Entre o niilismo e a legitimidade do espaço simbólico: diálogo com Schmitt, Heidegger e Blumenberg (Between nihilism and the legitimacy of symbolic space: dialogue with Schmitt, Heidegger and Blumenberg). DOI: 10.5752/P.2175-5841.2014v12n33p183.

The Logical Problem of Language Acquisition.Carl Lee Baker & John J. McCarthy - 1981 - MIT Press (MA).
This collection of articles and associated discussion papers focuses on a problem that has attracted increasing attention from linguists and psychologists throughout the world during the past several years. Reduced to essentials, the problem is that of discovering the character of the mental capacities that make it possible for human beings to attain knowledge of their language on the basis of fragmentary and haphazard early linguistic experience. A fundamental assumption running through all of these contributions is that people possess strong (...)

The Sky is the Limit: Evaluating Business Models from an Integral and Non-Reductionist View of Reality.Guilherme Coelho da Rocha de Castro & Humberto Elias Garcia Lopes - 2024 - Philosophy of Management 23 (1):125-151.
This paper presents an ontological perspective that enables evaluating the effectiveness of business models from an integrative worldview. Different groups’ fragmented and reductionist views on this topic create a dichotomy that makes it difficult to compare and analyze them in practice. Such groups use different values for some components, which may result in neglecting others and their interrelationship. This study discusses a functional characteristic of business models that academia still needs to address. It explores new frontiers in the field, such (...)

    Teaching Otherwise.Carl Anders Säfström - 2003 - Studies in Philosophy and Education 22 (1):19-29.
In this paper I discuss some conditions forunderstanding teaching as an act ofresponsibility towards an other, rather than asan instrumental act identified throughepistemology. I first put the latter intocontext through a critical reading of teachingas it is inscribed in humanistic discourses oneducation. Within these discourses, I explorehow students are treated as objects ofknowledge that reinforce the teacher's ego. Icontend that the taking up of this positionmakes not only an ethical relation to thestudent impossible, but also disqualifies anytype of meaningful social (...)

Aion: Researches Into the Phenomenology of the Self.Carl Gustav Jung - 1956 - Routledge.
_Aion_ is one of a number of major works that Jung wrote during his seventies that were concerned with the relations between psychology, alchemy and religion. He is particularly concerned in this volume with the rise of Christianity and with the figure of Christ. He explores how Christianity came about when it did, the importance of the figure of Christ and the identification of the figure of Christ with the archetype of the Self. A matter of special importance to Jung (...)

Why is democracy desirable? Neo-Aristotelian, critical realist, and psychodynamic approaches.Carl Auerbach - 2020 - Journal of Critical Realism 19 (4):362-379.
This paper addresses the question of why democracy is desirable in terms of a relational theory of democracy. The theory draws on concepts from Aristotelian, critical realist, and psychoanalytic theory. From Aristotle it takes the concepts of human flourishing and human virtues; from critical realism it takes the concepts of relational subjects and relational goods; from psychoanalysis it takes the concept of mutuality. The relational theory argues that democracy, particularly deliberative democracy, is desirable because it requires and facilitates the development (...)

(1 other version)The Immigrant Has No Proper Name: The disease of consensual democracy within the myth of schooling.Carl Anders Säfström - 2010 - Educational Philosophy and Theory 42 (5-6):606-617.
In this article I discuss the role of the immigrant in Swedish society and especially how such a role is construed through what I call the myth of schooling, that is, the normalization of an arbitrary distribution of wealth and power. I relate this myth to the idea of consensual democracy as it is expressed through an implicit idea of what it means to be Swedish. I not only critique the processes through which immigrants are discriminated against or excluded from (...)

A Sociohistorical Critique Of Naturalistic Theories Of Color Perception.Carl Ratner - 1989 - Journal of Mind and Behavior 10 (4):361-372.
Naturalistic experiments of color perception are critically evaluated. The review concludes that they fail to confirm a natural determination of color perception. Rather than demonstrating universal sensitivity to focal colors, the experiments actually yielded enormous cultural variation in response. This variation is interpreted as supporting a sociohistorical psychological explanation of color perception.

    The Theory-Ladenness of Observation.Carl R. Kordig - 1971 - Review of Metaphysics 24 (3):448 - 484.
Feyerabend claims that what is perceived depends upon what is believed ; and he maintains that among really efficient alternative theories "each theory will possess its own experience, and there will be no overlap between these experiences". According to Feyerabend "scientific theories are ways of looking at the world; and their adoption affects our general beliefs and expectations, and thereby also our experiences...". Toulmin, Hanson, and Kuhn concur with this view. Toulmin claims that men who accept different "ideals" and "paradigms" (...)

  18. Mutual Fund Incubation and the Role of the Securities and Exchange Commission.Carl Ackermann & Tim Loughran - 2006 - Journal of Business Ethics 70 (1):33-37.
A mutual fund family incubates a fund when it creates a privately subsidized fund not available to the general investing public. It destroys unsuccessful incubator funds. The few successful funds will report higher incubation returns than the market return in advertisements intended to attract money from individual investors. This practice is currently allowed by the SEC. The evidence is that incubation returns are not a good predictor of subsequent fund performance and likely serve to mislead unsuspecting investors.

The “problem of voluntary actions”, traditionally known asthe “problem of substantial union”, is one of the most controversialissues in the Cartesian doctrine. It is about seeking to understand howthe soul, being just an immaterial substance, whose nature consists onlyin thinking, could determine the animal spirits to carry out voluntary actions. The modus operandi, from which Descartes intended to explain howthe thinking substance would determine the movements of the pinealgland, is what greatly botheredElisabeth of Bohemia. Are we living the end of democracy? A defence of the ‘free’ time of the university and school in an era of authoritarian capitalism.Carl Anders Säfström - 2020 - Conjectura: Filosofia E Educação 25:1-16.
In this article I address education beyond individualism, elitism and instrumentalism and instead understand education as central for a democratic way of life. I discuss the role of education in the making of democratic forms of life in the university, in the school as well as in other contexts outside institutions. I argue for the importance of defending the “free time” of the university and school against a “time of production” as a defining characteristic of university and school. I will (...)

    Middle Comedy and the "Satyric" Style.Carl A. Shaw - 2010 - American Journal of Philology 131 (1):1-22.
Although "Middle Comedy" may best serve as a chronological label, the remains of pre-Menandrian, fourth-century comic productions suggest that certain characteristics were more dominant at this time than in earlier or later periods of Greek comedy. The possible sources for these characteristics are wide-ranging, but available evidence indicates that fifth-century satyr drama was one of the most important. Not only do fragments, titles, and plots reveal a significant generic relationship, but Aristotle even seems to link their comic mode. Fifth-century satyr (...)

    Commentary on "Chris Walker's Interpretation of Karl Jaspers' Phenomenology".Carl E. Fulwiler & Marshal F. Folstein - 1995 - Philosophy, Psychiatry, and Psychology 2 (4):345-346.
What value is this scholarly debate about the origins of Jaspers' phenomenology to psychiatric clinicians? For one thing, it might help kindle enough interest among scholars and clinicians in Jaspers' General Psychopathology to warrant its reprinting. This would expand the psychiatrist's appreciation of the relevance of philosophy to medical thinking and patient care. In the GP, Jaspers quotes Kant's opinion that "the psychiatrist's competence is really commensurate with how far his education and knowledge would qualify him to belong to the (...)
