This article covers the critical edition, translation and analysis of the epistle on creed, al- Muʿtamad min al-muʿtaqad, written by the famous Hanafī jurist ʿAlāʾ al-dīn Abū Bakr b. Masʿūd al-Kāsānī. In his work, which can be evaluated in the literature of creed, al-Kāsānī explains the basics of Hanafī-Māturīdī belief in a brief and concise manner without any discussion. This study consists of three main parts: examination, critical edition and translation. In the examination part of the study, the life of (...) the author is handled with various aspects, and at the same time information is given about the relation of the work to the author, its position in the literature, its method and content as well as its manuscripts. Then, based on the six manuscript copies of the work which are available in various manuscript libraries, the critical edition and the translation of the work is given. It is aimed that this work, which is discussed in Turkish for the first time in an academic article, will contribute to the studies on Hanafī-Māturīdī creed literature to some extent. (shrink)

Feminist care ethics has become a prominent ethical theory that influenced theoretical and practical discussions in a variety of disciplines and institutions on a global scale. However, it has been criticized by transnational feminist scholars for operating with Western-centric assumptions and registers, especially by universalizing care as it is practiced in the Global North. It has also been criticized for prioritizing gender over other categories of intersectionality and hence for not being truly intersectional. Given the imperialist and colonial legacies embedded (...) into the unequal distribution of care work across the globe, a Western-centric approach may also carry the danger of paternalism. Hence, a critical approach to care ethics would require reckoning with these challenges. The aim of this article is first to unfold these discussions and the responses to them from care ethics scholars and then to present resources in Beauvoir’s existentialist ethics, specifically the tenet of treating the other as freedom, as productive tools for countering the Western-centric and paternalistic aspects of care practices. This article examines the metaphysical and moral foundations of Spinoza’s account of suicide. Spinoza’s treatment of suicide is brought into question by his conatus doctrine, which posits the striving to preserve one’s own being as the very essence of existence. Accordingly, suicide, or the termination of life, as the destruction of one’s own being, represents the exhaustion of this striving. The analysis of the causes that lead to self-destruction has sparked significant debate in Spinoza’s literature, raising the question of whether (...) suicide is a passive and irrational decision or a free and rational choice. This article, which engages with prominent scholars of this literature, notably Matson, Bennett, LeBuffe and Nadler, aims to alleviate this controversy by offering alternative readings and arguments. It concludes that free and rational suicide does not exist in Spinoza’s thought; instead, the “suicide of reason or rationality” forms the basis for bodily suicide. (shrink)

We develop a geometro-dynamical approach to the cosmological constant problem (CCP) by invoking a geometry induced by the energy-momentum tensor of vacuum, matter and radiation. The construction, which utilizes the dual role of the metric tensor that it structures both the spacetime manifold and energy-momentum tensor of the vacuum, gives rise to a framework in which the vacuum energy induced by matter and radiation, instead of gravitating, facilitates the generation of the gravitational constant. The non-vacuum sources comprising matter and radiation (...) gravitate normally. At the level of classical gravitation, the mechanism deadens the CCP yet quantum gravitational effects, if strong, can keep it existent. (shrink)

: The concept of synonymity, which is defined as the expression of the same meaning by different words, is discussed by modern linguists and also by Muslim scholars in relation to the Qur’ān. Among these Muslim scholars there are those who accept the existence of synonymousness in language as well as those who do not accept it. In this study, it was argued that the use of the words alleged to be synonyms in the Qur’ān is not correct in terms (...) of the meaning and coherence of the Qur’ān, and it is emphasized that there is only one close meaning relationship between these words in terms of meaning. This thought has been used to determine the meaning fields of the words imrae and the zawj used in the Qur’ān and used in place of each other in the commentaries. As a result, the domain of meaning of the word imrae is defined as: betrayal, infertility, bereavement/slavery, indifference of husband’s to his wife, and the inhabitants of hell due to the belief among the spouses and from laxity. The meaning domain of the word of zawj is determined as follows: Being spouse/marriage and faith together. For this reason, although both words. Summary: Synonymousness is defined as “two or more than two words expressing the same meaning”. Even though it is claimed that the words which are regarded as synonymous increase the power of expression in a given language, it appears that they also cause an ambiguity. Due to these two influences of synonymousness on language, its existence has been discussed by modern linguists as well as Muslim scholars. Among these Muslim scholars there are those who accept the existence of synonymousness in language as well as those who do not