deserves and suggest that only Patočka achieves this, while Sartre is prevented from doing so by his realism. Quisiera mostrar como su Principio de Responsabilidad pueda ayudarnos a guiar el desarrollo efectivo de instituciones públicas orientadas hacia metas ambientales. Efectivamente, se puede usar el Principio de Responsabilidad para desarrollar una concepción deliberativa y ambiental de la democracia. Por ende, después de recordar unos aspectos esenciales del Principio jonasiano de Responsabilidad, tomaré en consideración sus implicaciones para el cuadro socio-contractual de la democracia deliberativa. Die Rezeption, die die Arbeit von Hans Jonas in Frankreich erlebt hat, wurde hauptsächlich durch die Zeitachse der Übersetzungen seiner Bücher bestimmt. Das Prinzip Verantwortung wurde 1990 von Jean Greisch unter dem Titel Le principe responsabilité veröffentlicht und diese Übersetzung hat zweifellos das Interesse der französischen Intellektuellen für Jonas geweckt. Es ist allerdings zum Teil heftig kritisiert worden – insbesondere wegen seines kantischen Charakters gab es Diskussionen.

Après avoir restitué le mouvement, en vertu duquel le philosophe expose dans Le Principe responsabilité une éthique qui s’applique à la vie et en provient, cet ouvrage justifie le tournant médical opéré par Hans Jonas dans Technik, Medizin und Ethik. Cela ouvre une réflexion en quatre temps. En premier lieu, il faut faire un diagnostic éthique du rôle de la technique au sein de la recherche scientifique. En second lieu, il faut se demander si l’accélération de nos progrès technologiques ne (...) modifie pas la signification de la médecine, ce qui requiert une interrogation sur les valeurs qui guident cette pratique. Il apparaît alors que ce sont les conditions les plus essentielles de notre être-au-monde, la naissance et la mort, qui risquent d’être altérées par l’agir technologique. Dans un troisième et quatrième moment, il faudra donc se pencher sur la manière dont la procréation médicale assistée et, plus fondamentalement encore, l’ingénierie future pourraient modifier le sens de la venue au monde des enfants. Outre la natalité, la mortalité est le second pôle qui détermine les conditions essentielles de la présence au monde de l’homme. C’est la raison pour laquelle, dans un dernier temps, l’éthique doit également se pencher sur la manière dont des techniques, apparues dans la seconde moitié du XXe siècle, peuvent bouleverser notre façon de mourir. After presenting evidence about categorization behavior, this paper argues for the following theses: 1) that there is a border between perception and cognition; 2) that the border is to be characterized by perception being modular (and cognition not being so); 3) that perception outputs conceptualized representations, so views that posit that the output of perception is solely non-conceptual are false; and 4) that perceptual content consists of basic-level categories and not richer contents.

Carroll Izard completed his dissertation in 1952, beginning a career spanning more than six decades that coincided with clinical psychology maturing as a profession, and the birth of clinical science and cognitive neuroscience. Izard’s focus on discrete emotions as evolved systems that organize information, prepare responses, and shape the development of personality and relationships persisted through his career, despite “emotions” often being overshadowed by psychodynamic, behavioral, or cognitive perspectives. His theoretical work anticipated and now integrates contemporary neuroscience and relational perspectives. (...) Exploration of discrete emotions has kept lines of inquiry open that enrich our understanding of psychopathology. Ramsey was a remarkably creative and subtle philosopher who in the briefest of academic careers made significant contributions to logic, philosophy of mathematics, philosophy of language and decision theory. His few published papers reveal him to be a figure or comparable importance to Russell, Carnap and Wittgenstein in the history of analytical philosophy. At some point in the future – perhaps within the next few decades – it will be possible for foetuses to develop completely outside the womb. Ectogenesis, as this technology is called, raises substantial issues for the abortion debate. One such issue is that it will become possible for a woman to have an abortion, in the sense of having the foetus removed from her body, but for the foetus to be kept alive. We argue that while there is a (...) right to an abortion, there are reasons to doubt that there is a right to the death of the foetus. Our strategy in this essay is to consider and reject three arguments in favour of this latter right. The first claims that women have a right not to be biological mothers, the second that women have a right to genetic privacy, and the third that a foetus is one's property. Furthermore, we argue that it follows from rejecting the third claim that genetic parents also lack a right to the destruction of cryopreserved embryos used for in vitro fertilization. The conclusion that a woman possesses no right to the death of the foetus builds upon the claims that other pro-choice advocates, such as Judith Jarvis Thomson, have made. (shrink)