accept it. In this regard, they are divided into two different branches, namely “synonym finders” and “nuance chasers”. The synonym finders accept that there are synonymous words in Arabic language and, therefore, in the Qur’ān, while the nuance chasers embrace the idea that no word can be the same as another one, there are some nuances among them. The words used in the Qur’ān are not randomly selected. The aesthetic dimension of the Qur’ān is assigned by Almighty Allah as a necessity of its i’jāz. It is, therefore, obvious that the words assumed to be synonymous cannot be used in place of each other in the Qur’ān, and in case of being used in place of each other it would harm the harmony and the aesthetics of the Qur’ān. In the present study, through the context of the words imrae and zawj, we aim to call attention to see that synonymousness cannot exist in the Qur’ān. It is seen that the words imrae and zawj are used in place of each other in the commentaries on the Qur’ān and are translated into Turkish as “lady, spouse, wife, and woman”. As a matter of fact, the words that are treated in this way also in translations of the Qur’ān are used instead of each other both in Arabic and Turkish as “synonyms”. However, if the issue is approached with respect to Qur’ānic language, it must be stated that these words are not used in place of each other. For if the Qur’ān is carefully read, it will be seen that the contexts in which the aforementioned words are used differ from one another. We make firm that the word imrae expressing “woman” in Arabic is not used in the Qur’ān at random, but in various contexts. We can list the contexts in which this word is used in the Qur’ān as follows: The word imrae is used in the Qur’ān to characterize a woman in a context of betrayal caused by divergence of belief between the spouses. In this case, it is possible that the disbeliever is to be the husband as it is possible that it is to be the woman. In fact, the most typical example of a woman's disbelief, in the Qur’ān, is found in the case of the Prophet Noah’s wife and the Prophet Lūt’s wife. The case here is that there are two prophets’ wives who do not believe in their husbands’ prophethood, at least they exhibit an attitude of hypocrisy. On this point, the Surah al-Tahrīm 66/10 characterizes both the wife of Noah and the wife of Lūt with the word imrae. The difference in belief that the wives of the prophets have is not expressed with the terms like kufr, shirk, nifaq, etc., but with the term “betrayal”. The example in which the husband being unbeliever/polytheist and his wife being believer is found in the case of Pharaoh and his wife. The Qur’ān introduces Pharaoh as a disbeliever and his wife Asiya as a Muslim one who responds to Moses’ invitation positively. This woman is mentioned in the Qur’ān with the word imrae without mentioning its name. This expression takes place twice throughout the Qur’ān: one in the Surah al-Qasas 28/9 and the other in the Surah al-Tahrīm 66/11. In the case where the wife cheating on her husband - in consequence of unchastity - even though they are married, the Qur’ān does not use the word zawj for the woman, but the word imrae. The example of this case is the desire of the wife of the Egyptian Aziz for young Joseph who grows up in her home. It is noteworthy that the word describing her in the Surah Yusuf 12/30 is imrae because of her unfaithfulness to her husband and that the behavior of this woman is pictured as an unfaithful act in the Surah Yūsuf 12/52. Imrae is also used, in the Qur’ān, to describe the women who are childless. One of the examples of this case is presented in relation to the wife of Abraham in the Surah al-Dhāriyāt 51/28-29, and another one in relation to the wife of Zakariyya in the Surah Maryam 19/5. In fact, the wives of these two prophets were described with the word imrae in the relevant verses in consequence of their inability to have children due to their infertility. Another example of this case is the characterization of the woman who is both fatherless and childless with the word imrae in the Surah al-Nisā 4/12. The word imrae is also used for single and widow women. The situation of the single daughters of Shuʻayb and the situation of the mother of Mary who became widowed after the death of her husband before her daughter was born are the two examples for the case as the word imrae is used to express these women. In the Qur’ān, there are two other situations in which the word imrae is used for a woman. In the first of these situations the word imrae is used to express the woman who was confronted with her husband's carelessness, while in the second one it is used for Abu Lahab’s wife about whom foretold that she will be punished in the hell. Another word that we will deal with in our work is zawj/azwāj, which is used for the bound of marriage between every wife and husband. The word zawj is used for Adam’s wife, Eve, who was of exactly the same essence as Adam. It is also used in the Surah al-Rūm 30/22 where it is mentioned that God has put love and mercy between the spouses. In this verse, the spouses are expressed with the word azwāj. In the Qur’ān, the word zawj/azwāj is used both in the context of union of believers in belief and in the context of union of disbelievers in disbelief. In fact, in the Qur’ān, the word azwaj is used for the wives of the Prophet Muhammad and for the spouses of the believers, the dwellers of the Paradise, who share the same belief in a union. An opposite example takes place in the Surah al-Saffat 37/22 where the word azwāj is used for those who share the same mentality in polytheism and disbelief. As a result, the word zawj contains almost all the conditions that are necessary to be a spouse, whereas the word imrae is used in cases where the conditions that are necessary to be a zawj are not fully fulfilled. It can be stated that, with reference to the words imrae and zawj in particular, there is no any ground in the Qur’ān for synonymousness in general. For this reason, we believe that it is more appropriate to use the phrase "close in meaning" instead of “synonymous” for the words used by the Qur’ān. (shrink)

This paper deals with Richard Rorty’s notion of solidarity and its limits. I contend that although Rorty makes an earnest attempt to expand on what is to be understood from being part of a “we-group,” he still perceives solidarity as a phenomenon confined principally within national borders. After presenting the theoretical shortcomings of Rorty’s idea of “national pride” in the aforementioned context, I critically investigate the possibility of a broader sense of solidarity without disregarding Rorty’s mostly cogent criticism of traditional (...) philosophy. This study examined the ethical issues experienced by nurses working in a small group of elderly persons’ care settings in the UK, using a survey questionnaire previously used in other countries for examining the cultural aspects of ethical issues. However ‘culture’ relates not only to ethnicity but also the organizational culture in which care is delivered. Nurses working in elderly persons’ care settings described a range of issues faced when caring for elderly terminally ill people, which illustrated the different needs (...) of patients, relatives, professionals and society. These issues related to the unique needs of elderly people (such as dementia sufferers) and could have an impact on patients’ quality of death. (shrink)

The traditions about isrāʾīliyyāt that were seen almost in all the types of Islamic sciences appeared in the sources of tafsīr from early periods. These traditions that were generally used to explain the Qurʾān were seen problem and critisized by some exegetical specialists. Even though corresponding to a relative later period in the classical era, an approach was tried to put forward in view of the traditions about isrāʾīliyyāt. This methodological concern for isrāʾīliyyāt in classical period has increased and been (...) influential for many researchers from east and west to work on this issue in modern times. There has been reached to important results about the issues of the definition of isrāʾīliyyāt, the source of it, its spread in Islamic sciences, its aim of usage, the progress of these positive-negative attitudes against these traditions in historical process. But it is important to discuss some evaluations and analysis again that put forward in this process when different cases about the issue are taken into consideration. According to this, a series of problem, such as how the isrāʾīliyyāt can be defined in tafsīr, when the criticism of isrāʾīliyyāt started, whether Biqāʿī was the first exegete who made reference to Bible or not will be discussed considering relevant resources in this article.Summary: Since the early periods, isrā’īliyyāt narratives were used as a source of information in tafsīrs. These narratives, which are transmitted in various tafsīrs of the Qur’ān, one of the main sources of Islamic religion, have also taken the methodological interests of some exegete since the early periods. This interest continued in the modern period, and both Western and Eastern researchers made research on isrā’īliyyāt. Some of the findings, analyses, and claims available in researches on this subject will be reexamined in this article. The first of these is the problem of the definition of isrā’īliyyāt. In contemporary research, inclusive definitions are made for isrā’īliyyāt, seen in all sources. These definitions do not allow for a refined description of isrā’īliyyāt which is handled in terms of different intentions in the sources of each different field and which varies in terms of the issues it covers, leading to the underestimation of some of its aspects in relevant fields. In the definitions, it is stated that isrā’īliyyāt is mostly learned from the Ahl al-Kitāb, (the People of the Book) it became widespread along with Islām and it included narratives about caliphs, dynasties, and Mahdī, as well. Another issue is to be emphasized that they are fictive or mythological. In classical tafsīrs, isrā’īliyyāt is observed to be related mainly with the history of the Ahl al-Kitāb or with the subjects they know about. In the modern era, the narratives about the ancestors of the Arabs have been identified as isrā’īliyyāt. If some of the isrā’īliyyāt narratives are related to the history of Arabs, then their resource should be the historical-cultural memory of Arabs. However, as almost all Qur’ānic stories were somewhat known before the revelation period and relations with the Ahl al-Kitāb dated back to times long before the Islamic period, the claim that these narratives became widespread along with Islām should be revised. It is also problematic to emphasize the legendary nature of some of the isrā’īliyyāt and to make that as a reason to reject all. Such emphasis also leads to the underestimation of the functions of narratives in tafsīrs. In isrā’īliyyāt, tafsīr was used for i) interpreting the ambiguous words in the stories, ii) to bring evidence to the Ahl al-Kitāb, and ii) tarhīb-targhīb (encouragement-warning). These narratives can be used as a source in tafsīr unless they are explicitly falsified by the data of