Children and individuals with developmental disabilities compared to typical participants are disadvantaged not only by virtue of being vulnerable to risks inherent in research participation but also by the higher likelihood of exclusion from research altogether. Current regulatory and ethical guidelines although necessary for their protection do not sufficiently ensure fair distributive justice. Yet, in view of disproportionately higher burdens of co-occurring physical and mental disorders in individuals with DD, they are better positioned to benefit from research by equitable participation. (...) Greater elucidation of this ethical dilemma is called for by researchers, institutional review boards, and funding agencies to urgently redress the imbalance. This article discusses many of the regulatory principles to ensure better research participation of children and individuals with DD: human rights, validity, distributive justice, beneficence/nonmaleficence, and autonomy. The Moral Foundations of Trust seeks to explain why people place their faith in strangers, and why doing so matters. Trust is a moral value that does not depend upon personal experience or on interacting with people in civic groups or informal socializing. Instead, we learn to trust from our parents, and trust is stable over long periods of time. Trust depends on an optimistic world view: the world is a good place and we can make it better. Trusting people (...) are more likely to give through charity and volunteering. Trusting societies are more likely to redistribute resources from the rich to the poor. Trust has been in decline in the United States for over 30 years. The roots of this decline are traceable to declining optimism and increasing economic inequality, which Uslaner supports by aggregate time series in the United States and cross-sectional data across market economies. Joseph Keim Campbell has attempted to say “farewell” to a particular version of source incompatibilism, viz. direct source incompatibilism, arguing that direct source incompatibilism is committed to two theses that are in tension, thereby threatening the coherence of the position. He states that direct source incompatibilism is committed to the following claims: SI-F: there are genuine Frankfurt-style counterexamples. SI-D: there is a sound version of the Direct Argument. Campbell argues that both of these theses cannot be simultaneously held since a (...) sound version of the Direct Argument would undermine Frankfurt-style counterexamples, and vice versa. After laying out Campbell’s argument, I will first make some preliminary comments regarding actual direct source incompatibilists and their commitment to SI-F and SI-D. I then object to Campbell’s argument, arguing that one can accept both SI-F and SI-D, thereby vindicating direct source incompatibilism from the charge of incoherence. (shrink)

This paper examines a recent attempt at updating Anselm’s ontological argument by employing the notion of mediated and unmediated causal powers. After presenting the updated argument and the underlying metaphysical framework of causal powers that is utilized in the argument, I show that some of the key assumptions can be rejected. Once we closely examine some of the assumptions, it will also be evident that the updated version in some ways collapses back to Anselm’s original version and so is subject (...) to some of the same worries. Several philosophers have argued that property dualism and substance materialism are incompatible positions. Recently, Susan Schneider has provided a novel version of such an argument, claiming that the incompatibility will be evident once we examine some underlying metaphysical issues. She purports to show that on any account of substance and property-possession, substance materialism and property dualism turn out incompatible. In this paper, I argue that Schneider’s case for incompatibility between these two positions fails. After briefly laying out her case for (...) incompatibility, I present an account of substance—one that relies on a relational ontology—that makes the combination of substance materialism and property dualism unproblematic. Then I show that even under the theories of substance that Schneider considers—those that rely on a constituent ontology—there still is no incompatibility problem. (shrink)