fields such as history, history of religions and archaeology as well as the Qur’ān and the true Sunnah. The first criticisms of isrā’īliyyāt are claimed to belong to exegete like Ibn al-‘Arabī (d. 543/148) or Ibn ‘Aṭīyah (d. 541/1147). However, criticism of isrā’īliyyāt is also observed in the tafsīrs of earlier exegete, such as al-Māturīdī (d. 333/944), al-Māwardī (d. 450/1058) or al-Ṭūsī (d. 460/1067). They do not necessarily have to use the term isrā’īliyyāt explicitly in their criticism like the later ones. If the narratives they criticize and the reasons for their criticism are the same as those of the later exegete, it will be necessary to date the criticism of isrā’īliyyāt back to the 4th Century of the Hegira. The understanding that "the expression in the story is sufficient, it is unnecessary to deal with the ambiguities; instead, it is necessary to deal with the lesson and wisdom in the story" is one of the criteria that Muḥammad ‘Abduh (d. 1905), who is deemed to be the pioneer of the strict criticism of isrā’īliyyāt in the modern period, took as basis in this criticism, is valid for the exegete of the classical period, as well. Although exegete, such as al-Ṭabarī (d. 310/923), al-Māturīdī, al-Rāzī (d. 606/1210), and Abū Ḥayyān (d. 745/1344) who had this understanding, gave place to isrā’īliyyāt, these people recognized that "these narratives were not final, binding or necessary”, indeed. The understanding that such expression in the story is sufficient, which is one of the reasons for such awareness in the classical period, seems to have turned into a strict rejection in the modern period. Another issue is the claim that Biqā‘ī (d. 885/1480) was the first exegete to systematically benefit from the Bible in tafsīr in the classical period. However, al-Daylamī (d. 593/1197) before Biqā‘ī, is also observed to have used the Old Testament systematically in tafsīr. He cited the Tanakh in his period in two ways. He either directly quoted from the translation of Tanakh or the Hebrew text written in Arabic letters. Another exegete who used the Tanakh as a source in his tafsīr was al-Ṣafadī (d. 696/1296). He enriched his tafsīr with systematic quotations from the Tanakh. Therefore, the use of the Bible as a source of interpretation in the classical period should not be started with Biqā‘ī. The reason why the pioneer exegete of the classical period did not directly use the Bible is claimed to be the fact that they falsified it and deemed the isrā’īliyyāt narrated from the predecessors to be more reliable. However, it is known that a significant portion of the isrā’īliyyāt, which was orally transferred from the predecessors, is based on written sources, particularly including the apocryphal texts. So just like the Bible, isrā’īliyyāt, which was orally transferred from the predecessors, is problematic in terms of authenticity. This allows us to argue that classical exegete have an inconsistent attitude, indeed. On the other hand, when we take into account the fact that classical exegetes criticize these narratives from time to time and believe that they are not final or binding, the problem of potential inconsistency disappears. Accordingly, they did not deem chain transmission of these narratives from the predecessors by reliable transmitters to be a sufficient reason for their acceptance and adoption for good and all. The prospect of a transnational feminist coalition is one of the most challenging questions that feminism faces today. The author analyzes Beauvoir’s involvement with the Algerian decolonization movement and her own self-critique as instructive tools for forming better ways for feminists to engage transnationally. Beauvoir’s existentialist ethics, political writings, and activism continue to offer models for developing an anticolonial and anti-imperialist transnational feminist ethics and are an underexplored resource in transnational feminist scholarship.

In the history of İslāmic thought, Māturīdī is a famous scholar both in the field of kalām and tafsir. Being approved by Māturīdī, the distinction of tafsir and ta’wīl, which makes possible to take the comments made about the verses into sistematic framework, is quite important. There is an important information both about content of the distinction approved by Māturīdī and the main reasons that necessiated this distinction in the introduction of Samarqandī’s Sharh at Ta’wīlāt. From this information, it is (...) understood that the distinction of tafsir and ta’wīl had dated back to older time than Māturīdī and previous scholars dealed with the problem that necessiated this distinction and Māturīdī inherited this distinction from his predecessors. Information in the Sharh at Ta’wīlāt reveals that according to Māturīdī the companions had made interpretation (ta’wīl) in addition to tafsir and the explanations made by certain evidences is tafsir too. Therefore this information gives us the opportunity flexing the acceptance of the idea “tafsir, is dedicated to the companions, ta'wīl is dedicated to fuqaha (jurists)” and asserting that companions and scholars made both tafsir and ta’wīl. In this paper, we will research whether the distinction tafsir and ta’wīl regarded by Māturīdī completely belonged to his or not and content of the distinction and its reasons. We will also analyze this distinction according to examples in the Ta’wîlāt. Summary: An important distinction is made between the concepts of tafsir and ta’wīl in the short preface of Māturīdī's tafsir, and this distinction is particularly prominent in contemporary tafsir studies. Because from the point of view of the value they carry, the explanations for these differences and concepts express the legitimacy of the following mufassirūn (writers of a commentary on the Qur’an) to be able to perform tafsir, as well as the value of the explanations found in tafsir literature in terms of certainty. In Ta'wīlāt, tafsir is described as the precise determination of what is intended. Determination of what is exactly intended in verse/wording is bound to certainly know the conditions under which it was revealed. Because they are the first to be addressed directly and they witnessed the context, the tafsir is only for the companions (ṣaḥābah pl. aṣḥāb). On the other hand, ta’wīl is not a definite determination of what is intended, but rather it is explained as putting the possibilities forward. In this case, ta’wīl is dedicated to the scholars after the companions. When we look at the other tafsir sources that include his views, it can be understood that this brief information in the preface of the tafsir which survived to our day is partially incomplete. Samarqandī's Sharhu’t-ta'wīlāt is the most important of these sources. According to the information here, Māturīdī states that some scholars distinguish tafsir and ta’wīl from each other. In these distinctions, tafsir is either described in relation to a definitive statement or in relation to being familiar with the conditions of revelation, while ta’wīl is described as extracting meanings from the verses and making possible meanings without claiming certainty. These explanations show that the distinction between tafsir and ta’wīl in Ta'wīlāt's preface was mainly based on the period before Māturīdī. These statements, which Māturīdī transmitted from some scholars in the beginning of Sharhu’t-ta'wīlāt, were then transmitted by Omar al-Nasafī, Mahāyimī and Molla Husrev. In some sources, it was also transmitted that similar explanations were made by scholars such as an-Nadr b. Shumayl, al-Hussein b. Fadl al-Bacelī and Ibn Durayd before Māturīdī.Some explanations of Māturīdī in Ta'wīlāt enables the theory of tafsir-ta’wīl to be understood at a wider level. When the examples are examined, it is observed that Māturīdī exhibited two types of attitude against the tafsir of the companions. He states that one of these is that if the transmission is true, what is intended is exactly what is stated in the narrated. The second is that he sometimes does not accept these explanations and suggests additional opinions. The reason he refuses is that sometimes he does not find the transmission reliable, and sometimes he thinks that companions performed ta'wīl. If this is the case, the dedication of ta’wīl to those coming later should not be absolutized. Because the companions can perform both tafsir and ta’wīl. The examples in Ta'wīlāt clearly reveal what areas tafsir, which is defined as a definite statement, covers. According to this, first, tafsir is related to the field of “invisible” about the past and the future. Secondly, its meaning and practice is only about the information of the “statement” about the issues that can be revealed by the Prophet (pbuh). In the third aspect, it is related to “revelation” information reporting the context in which the verses descended. In the beginning of Sharhu’t-ta'wīlāt, Māturīdī says that the explanations made based on the definitive evidences such as mutawātir (repetition; narration reported by large number reporters) and ijmā (consensus) also fall under the category of tafsir. However, it is also necessary to add intellectual evidence to these evidences. Because intellectual evidence is also important in the epistemology of Māturīdī. In fact, the truthfulness of nass (text) is primarily based on intellectual evidence. First, the issues of theology are proven by certain intellectual evidence, and then, on the basis of this, the meanings expressed by the nass acquire the value of certainty and truthfulness. With the definitive acceptance of reason in theology, what some nass express confirm each other and are used as evidence in the process of interpretation. Therefore, since some of the intellectual evidence, ijmā and mutawātir news provide definitive information, explanations based on them are also seen as tafsir. Considering the fact that the above-mentioned evidence was also used by those coming after the companions, it can be concluded that tafsir can be performed by not only the companions but also those coming after them. In this case, it should be accepted that tafsir is not performed only by the companions, and that the succeeding mufassirūn can also perform tafsir as well as ta’wīl. When we look at the examples based on these evidence, there are two different situations in Ta'wīlāt. The first is that Māturīdī sometimes has views on evidence based on mutawātir and ijmā and sometimes suggests different opinions from the assumptions that he said there was ijmā in particular. Because these evidences are certain, it is understandable that he remains bound to them. However, as a possible reason for his opposition to ijmā, it can be said that he thinks only the following generations enter the scope of ijmā. Because, according to Samarqandī, Māturīdī's objection to such information does not seem possible, since ijmā of the companions in a matter is accepted. Although he sometimes said that there was ijmā, the reason why no such ijmā was mentioned in other tafsir sources and sometimes, it may be considered that he did not respect other views in the face of ijmā as a reason for including different views or it may be thought that he was unaware of the different views that were transmitted. The second remarkable situation is that according to Māturīdī, intellectual evidence, in particular, can reveal only the “knowledge of existence” of the issues related to theology. Māturīdī thinks that their nature cannot be certainly known, and that the explanations made regarding their nature are only ta’wīl. For this reason, he firmly rejects the interpretation of the khabarī attributes about Allah in accordance with the idea of tashbīh and tajsīm (anthropomorphism). (shrink)

Tefsire dair meselelerin tartışılıp incelendiği kaynaklar arasında Beyzâvî’nin Envârü’t-tenzîl adlı tefsirinin mukaddimesi önemli rol oynamıştır. Zira bu tefsir üzerine yazılan şerh-hâşiyeler onun sonraki literatüre etkisini ortaya koymaktadır. Beyzâvî tefsir mukaddimesinde tefsiri dini ilimlerin en yücesi olarak sunmakta, akabinde bir taraftan şer‘î kaidelerin esasını oluşturduğu için ilimlerin aslı (...) kabul etmekte ve diğer taraftan tefsir yapabilmek için de dini ve edebi ilimlerde mahir olmayı şart koşmaktadır. Şerh ve hâşiyelerde bu yargılara bağlı olarak tefsirin nasıl üstün ilim olduğu, özel olarak da onun kelam ve hadis ilmine karşı üstünlüğü sorunu tartışılmıştır. Bunlara ilave olarak tefsirin dini ilimlerin temelini oluşturduğu için bu ilimlerden önce gelmesi ile ancak onlardan yardım alarak tefsir yapılabileceği kabulünün tefsiri o ilimlerden sonraya yerleştirmesi problemi ele alınmıştır. This study examines the compilation process and source value of The Mufaddaliyyat, one of the most important anthologies of ancient Arabic poetry. The Mufaddaliyyat, compiled by Mufaddal al-Dabbī (d. 178/794), is known as the second major poetry anthology created after Mu‘allaqāt. Some accounts state that Mufaddal al-Dabbī initially selected 80 odes for Caliph Mahdi-Billah (d. 169/785) for educational purposes, which later increased to 128 odes. Other accounts suggest that Ibrahim b. Abdullah (d. 145/763) played a significant role in the anthology's compilation and that the odes he selected were used by Mufaddal al-Dabbī. These differences reflect the complexity of the compilation process and various perspectives. This research aims to provide a comprehensive understanding of The Mufaddaliyyat, allowing for a broader perspective on its place in Arabic literature. Thus, the study is expected to contribute to the wider recognition and understanding of The Mufaddaliyyat and serve as a guide for future studies on the subject.In conclusion, The Mufaddaliyyat, as one of the significant poetry anthologies of classical Arabic literature, holds great importance in Islamic literature. Compiled after Mu‘allaqāt, The Mufaddaliyyat consists of poems personally selected by its compiler and was prepared using a method previously untried in Arabic literature. In this context, while Mu‘allaqāt can be considered the first poetry anthology in classical Arabic literature, the anthology tradition can be said to have started with The Mufaddaliyyat. There are various disputes regarding whether all or only a part of the odes in The Mufaddaliyyat were selected by Mufaddal al-Dabbī. However, considering the preface of the Enbari commentary, regarded as the most reliable account of the anthology, it is understood that the views and accounts indicating Mufaddal al-Dabbī as the compiler are more accurate. Regardless of the compiler, the use of the verses in The Mufaddaliyyat for citation in many significant works of Islamic literature demonstrates the anthology's high source value and reliability. ‘Abdallāh al-Baṭṭāl is an important commander who undertook important duties in the Islamic conquests of the Umayyads (41-132/661-750). It is understood that he achieved remarkable success in these missions against the Byzantine (Eastern Roman) Empire, and this success led to him being mentioned as a hero in the chronicles. Aside from his historical personality, the fact that he is narrated based on the heroic tale is a critical component that strengthens the significance of the research subject. This article analyzes the (...) process by which the historical existence of 'Abdullāh al-Battāl, who planned an expedition to Anatolia (Bilād al-Rūm), was transformed into a heroic story and the basic elements that supported it. In this perspective, the focus is on Baṭṭāl’s life, which is the subject of historical information, and then on how he appears in the texts by transforming into myth and narrative. This study, which was carried out within the framework of the first period of Islamic history sources, Ibn Aʿt̲h̲am’s (d. 320/932) “Kitāb al-futūḥ” and Ibn ‘Asākir’s (d. 571/1176) “Tarīkh madīnat Dimashq” works are discussed through the narrative elements. It is worth noting that both authors presented Baṭṭāl as a hero outside of his historical personality, allowing for the construction of a new history. The political context of the time, sectarian identities, and the deciding roles of the relationship they built with authority in the authors' portrayals of Baṭṭāl will be addressed in this article. Examining the process of transforming a historical personality into a myth by removing the aforementioned actuality is significant in terms of the abilities of the chronicler authors in the writings they made during their lives. In this framework, the article focuses on Battal’s life, campaigns, and participation in jihad activities, followed by his transition into a story by becoming a hero. (shrink)

The aim of this essay is to give voice to the distinct types of feminist consciousnesses in dominantly Muslim societies, which have been mostly ignored or marginalized by Western and Western-influenced feminisms. I analyze Islamic and secular feminisms in Turkey (a secular regime) and in Iran (an Islamic regime) and show the shortcomings and patriarchal elements in both movements. I also show the authenticity and necessity of both movements, and emphasize their contributions to the feminist ideal of pluralism. As in classical Latin philosophical and theological texts, Spinoza did not make any semantic distinction between the concepts of conscientia and conscius, and used one interchangeably. But the concept of conscientia is used as an “inner voice” or “conscience” meaning “moral sensitivity” or “moral awareness” and expresses both rational and irrational processes in traditioanl philosophy. On the other hand, the concept of conscius is used in the sense of “consciousness” and expresses a mental or psychological reflexive activity based on rational (...) processes in the same tradition. Based on Spinoza's use of the two concepts in the same sense, this study claims that “moral sensitivity” is formed as a result of reflexive thinking, which is a mental action. Where consciousness is understood as a reflexive activity based on the relationship between ideas, it is argued that “moral awareness” occurs in the mind as an idea formed as a result of the relationship between ideas. In the study, it is determined that Spinoza developed a kind of “moral consciousness” theory based on the awareness in question, rather than a “conscience theory”. The main focus of the study is that the idea of “good” and “evil”, which are the basic concepts in Spinoza’s ethics, arise from the idea of “joy” and “sadness” that occur as emotions in the mind. Here, “joy” or “sadness” is considered as the primary ideas that occur in the mind as a result of the affection of the body, and “good” or “bad” as secondary ideas formed by the mind as a result of contemplation on these primary ideas. In the article, the theory of “moral consciousness” is based on the “ideas of ideas”, which are the secondary ideas in question. There are two widely accepted definitions of ilm al-tafsīr in the hāshiyahs on Anwār al-Tanzīl. The most accepted ones are as follows: Tafsīr is the science that investigates the states of the word of Allah in terms of signifying the will of Allah. This definition mainly belongs to al-Taftāzānī in his hāshiyah on al-Kashshāf. Despite the objections directed to it, the definition was accepted in the later phases and there were not any detailed discussions on it. From this point of (...) view, it can be concluded that there is a common tafsīr definition in Anwār al-Tanzīl hāshiyahs due to the fact that the majority concurred with this definition. The prevalence of this definition is also out of the question for al-Kashshāf hāshiyahs. Its prevalence in the following literature may be attributed to its implementation in accordance with the definition requirements. Because in the definitions made based on the subject, the subject is regarded as genus, and how this subject is addressed is also considered as a difference (fasl). Accordingly, in the above definition, the subject of the tafsīr is explained as the states of Kalam, and the direction in which it is addressed is expressed in terms of the will of Allah. Thus, the subject of tafsīr and its research direction were explained and its difference from other sciences researching the Qur’ān was also stated. According to the second most widespread definition in the hāshiyahs, tafsīr is a science in which the meanings of the Kalam of Allah are known in terms of human capacity/capability. This definition is more or less a description (rasm) compared to the previous one. Hence, it is a looser definition. For this reason, the definition does not allow tafsīr to be separated from other sciences. Because, the meanings of words in the Qur’ān, language sciences and religious sciences are also explored. However, in the other definition, the difference of tafsīr was taken into consideration by including the directional record and the will/intent expression more quickly. On the other hand, the second definition has a limitation of being based on human capacity/capability that reveals some features of the tafsīr more clearly. This limitation expresses that the research in tafsīr is based on suppositional data in one way and continuity in another. Both definitions in the hāshiyahs show that there are clear and common definitions of ilm al-tafsīr between the hijri 9th and 12th centuries. It is stated that with a few exceptions, in almost all of the hāshiyahs, the ilm al-tafsīr is divided into two parts as tafsīr and ta’wīl. The tafsīr here is based on narrative, and ta’wīl is based on reason. Explanation of both of them in this way can be seen in al-Kashshāf. Accordingly, it is understood that both concepts become evident in al-Kashshāf and Anwār al-Tanzīl hāshiyahs. However, when we look at some tafsīr introductions, and literature of ulūm al-Qur’ān, it is observed that vastly different explanations have been made about them. This gives the impression that there is no clear and widespread acceptance of them. However, by explaining as mentioned, their meaning becomes clear in the next literature. Because this explanation about them is essentially a statement that al-Māturīdī conveyed from his predecessors. Accordingly, an explanation about both concepts that was conveyed from the early period has gained acceptance and became widespread especially in the sharhs-hāshiyahs for the following process. Since al-Baydāwī associates both concepts with muhkam and mutashābih, the commentators also explained this relationship. They contain the definitions of the muhkam and mutashābih, which al-Baydāwī made in accordance with Shāfi‘ī method. Accordingly, muhkam are the ones that is clear in terms of what is meant, and do not need further explanation. Examples of muhkam are verses about shari‘a 'orders, inheritance distribution, transactions, and marriage issues. The provisions on these issues should be based on narrative, not reason. Thus, the explanation of muhkam becomes tafsīr. The mutashābih is interpreted since the meaning is not clear. In this case, their interpretation is also ta’wīl. The religious sciences that tafsīr benefits from are explained as being hadith, fiqh, theology, mysticism, and usūl al-fiqh, and this case expresses a general opinion. Literary sciences required for tafsīr are also described as glossary, derivation, morphology, grammar, bayān, ma‘ānī, and badī‘. However, there are two opinions about the knowledge of disciplines such as prosody, rhyme, qard al-shi‘r, khat, and inshā. According to one opinion, since these sciences are not related to the Qur’ān, it is not necessary to know them in order to interpret them. According to the other one, for a competent interpretation activity, these sciences must be known, and their data are thought to contribute to tafsīr. (shrink)

Sonuçta ihtilâflar tenevvu ʿ /zahir î ve tezat/hakik î ihtil â f ş eklinde iki k ı sımda incelenmiştir. İhtilâflar (...) ve mezkûr kavramlar temelde lafızların çok anlamlılığı veya anlamların birbiriyle çelişikliği üzerinden ele alınmaktadır. Bu durum hangi ihtilâfın tezat/hakikî, hangisinin de tenevvu ʿ /zahir î oldu ğ unu tespitte belirsizliklere neden olmaktad ı r. Bu nedenle, konuyu inceleyenler nazar ı nda sah â be tefsirinde ö zellikle tezat/hakikî ihtilâfın bulunup bulunmadığı da farklılaşmaktadır. Biz ihtilâf olgusunun çok anlamlılık veya anlamların birbiriyle çelişmesi üzerinden değil, Allah’ın muradı, muhatabın algılayışı, zaman ve mekan birliği, uygulamadaki sonuçların tutarlılığı gibi kriterlere göre değerlendirilmesi gerektiğini düşünmekteyiz. Böyle bakıldığında sahâbe tefsirinde hakikî ihtilâflar görülür. Çünkü onlar nüzûle bizzat şahit olsalar da bazı sebepler, âyetlerin tefsirinde onları da ihtilâf etmeye sevk etmiştir. (shrink)

A reflexão que apresento em homenagem ao historiador das Ideias, o filósofo José Esteves Pereira, procura relevar, pela via hermenêutica do seu pensamento epistémico desenvolvido desde os primeiros escritos na década de 1980 até à reflexão de 2016, os núcleos eidéticos que marcam o modo de fazer da História das ideias. Seguindo o seu discurso, procurei mostrar como nele a epistemologia se enquadra no domínio da History of Ideas, ultrapassando-a, nomeadamente no âmbito da multi e da transdisciplinaridade, bem como ao (...) nível da abrangência das linhas de investigação. A sua epistemologia constituiu a pedra de toque da “escola” que na NOVA FCSH iniciou o percurso neste modo de fazer história, permitindo a abertura a formações diversas e complementares do saber filosófico, matriz da ideia que o historiador pesquisa enquanto factum incarnado na temporalidade histórica. Context: Non-dualistic thinking is an alternative to realism and constructivism. Problem: In the absence of a distinct definition of the term “description,” the question comes up of what exactly can be included in non-dualistic descriptions, and in how far the definition of this term affects the relation between theory and empirical practice. Furthermore, this paper is concerned with the question of whether non-dualism and dualism differ in their implications. Method: I provide a wider semantic framework for the term “description” by (...) means of George Spencer Brown’s terminology in his calculus of indications as laid out in Laws of Form. The connection of descriptions and distinctions enables descriptions to comprise reflections and language as well as empirical observations. Results: Non-dualism can be thought of in different ways but still has essential elements in common with dualism. Implications: Non-dualism, as well as dualism, is an argumentation technique suitable for specific situations, but without significant differences in implications. (shrink)

The paper’s main goal is to compare laws banning hate speech with counterspeech as an effective method of curtailing hate speech. In the first part, the paper discussed three normative justifications for hate speech bans. Firstly, the line of argument developed by critical race theorists that assumes that hate speech leads to the direct harm and violation of individuals’ rights. Secondly, paper examines the Weimar model that rests on the assumption that hate speech can lead to indirect harm to members (...) of vulnerable minorities by creating a toxic environment, which opens the door to discrimination and even violence. Thirdly, the justification which is derived from the idea that such forms of extreme public speech violate the basic values and principles – such as inclusiveness, equality and mutual respect - on which constitutional democracies are built. This approach extends its argument from general values to the status of citizens by arguing that hate speech violates the equal standing of citizens by attempting to exclude certain members of society from the process of democratic deliberation based on their ascriptive characteristics. The second part of the paper looks at counterspeech as an efficient approach to limit harms that arise from hate speech. The author argues that legal bans should be reserved only for the most extreme forms of hateful rhetoric, while counterspeech is a valid option for tackling all other forms of hate speech. (shrink)
